No digital cams? I would refuse to sit scanning pics for the website!

I swear by then 2600n's we have around 8 of them, used in class rooms and offices. They are a good quality color laser, at a decent price. If anything major goes wrong, as others have said, buy a new one. Also having so many of the same type means keeping stock levels and negotiating prices is easier.

He seems to be quite biased towards inkjets and not all of what he says is applicable here. I pay ~£180 for a 2600N, the toners that come with it are "sample" or "starter" toners i.e. only half full. toners are ~£35 each. Giving a replacement cost of ~£142 for all 4. On a negative side, it does seem to eat toners, but that could well be because ourstaff like to print memos (i dont know whats wrong with email) with pretty full colour pictures on them.

Turn the monitor upside down? Or stand on your head whilst reading? Or tell people to print it and turn it the right way. Sorry, somebody had to say it. if you have cutePDF (or similar free alternative) open the PDF with Acrobat reader, there is a button to "rotate clockwise" (or anti clockwise), rotate til it's the right way up, then print it to cutePDF. It would be a lot quicker to re-scan, but if the source document is no longer available it may be your only option.

It's not online but we use Audacity (it's free). We actually run it across the network without any problems. Out of interest are you staying with DiDA we decided to drop it pretty quickly and and are doing the OCR course instead.

Me too! but alas, it's been filtered centrally. I think the BGFL team enjoy spoiling our fun (filtering it as kids try and access it so we can see frustration) as much as we enjoy spoiling the kids fun! ;-)

Yep had that prob too. We put PC's are in cages, not locked ones, just baskets under desk with only the front accessible to the kids. The kids physically lift the PCs out of the cages and unplug stuff. God knows what the teachers are doing while the kids are under the desk messing with the computers! Seems to be worse in the suite that teachers can book, there is no sense of ownership and they dont seem to care, yet they're the first to complain..... i'll finish ranting now

Yup, figured that would be it....... Same as the mouse balls (optical would be too nickable). Be much easier and cheaper to clue their grubby little hands together.

Anybody have problems with the fantastic feature of a voltage switch on power supplies of PC's. Our little darlings have just discovered that if you change it, it makes the PC go bang and smell of burning! Any solutions that work? We're on the brink of getting a load of plastic and glueing it on-to the back of the PSU, however if one then goes of natural causes i'm guessing it would invalidate the warranty! Can't win!

Its that program free? I know they have an emergency edition demo which will restore files less than 64KB. PM me if you need any further info

I use a program called R-Studio which i've been very impressed with. Restored no-end of files off memory sticks / floppy disks that gone corrupt and ask to be formatted. It's made us real life-savers at times.

We tend to block websites real-time, in the first instance this meant our techies were remotely watching kids a lot, but as the field of games available got smaller there is less going on. I know certain teachers turn a blind eye to games, but we have tried to implement a policy of WE dont allow games on OUR machines. Then you dont have to worry about what one teacher allows and another doesnt. We have a very good ICT co-ordinator who backs us on this which helps. We tend to use our discression to block pupils internet, e.g. persistent gaming will earn a ban. Attempting to download something like limewire or other P2P will earn instant internet ban. Porn will earn instant disabling of account, mainly so they cant delete it or try and hide it. For a pupil to be re-enabled we ask for permission off their year tutor, ICT co-ordinator or SMT, on the understanding that anything else will earn another ban. We dont want to hinder teaching and learning, but at the same time we want to protect our network.

Tut tut tut, whose been switching DC's off and deleting them from AD without doing a proper demotion. We had same problem (not my causing i hasten to add), went un-noticed for ages, then we installed exchange and this highlighted the problem as email would stop working when the GC / DC's replicated and got stuck on the DC that didnt exist anymore. Wasnt pretty to fix. If this is the problem you will need ADSIedit which allows you to edit the AD schema. If i remember correctly the dead DC should still be under domain --> DC="school" --> CN=System --> CN=File Replication Service --> CN-Domain System Volume (SYSVOL share) --> CN="Dead DC". You *should* be able to delete it in here without any major repercussions. Wouldn't that defeat the purpose? ITIdiots? Unless they set up a site for professionals / advanced hobiests, even better if it was focused towards those in the education sector..... Wait, isnt that edugeek? I see what you are suggesting but they are trying to cater for the basics and using Shabih as a guinea pig. The advanced stuff may be difficult to test out. Maybe a ITidiots / edugeek partnership to provide the more advanced things.

Hi, yes it is possible. If you have given the admin user send as privigiles for the mailbox of the pastoral account. Go to /exchange/pastoral account. You will be able to log on using the admin member of staff's password and username. As far as i'm aware that is the only way. lol, that used to happen to me. Although the phone was on the other techs desk people used to come in and specifically ask me to do something..... then i got moaned at for "cherry picking" the jobs! Yeah like i want to do twice the work!

We are: 1 SM / NM - same as yours but no teaching, instead some assessment & timetabling stuff. 2 Techs - one mainly hardware, one mainly software. 1 currently spends 50% of time in campus schools we are about to hire a junior tech who will do a bit of everything. Maybe taking some of the external support to campus schools. same chain of command really. Techs will have no real authority over junior tech as such, but may end up giving tasks, when they are busy doing stuff sm delegates.

The Schools Agreement works in a different way to the Select Agreement (which I guess is what the above folks are talking about). Andy Acutually on that subject. Does anybody have a difinitive explanation of the differences between: Schools Agreement Select Agreement Volume Licensing Agreement Which works out most cost effective? Or is it a case of individual school needs?

Hi, I am experimenting with providing some solutions for win98 software and unbuntu using VMWare Server. I think i can make do without the kids needing to log on to the network, which means i dont have to worry about clashing VM guest machine names, but i would like to be able to automatically connect/mount to the users h: on the host machine. I believe that this is possible in MS Virtual PC once the Virtual Machine Additions are installed, but vPC doesnt give the the rest of the functionality i want. Does anybody have any tips on how to do this, or if it's even possible, in VMWare server / player? Thanks

edit: i believe ramesys HAD a very very good price. Unless its because we're part of WMNet (west midlands). Prices for different LA's might be different.

Yeah!!!! I had an Amiga 500+ (mustn't forget the +) it was only out for about 6 months before it was usurped by the Amiga 600. It came with captain planet, bart vs space mutants. Real quality games. Dont laugh i mean it. They were great! I love nostalgia!

@AshF: the mac joke was just that: a joke. I agree that the arguments are childish. But mac started it.... (how childish did that sound!) Their current ad campaign just sounds to me like, we will never beat m$ in the work place lets concentrate on the home. But they do not have the software house backing to do so. There are very few games released on the mac, when they are they are amazing quality, but they're not there very often. I dont use a mac but i'd like to, especially for any graphics work i'm doing. The whole point of me chipping in to this thread was the mac ad campaign. Why can't we just say here's a mac. Here's what it does. Here's Vista, here's what it does. Here's linux, here's what it does. Now you choose what YOU want to do.
