  1. I think 'happydays' might just be 'Paul, their most teccie sales guy'
  2. It is a relatively small school, but I think the majority of students do have their own. But at the moment they can only use them if the teacher gives the nod or in their dorms if boarding. They have no access to wireless or network. I recently had to chop off a girls toes when I saw her contemplating plugging her patch lead into a network point... We are making the site 'hot' in preperation for sharepoint and laptop access...
  3. How do you guys do it? Do you make them buy their own laptops or lease/buy from school? What do you do about AV. Buy there own or install school AV? Do you attach to the domain or run a seperate network with its own dedicated proxy and ADSL line? Anybody got a schematic, network topology I can look at? My NM has what I think a strange concept... Comments greaty appreciated - sorry if it's been covered before, I did try searching.
  4. Well, you'd hope it's his daughter...
  5. I concur! He's a cheeky git! 3 strikes - i'm outta here!
  6. Have you checked the 'Schools ICT Policy' section? http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=18
  7. 3 minute walk down an alley way - pass the local (village owned) pub and through the back gate into the rose garden...to the main building the Knights Templar lived...its true! My office is actually in the original dungeon! A bit about the school - then i'll shut up. Originally located in Ealing, London, the College moved to the Temple Dinsley estate in 1935. The main building is a magnificent Queen Anne mansion dating from 1714. At the turn of this century, the celebrated architect Sir Edwin Lutyens was commissioned to enlarge the house and redesign the formal gardens. More recently, in 1995 much of the fine building was modernised and refurbished. The Dower House is located a short walk from the main building. In January 1992 the Dower House was opened as a new Sixth Form House, following extensive renovation and the building of a new wing. The historic houses are complemented by: a separate classroom block, a modern science centre and a spacious sports hall. All subsequent buildings and developments at the School are sympathetically undertaken. The formal gardens and the 183 acres of parkland provide an idyllic, safe and tranquil learning environment for our girls. The grounds include all of the School’s sports facilities and are also used to inspire artists and challenge scientists! The formal rose garden, where the influence of Gertrude Jekyll is plainly evident, is a stunning location for girls and staff to relax and for parents to enjoy at key school events.
  8. NOD32 across the board at home. Can't fault it. Small footprint and not too resource hungry. Plus I get it free
  9. All that stuff and he uses Norton of all things.... Although it looks like he's tried lobbing it in the bin but missed - i'll give him the benefit of the doubt! GEEK
  10. Surely they have just used one of the wysiwyg templates?...and not very well! They didn't even choose one of the nice ones to rip off...
  11. Is there a third party mixer installed, like soundMAX or equivalent? Maybe that is disabled in startup?
  12. I made a few of these on-site before, easy peasy. Just pop into RS or maplin and buy the bits... Not sure about health & safety though!
  13. Wish I had a nice place to work. Here are a few pics of what I have to put up with...
  14. WE STILL HAVE THE DAMN HEATING ON! So, that is what I would change. Nothing more I hate than beads of sweat running down your arm! Arghhh!
  15. JBOD always makes me laugh. Right guys, we need a super duper technical name for this system we have devised. Something cool and catchy, preferably something we can use with an acronym... How about JBOD - sounds technical but actually isn't!
  16. Interestingly - b3ta.com is not blocked but samkline.com is...
  17. Rings a bell, think I've read about it before. Free too if I remember - i'll give it a google. Thanks Geoff
  18. How do you control your 'waste paper'? I have just worked out that per fortnight, we waste approximately 17500 sheets in unclaimed printouts! Thats 173cm's in height. That's 7 boxes each containing 5 reams! One of the main culprits - the 'user seperator' page that the NM insists on. I am working on scrapping that idea via the upper echelons. What do you guys use to monitor paper usage? When I was at school, we had a card/account number system. The problem here is it's a fee paying school so we can't charge without causing uproar. But maybe stark statistics and the fact we are known to be proactively monitoring usage will stop some of the wastage...? Ben
  19. I used to get 3TB out of a 1u rack. 4 hot-swap SATA-II drives and a redundant PSU to boot Generally used open-e NAS but sometimes Windows Storage Server. Obviously this was never as cheap as a 'commercial' product but very reliable/scaleable.
  20. No problem simongrahamuk, i'm sure it's not going to be too disimilar... Thank you
  21. ...what are your responsibilities as NM. What does your position involve? Do you have a Job Spec you can put up? Thanks in advance Ben
  22. Dump a load of porn on her personal drive and 'find it' whilst adhearing to RIPA... ...how do you like those cookies beee-atch Obviously I don't mean that. That would be an awful thing to do.
  23. Just spent ages writing a long winded reply and then had some kind of cookie error; ERROR Please enable cookies to post on this site. If you feel that you have reached this message in error please refresh the preceding page once and post again But ultimately, worked in industry for 8 years. KPMG (data centre), Jaguar (HPC/VR), Jim Henson (render nodes and clusters) etc etc. All reasonably stressful but nothing compared to being self employed and having 3 lads work for you. That is a whole new level of stress!!!! Current role in the school is severley overpaid, I get 3 meals a day and rent a school owned cottage at a stupid price. Feet arse and landed come to mind! But this is just a 'cool down' after 8 years hard slog. I think HPC and storage is the future and its what I enjoy and am reasonably 'OK' at So, it all depends not just on the role/company - but what kind of person you are too. I personally prefer working under pressure.
