We do - we've got 2x HP Dl165 G7s for the 'network' and then a single (soon to be a second) HP DL385 G7 for the Kaviza kit - all local storage no SAN. As far as our discussions the general idea is that it would work and potentialy work very well (aparently they do on site demos with a SSD powered laptop) but the only thing is - SSDs are still (in the grand scheme) very new and the long term effects of using them in such a manner are unkown. So for all we know in 3 years time the SSDs you bought could have fried themselves because of excessive wear.

Just about to suggest the same - we've got Kaviza kit here and works great with our 15k local storage SAS drives - the UK guy for it is also very intrested in using SSDs for VDI and we've talked about it a few times.

Hi all, I've finaly got round to getting a propper web based help desk in place - after much review our final decision went to GLPI (so please don't try to convice me over to something else). I've got AD setup and its working fine with it all however I can't seem to configure it with our Live@Edu email and I belive this is due to our web proxy getting in the way (however do correct me if theres something else at foot!). I've configured the email settings as you see below (password omitted) and I also found something about proxys in the 'General setup' page and put in the correct details but still the same 'connection failed' message. Does any one have any clues? James

Hi all, We have 23 copies of 'Information Systems for you - 3rd edition' for free to any school that is willing to collect them (Abingdon Oxfordshire). The ISBN is - 0-7487-6367-8 If no one is intrested by 17th June then we wont have them anymore! James

I'd say both Exchange and your MIS (assuming its SIMS) are very database intensive applications with lots of I/O - as such you might want to make sure you get some decent speed (10-15k SAS drives) for that server. Our file server is a virtual as well and sits accross 4x2Tb 7.2k SAS drives - it ticks along happily for a school of 300 machines, 100 staff and 900 students so I shouldn't imagine you will run into any problems (one thing that does help is the 1Gb of flash cache sitting behind it though).

Personaly I would shrink the partition size of your VM (while inside the VM its self) and then do a disk to VHD (aka physical to virtual) conversion using System Centre Virtual Machine manager or any other tool.

This Wednesday (1/06/11) we will be hosting our first mini seminar on our particular brand of virtual desktop tech and I can’t wait! Being only 21 and without ever even touching a university (well besides a visit to oxford once for a drink with people) I think it’s great how well things can go with enough drive and energy as well as working for a great IT team leader. So the main message is do wish me luck (I’m hoping it will spell out well for the future of my school) but also for all those who think they are too young or not qualified enough to work in IT that your not! Take the bull by the horns and do the best you can.

I could well be wrong but I thought iSCSI works in a way that it presents a raw disk to the OS that using it and that in disk management you have to then select GPT or MBR? In this setup the storage device is unaware of the nature of the drives (MBR or otherwise) and so you should only need to configure the RAID array and iSCSI connection settings on the storage box leaving anything to do with formatting alone. As said before MBR will only do for 2TB and any higher you need GPT.

Cheers - moved all the data into a sub folder and it works a treat. This is a truely great little program

Seem to be having some problems with getting HAP up and running Problem appears to be that some of the files that HAP are using are pointing to the wrong location (as you can see in Capture-3) - I believe (fingers crossed) that I've got everything configured right in the web.config file (attached with Passwords removed) and have followed the YouTube video as to how to setup HAP. I'm using v6.3 of HAP with IIS 7.5 on Server 2008 R2 and its a Vanilla network. Any clues as to where I should be looking would be grand Web.txt

2008R2 has the primary partition marked as D drive

Could you post a screen shot of disk management? -
Mines a custom built - Zotac Zbox AMD E-350 APU - £158 OCZ Vertex 3 120Gb SSD - £205 4Gb DDR3 1066mhz RAM - £45 Any Windows OS of your choice (I just got a OEM copy of Windows 7 and then invoked our Schools Agreement (at least I think I can still work it that way!)) - £££ This machine does fly and its all thanks to the SSD working at 6Gb/s and the AMD Fusion APU easily handles anything (expecily if the application can use the GPU) including Photoshop, Movie Maker and a million RDP/IE9 sessions. It also sits on the back of my monitor with a VESA mount and I do DVD burning through a USB drive (but to be honist I haven't had to touch a DVD since I first got this wonderful machine).

Which Citrix product are you looking at specifically?

One of the first things I did when starting my latest job was to move MRBS from XAMPP to IIS - as DrCheese has said the Microsoft Web Platform is easy to install and again as other have said its easy enough to restrict access to the folder that contains the MRBS files so only your staff members security group can get on to it. Make sure you have a look at Windows Authentication as well - works great with Internet Explorer and transparently logs the users in using their Username/Password. We have two systems setup - one for IT Room Bookings which any staff member can book and then another for 'Site Room Bookings' on this we have made it so that only select admins can book (as defined in the config.ini file).

IE10 when it comes out

Dosn't work in IE9 (not an invitation for people to come and tell me I should be using Firefox or something else!)

What I would imagine is they support Pro because Home Premium (the edition 'below it') doesn’t do things like domain join - so going with that reasoning they would support enterprise as well.

Im always happy to profess my love for HP servers with AMD processors and we have a DL385 G7 (a single 8 core for us) however as has already been said it would be a little overkill. I don't know if the DL165 series are covered as well but we use these with our SAN to host 'the network' (AD/Web services/WDS and so on) then use the DL385s for our virtual desktop setup.

I think the key thing (as with all kinds of training) is to find out where the training needs are - so what is it that people need to get from any kind of guide and what problems are they having now that can be resolved through a guide. However...personaly I think a poster of the websites key features/benifits would be a bit more benifical than a guide, (and this is all in my own opinion) who wants to read a 10 page block of black and white text when they can have a A4/A5 handout with pretty pictures

As others have said video editing or dragging any kind of large number of files over the internet would take forever and might not even be horribly reliable. Your best bet would probably be in a QNAP box with iSCSI built in - it would appear as an aditional drive on your server which you could then move all your student data onto. Unlike storage servers from people like HP and so on you can use your own drives (don't totaly cheap out on them though as this is students work we are talking about here and downtime should be limited as much as possible). We use a QNAP at one of our Primary Schools for use with Windows Server Backup (runs overnight every night) and it works a treat

Have a look at the plugins - GD Pages Navigator and PageMash they should be able to help you do this.

Yeah its a useful bit of kit - I used it to make my own site (recommendmeapc.co.uk - Advice on the best PCs) my last schools site (Langtree School: Home) and a few others. -

I've made all of my sites using WordPress with the theme created in something called Artisteer (Artisteer - web design software and joomla template maker) it dosn't cost to much and makes quick layout changes easy (still having some know how of web design will help you tweek).
