Ditto to what @themightymrp said, MDT holds all my drivers but must admit never thought of using dpinst, cracking idea!

I must admit I tend to avoid these as well..... I grab the PCI/VEN details and then either use PCIDatabase.com or google

I can see the sense in that, especially when looking at SSL Certs and Office 365 integration. As I'm still on the pen and paper stage it can be changed. AV - currently have Avira installed - but the school purchased Kaspersky before I arrived so I will be starting fresh. Software Distribution - Going on a SCCM Course in a couple of weeks. Hoping I can import my existing MSIs Printers - My technician doesnt know this yet but that will be his thing - check details, download drivers etc File Servers - yes will be VMs and already posted on here about server roles - will be running roles on seperate VMs. I have a sevrer setup with several installations of Server 2012R2 ready to be turned on and assigned roles etc. Random Services - I havent come across any yet! - But there is still time! Feb half term - doing a full audit of the workstations to make sure we have all the software to hand when redeploying new images. Already started those conversations with staff, I am not taking the current setup as gospel. Didnt think about creating a trust! - excellent idea, will be adding that to the planning sheet. A lot of the services will be redone from scratch - eg. Meraki Wireless will be reconfigured to use RADIUS so it talks to Smoothwall nicely. The current servers VMs will be powered down and exported to a seperate Server so they can be started if any issues (or that is the current plan) I have a weekly meeting with the head of IT to keep him in the loop and he reports back to the head. Not looking to change workstation OS or Office version - so all good on that side of things. I was thinking about a Hybrid solution. I have approx 1500 mailboxes to move over so Im thinking this will take some time. Current thinking is start looking at configuring a hybrid config and start moving in a couple of weeks. - Any adivce, crib sheets welcome MX Records - I have access to change along with DNS records. Oh dont worry I will be asking plenty of questions! Why struggle when there are people who have been through this before.

In the middle of drawning up plans to start a fresh for September. Looking at changing domain name as current domains uses xxx.local. New domain will be xxx.internal (tick) Looked at server deployment - happy with that. (tick) Looking at creating new GPOs as there are some issues with existing GPOs (tick) I've gone through this in my head so many times that I am now second guessing myself with things and need a calming reassurance from people who have done this before. SIMS & Solus 3 -------------- SIMS.net - should be a case of remove from old domain and add to new domain and checking permissions (Server Name and IP Address will not be changing) Solus 3 (should work as all work station are being rebuilt with a fresh install of Solus and Sims) - first time Ive use Solus 3 so not 100% sure this is correct. Exchange 2010 - Office 365 --------------------------- Will be migrating to Office 365 - and removing the on premise exchnage server. Currently username and password are sync'd to allow Office 365 Logons - not tested any mail migrations yet.. will need to seek advise on this as never done it before and not sure on the best approach. User Accounts ------------- Looking to purchase Salamander to create username and Office 365 email accounts from SIMS using the existing Username format - Once created, work would be restored (should be as simple that shouldnt it?) So...... after reading this - am I over thinking things? Have I missed anything? Am I being a complete idiot? ARRRRGGGHHHH - need more coffee!!

Looking to for purchase a new NAS box to store backups using DPM2012. - Budget of approx £3K could possibly stretch to 4K if needed but prefer to stick around the £3k mark. Inherited an 8TB Buffalo NAS and this is running short on space! My plan is to purchase a bigger NAS, and then replicate Critical data to the 8TB NAS If any suppliers are reading this - feel free to PM me with quotes :-)

Thanks for the all the comments and suggestion which have been taken on board and a new revised plan is in my notepad (a paper based one!) For some reason I am finding it easier to write things in my notepad as and when I think of them and also helps as a handy guide When I'm not so full of the lurgy I made find the notepad and put the revised version on here another once over

I did think about that when looking at the design and tried to keep the number of VMs down - but yes would make more sense to split them Hopefully getting approval to attend a SCCM training course, so if approved then I will be using SCCM instead of WDS, MDT etc... if no approval then will be using WDS etc.... My thoughts were since DC only dealing with logons requests etc then utilise the server to do additional roles - again to keep the number of VMs down. It does make sense though separating WSUS and WDS etc. Sorry, my fault for not explaining my thought process properly, yes would be difficult moving users - my intention was to split the year groups between the the different VMs/hosts. The initial design would be for September. Once set up, a year group would stay on that server until they leave. When a year group leaves and archived, the incoming year group would take its place on that server (if that makes sense) Currently have all Staff, Students and Shared Docs on one VM and at times it runs like a three legged donkey especially when students are creating/editing large files. So my intention was to spread the load/traffic between the servers.

Yea spoke to both smoothwall and meraki at Bett today and both companies were really helpful and talked me through the process . Just need time to look at it now

I use a 27" Mac with 32Gb Ram and 1TB drive running Parallels for testing Server stuff etc.... I CBA due booting to I'm running Win7 just for Elite until the Mac versions is released

My previous place I had one, details of all the servers, roles, details like that. My current place - none what so ever! Will have one in place by september tho as re-doing the network from scratch in August (but busy planning now)

Currently my Meraki system is setup using a Shared Key which I want to change to a SSL Logon. (Done tested and happy with) Does anyone know if Meraki SSL Logons are able to be passed through to Smoothwall as a SSO or will I need them to log on to Smoothwall using SSL as well? I could get Meraki to assigned the SSID to a Smoothwall Group but I want to be able to track User Activity. Cheers :-)

Not been for the last 3 years so I'm looking forward to going….. Need to replace some ageing tech on both the infrastructure side and classrooms side of things. Products to make my life easier managing the network. Speak to reps about about products we already use and see what they have to offer. Training providers - looking to update my skill set with things like SCCM etc…. And more than anything to catch up with friends.

Happy to see others do it in a way I am currently planning.... make me all warm and fuzzy inside

Ah, that makes more sense... Only just started at this school and looking at making some changes. According to our MS Licensing Agreement we have 1 Stnd SSCM License, 1 DataCtr License and approx. 90 SCCM ConfigMgr Licenses. So..... If I want to cover 4 HyperV nodes I am going to need another 3 DataCtr Licences and more Stnd Licenses for any physical servers I may have. I'm assuming the ConfigMgr Licenses cover the workstation bits? which would make sense as we have approx. 90 full time staff.

Long story short.... looking at possibly deploying SCCM for imaging, updates, packages etc..... when I redo the network from scratch ready for September. Heard lots of interesting things about SSCM but have never seen or used it.......... or am I better avoiding it and sticking with MDT, WSUS, etc.... I have access to SCCM 2012r2 Standard, SCCM 2012r2 DataCenter, and SCCM2012r2 Client Management Suite. Some kind soul point me in the direction most suitable for a Secondary School. Also.....anyone recommend any training providers for SCCM (Manchester area preferably) Cheers

Looking at redoing the network from scratch and wondered how people setup up their GPO settings. I'm thinking of the following Main GPOs containing multiple settings ------------------------------------------- All User GPO (Global Settings for all users) All Computers GPO (Global computer settings) Staff GPO Student GPO Followed by Individual GPOs containing single settings ----------------------------------------------- Admin Drives (for admin staff) Software Deployment Etc, Etc...... Any advice/warnings/pit falls to avoid are welcomed

Site closed until monday so I've remoting in trying to get to grips with new school/new setup and trying to track down a rogue gpo setting which for the life of me I cannot find. Have since taken the decision that come the August holidays I am going to have new 2012r2 installations with new active directory. I'm currently sat planning and configuring VM installations of server 2012.
