What Thin clents are you using? & how are you porting out to the clients (Citrix, RDP, etc)

Not sure if the AT command still works in Vista, but it works with XP, Server 2003. Go to a command prompt (DOS box) type 'at 00:00 shutdown -s -m \\PC01 -t 60 -c "Shutting down system"' where 00:00 is the time you want this to take place. I assume Vista has the shutdown command.

It was only a suggestion. There are many reasons that I prefer a thin client network, shadowing is just one of them. How many PC's do you have go down in a week/month??

Not all kids are bad. If they shouted at me about unblocking a game I would just block more. They know who is boss. It always the bad ones that are playing around anyway. Luckily it's not too bad here.

What you really want for this is Netmanager from Precedence Technologies. They had added this function in the last six months & once it is set up it works with a couple of clicks. http://www.precedence.co.uk/

I have been using Splitters for some time now. I think I have three in action at present. Two are being used to get a couple of printers on the network. Not experienced any problems at all.

I was given the decision wether to have SWAN or not. I chose not, After I had weighed up all the extra costs etc. We are on a 2mb broadband connection at present with RM. To be honest with you, I haven't noticed a great difference in the speed between the two. I know the contention ratio is an issue, but this doesn't seem to affect us at the moment. I also know if we had SWAN it would be a 8mb or 10mb connection (cant remember). I just dont think it is worth the money & if we had problems with AV as the other school is I would not be too impressed. Anyway, if anyone knows of an answer I would appreciate it.

Yes, the AV progs that are in use are AVG & Clamwin. With Clamwin I get this message: nonblock_connect: connect timing out (30 secs) I am assuming that the school may need to ask the Hampshire SWAN lot about this. God, I am glad I never went down the road of SWAN at my school.

Don't know if anyone has had this problem, but I help out a primary school as well as doing my main job at the local 11-18. They have recently got the Hampshire SWAN service installed & are now unable to update the anti-virus software. I am assuming that SWAN is blocking this somehow, as it used to be fine with thier old BT broadband connection. Anyone know of a solution to this?

Please dont get one with a Windows OS on it. It is going to break at some time, just like the desktop versions.

Get a thin client network with Citrix Presentation server. There is a shadow feature. You can select the users you want to watch, send them a message, log them off, plus more. The head of ICT here loves it. I use it to catch them on websites that they shouldn't be on so that I can block the site. If they don't do as they are told they are logged off of the system.

I thought it was the kids that caused all of our illnesses. you could be right though, the teachers cause alot of my illness. Well they make me feel sick any how.

Lets face it, we are all gonna snuff it at some time. Be it naturally or with some sort of disease. If our brains are fried by the radio waves first, we won't even know or care. I am not normally a pesamist.

Yeah, I saw this one. Never bothered with kids anyway, you get put off after working in a school.

I am inclined to agree with Lee_K_81. If you see the pupils outside of school, you would think that thier mobile phones had been stuck to thier ears. You may find that there are mobile phone masts in close proximity to where the school is or ever where the kids live. I don't think a wireless network would have that much effect. Just look at the range you get & compare that to a mobile phone network. Which do you think pokes out the highest amount of radio waves? As regards to a teacher standing in front of the projector, well that is just asking for trouble. Would you stand & stare at the sun? I don't think so.

Thanks Kyle, I just know how bad they are around here for not telling us stuff. They may let us know when it happens though. You never know, my pay may increase. It is pretty bad at the moment & I could do with an assistant (some hopes).

Looks to be a similar project to ThinStation. It is an excellent idea though, to turn your old hardware into thin clients. I must admit I have moved away from turning the old legacy machine into thinclient, but have still got some running on the network. These are mostly Pentium 233mhz machines. I found that uping the system memory does help though. I think the ones I have running have 128mb ram. They run Windows 2003 server with no problem. Anyway, good luck with this project.
