Lightspeed MDM for Android
Eappariello replied to Simcfc73's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Android support has just entered to the preview release phase, so its not far off general release. The same MDM hierarchical interface thats used for iOS management has been utilised, so you should see "Android" banners next to payloads supported. New features and payloads will be added on a regular basis. Simon -
Just recieved a Pivos Xios. Like the look of this as it has XBMC hardware decoder integration and you can run XBMC only in Linux or run Android JB and use the play store and all the apps etc. Ill post what I think of it if anyone is interested after I have put it through its passes and thrown some Add Ins a it.

Anyone using My Big Campus ?
Eappariello replied to Bashir's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Hi. Yes that's what it is for. It should display documents and files that you can use anywhere in MBC the same as google docs. I have just tested mine and I can see all my word and PowerPoint docs Give the support team a call or email, they can test this further but seems to be working for me. Simon -
That worked Thanks I am on paternity leave this week so a bit slow off the blocks It should not be a problem going via TMG you just have to have a outbound firewall and NAT rule for the rocket IP to allow the ports the rocket needs. Namely TCP 80, 443, 1999 and UDP 1311. If your having trouble our support team can help. You get full complimentary support Before and after purchase Drop me a pm if you want me to pass on your details to support. Simon

Anyone using My Big Campus ?
Eappariello replied to Bashir's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yes. MyBigCampus links to your rocket appliance and can use the LDAP connector to hook into your AD directory for user authentication. The CSV import document you found is for schools to provision in advance user accounts, groups, and group membership from their MIS system. This is a worthwhile step for the VLE elements. If you just want to have students and staff sign in, and use MBC without this provisioning step you can direct them towards the sign up link on the home page. They can use the sign up steps to create thier user accont or you can create an invitation code (use the man with cog icon and select note users to MBc) and send this code to your students and staff. Support guys can step you through this. Simon -

Eappariello replied to Bashir's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thats the only way to integrate with a MIS systems right now as it is a universal technique. However there is work going on to create an easier method to connect to a SIMS system. The support guys can help also - let me know if you would like me to get them to contact you. Simon -

If you hook the rocket into your directory, MBC will then hook into your rocket for authentication so the kids will just use their usual school username/password. Plus content on put on MBC by your staff will be dynamically allowed. Uploading of user and group info / integration with MIS systems, getting easier and more connector based in the summer. Interested to know which bits you find US based, always looking to add more localization options (9 languages coming soon) Parent portal is also available now. Simon -
Lightspeed vs Smoothwall

Fair points. Thanks for taking the time to give some feedback, we will use it to improve our demo process. -
Lightspeed vs Smoothwall
Eappariello replied to Jollity's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
All of the rocket appliances run the same code, from the bottle rocket to the 10GB rocket, so all features are the same on every hardware model, its just a matter of throughput. Thanks for the feedback however, I will endeavour to see if we can improve the Wiki in this area. Did you happen to contact support with this question, or attend the free web essentials course, or free training videos ? or was you not informed about them ? Thanks again for the feedback Simon -

[ipad] lightspeed Management without a mac?
Eappariello replied to Bev's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Bev, It is not possible to lock a MDM profile. However we will send a real time email alert when any MDM profile is removed, and if you go into the devices section on the blue ribbon, you will see several reports and one just for devices that have had their MDM profile removed. When you remove a MDM profile you also remove all restrictions and Apps deployed with the MDM. So, if you use the MDM to set up the wifi settings, and keep the wifi password secret, its a great way of deterring students from removing the MDM profile as they will loose Internet access. Simon -
[ipad] lightspeed Management without a mac?
Eappariello replied to Bev's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Bev, SovietRussia (The contributer here not the concept ), is spot on. Supervised mode enabled some features such as Single App mode, Global proxy, disabling imessage, and stopping app removal etc, but is not an essential step to be able to use other management features, restrictions, and app deployment. We have put a blue "supervised" banner next to any restriction that needs the devices to be in supervised mode. Also, enabling supervised mode will disable many personalisation features such as the ability to sync with iTunes on any device other than the Mac that you used to enable supervised mode. So generally speaking you would only use supervised mode if it is a school owned device that changes hands, and does not need personalisation. Do let us know if you have other question, either here or give the support chaps a call as vyperz mentioned. Simon -
Your Lightspeed appliance can provide a captive portal linked to your directory system also, if you can run both VLANS through it.

Edugames unlimited, How to block?
Eappariello replied to vortex999's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We have moved the URL to the games category. However because this child domain "sites.google.com" could bring up content unrelated to google services at any time, I would suggest moving the whole child domain to a custom category and block it for students. Please contact the support guys with a call/email/chat session if you need further help. Simon -
Just to add some more info, to that great reply: If your on version 2.2.17> you can have different authentication lifetimes per User, Group or User OU. Handy for just authenticating students for a class length of time, but staff for longer. You can also force / manually log out a web authentication by going to http://lsaccess.me/logout

Lightspeed vs Smoothwall
Eappariello replied to Jollity's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
To make this subject easier to manage (for those who need simplicity), and to help protect those users actually working or completing online exams etc, the lightspeed appliance takes a different approach to bandwidth management. The appliance lets you set thresholds of line usage e.g 80%, then blocks new connections with a custom message, unless the user is going to categories in an exception list (i.e Education, Online Exams etc). As the appliance is a layer 2 bridge it inspects all TCP and UDP connections, so has the complete bandwidth picture rather than just WEB traffic. Its a 2 step setup. -
Lightspeed vs Smoothwall
Eappariello replied to Jollity's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yep will almost certainly be duplex mismatch - autosense doesn't always get it right, and some equipment re tests every so often also so settings can change. Its generally good practise to hard set speeds in the computer room, especially if connecting NIC to NIC rather than NIC to Switch. Simon -

Managing and configuring iPads
Eappariello replied to bw99's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Indeed it does. And you get 50% off if you buy over 20 copies (so if you need more than 11 worth buying 20 ). A VPP compatible MDM will redeem the VPP codes and push out the paid Apps for you, without having to pull all the devices back to plug into Configurator. Simon -
Managing and configuring iPads
Eappariello replied to bw99's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I think we all have to think a little differently when dealing with mobile devices like IPADS. They are very personal, are designed to be personal, and for that reason we have to think about the ongoing management of them in a different way. A MDM can help track, audit, and manage (to an extent, but perhaps not like desktop PC's) the devices, and also help deliver Apps, and content to them. With mobile devices, unlike desktops, you might never know where or who is using them, so the ongoing management aspects are more important. There are certain IOS payloads that you can pushed out with a MDM to help however - you can disable the iTunes store, you can limit Apps and content such as TV, Movies etc by age rating, you can turn of Apps altogether, and you can lock a device to a single App (Guided App mode). Put this together with the Global proxy feature and point the devices at a compatible filter, and you can also control the web content and App usage from the internet. Choose a MDM that lets you give this control to the teachers in the classroom, and you can at least deliver the Apps and content the educators want to use, and also let them enforce restrictions when needed. Im sure there is a solution out there like that Simon -
Server 2003 R2 - Having a mare!
Eappariello replied to bodminman's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Sounds like a IP clash. Although there should be something in the system log to indicate that. Can you still ping the old IP, that would confirm that. -
Chris, What you can achieve with a MDM system is really governed by Apple. They allow certain payloads to be pushed to the IOS devices so you will find most MDM systems when dealing with IOS at least fairly close in functionality. Same for Apps, Apple support 3 models for App deployment, personal, institutional, and layered. Sounds like you need layered or personal but your Apple sales people can advise best. As you rightly point out, MDM is about the ongoing management of these mobile devices, and in a 1:1 environment you just don't know when you might see them again to plug them into Apple Configurator. Lightspeed have designed something just for education if you PM me I can send a link to the datasheet ( don't think I am allowed to post marketing material here). We have just taken a different a slant on things by allowing you to create a hierarchical structure for the school. This allows users to be part of multiple classes, receive multiple payloads/restrictions, and Apps depending on what classes they are a member of, and it also facilitates delegated administration. For example the school may want all devices to have the Pages App so that would be deployed at the school level, however Mrs Smith may be a admin of a level in hierarchical for her Math class and want her students to have a Calculator App, so she can push that out just to the students in her class. We can link with a MIS system to auto create the hierarchy and users also. Simon
