  1. I am thinking about commissioning an industrial wing with rental office space. Funnilly enough, £10k per day. Bargin considering the sceanic views of Box Jeallyfish on offer
  2. No, it's filters down. Or, more correctly, the folder permissions are set by GUID which you won't be changing. Windows is just being nice and looking up the current username for that GUID to display in the folder permissions.
  3. I was eyeing up a mid Pacific location, maybe near a fault line to tap in to a heat/energy source. I think the iceberg might have melted long before it gets back to base No, not at all. It's only when I mention the colour I want people look at me a bit funny! Mmm, this was supposed to be a retire present for myself. A secret bond villan hideout. I suppose every good bond villan needs an army of goons, I can have my own private army of techs
  4. You are right, we both know you are right. But mentioning it public may make me rethink renting out the granny annex with specail cold store for your human experiments (I won't ask). I have been thinking of giving to a hare krishna cult instead... Funny you should mention submarines. I'm actually finding very difficult to source one. I ask for a nuclear powered sub and no-one bats an eyelid. I mention the colour I want and they think I'm taking the p*ss. It's not as if I want to live on it! That's what the secret(?) underwater base is for...
  5. I would, you know I would, but I do need to make sure I can afford the helipad disguised as a disused oil rig complete with preassurised lift to alpha dome. Then there is the maglev uni-rail train system and connecting tunnels between alpha dome, beta dome and the west wing. It all costs money you know
  6. Weeelll, now you mention it. I'm just waiting for my Euromillions winnings to clear the bank then I do have an amazing bond villan style hideout all planned out. I was hoping that no one noticed my fibre cables running along the beach though, and I'm thinking standard wifi inside the domes. Not sure what I'd use this new tech for? I suppose it'd give me Internet coverage in the garden, just need a tablet rated for 20,000 leagues
  7. While I don't doubt that for one minute, if you are struggling then he should be the first to know. Even if it's only for a pep talk. At the end of the day, if he has a heavy work load then it's in his best interest to make sure you have all the tools you need to work as efficently and autonomously as possible. One my techs here, reasonably new to the job, has just found a NVQ Level 2/3 course he can do during work time that I'm happy to support him in (about an hour of my time each month). Maybe it's something to look into?
  8. Thanks Ben, Interesting to note, I've got AC Leigh visiting on Tuesday. Turns out they are the retail arm of that Ipswich based company I couldn't remember the name of! Slightly put off of SALTO as they need specially formatted cards - supplier lock in. We'll see what AC Leigh have to say and how their quote compares with the other one I received today.
  9. Is it this one... Tools -> Lookups -> Maintain Description: Roles Data Area: Staff
  10. I'm in the same boat as @Gongalong, Tied to Apple due to existing apps (Navigon GPS and AmpKit+). Otherwise I'd seriously consider a Galaxy S next time (so long as I can get 64Gb for the music). That said, I've no complaints with Apple other than price. Current phone is an iPhone 4S and it runs like a dream on IOS7. Infact I'm finding IOS7 faster and smoother than IOS6 was. Certainly not aware of any buggy problems.
  11. I can't see us using this with pupils. I did discuss cashless catering with our Business Manager but he didn't exactly warm to the idea. Likewise neither the library or lesson monitoring are likely candidates here for a high tech solution. This is purely a staff thing. Charge back photocopies to departments and prevent pupils getting into ICT suites unsupervised. On a side note @deano, Salto is one of the solutions I've already looked at. I think that's the one that Ipswich company I can't remember the name of supplies!
  12. Totally agree. We've made out P4-HT's last a year longer by buying them extra RAM and SSD's. Enabled us to have a rethink on a Multipoint solution that wasn't working so well in another room. Those SSD's will be going into some Acer Athlon-X2 when we replace the P4-HT's next summer. I can see us (also not strapped for cash) thinking the same way once the Acer Athlon-X2's are gone. Unless something seriously changes in the software world between now and then it's hard to throw away Dual-core i3's with 4Gb RAM. The only question for me is one of pupil use. After 4-years, what state is the kit in physically. The P4-HT's going this year have for various reasons been kept around much longer than they should have (about 5/6 years old?). They have seen much better days, beaten up old cases.
  13. I've seen the Paxton Net2 and wasn't sure if that's what we wanted. Brillant! I'll add them to my contact list. Already spoken with smart-lock.co.uk, and fired an e-mail off to a company in Ipswitch (can't find their name now!). @Millgate, Do just supply the cards/readers/printers or do you supply the door locks as well? If the later can you arrange fitting?
  14. Okay, getting confused now!?! Ideally this is what I want... All staff wear an ID badge, we want some kind of contactless technology for printing and door entry built into the ID badge (MiFare?). Photocopiers - log jobs to departments based on AD OU group staff is member of, information taken from ID badge Different door entry for different staff. Classrooms, all staff. Server room, IT Techs. Boiler Room, Site staff. etc. Most staff will only be able to access one type of door, other need to access multiple types of door (caretaker can get everywhere, etc) Seems to me the neatest solution is to tell the door - "only allow access to 'staff'", or "only allow access to 'technicians' and 'site'". Then tell the card "you can accesss 'staff' only", or "you can access 'techicians' and 'staff'", etc. Does that make sense? is it doable? am I barking up the wrong tree?
  15. So, when someone joins/leaves we have to go around all the doors (I'll assume photocopiers will be updated via the network) and reprogram them?
  16. Yeah, Biometrics is one can of worms I don't want to open. We unplugged the fingerprint reader from our library system rather than have that conversation with parents.
  17. So a single 1K MiFare card will operate both systems? Staff won't need to carry multiple cards for different systems? Good to know. @tech_guy, I don't suppose you know who makes/supplied/installed your door entry system by any chance?
  18. Doesn't Capita jealously guard access to the actual database? $$$$$? I have seen the database and I can't say it was structured or named in a way that would make it easy to figure out. I think you'd need Capita's API's and reference manuals to be able to do anything more than can already be done through the built in Reports system.
  19. Wow, GTA5 on PC - talk about retro gaming! Won't we have GTA6 out on console by then 2014? I'm surprised there's anyone on the planet who hasn't played the console orignal by then
  20. Anyone use them? We're about to have a new printer/MFD fleet install that use them. Got us thinking about door locks. We currently use code pads but the kids always find out the new codes with days of them being changed. Anyone using MiFare door entry systems? Any recommended suppliers out there? Also, I've seen the cards come in various memory sizes (1K, 4K, etc). Does that mean we can program a single card for multiple uses? Provide MFD login and restricted door access? Bear in mind that MFD logins will be individual and different staff will have different levels of door access (ie, only network staff in the server room). Thanks.
  21. We've just bought into CSE (CSE Asset Manager and Service Manager – software for schools) - Combines Asset Management and Helpdesk. Good package, great price, brilliant customer support.
  22. We have a 4-year replacement strategy and spend about £450 for each machine (inc. monitor). The last of the P4-HT's are due to go this year. Current spec is i3, 4GB, SSD. Don't think that will be revised for this years replacements, but might start asking the Quad-core/8Gb question next year. Not we are necerssarily running any thing that needs the extra omph.
  23. 1GbE, mostly in bonded pairs usind LACP.
  24. You should really talk to your line manager about this. Don't worry, they won't feel ill of you. A good line manager will see it as an opportunity to revisit how they support and train. After all they hired you for a reason, they must have seen something they liked at interview, right?
  25. As I alluded to above, the bit we've struggled with here is the rationale for making the change. We can put a managed WiFi in tomorrow, we just wouldn't use it. The starting point is the schools ICT vision. How does the SLT envisage IT being used in the school. If they are looking to go out and purchase loads of laptops, or are looking at 1:1 or BYOD then you have your reason to spend on the wireless infrastructure. £30k is a lot of money just so teachers can use their laptops wirelessly. Especially when every desk in the school has a hardwired point.
