  1. No, Hyper-V is a Type-1 hypervisor, it does not run on top of the host OS, more beside the host OS. The host install of windows runs in a special protected layer. I remember something about CPU's and processing 'rings' but alas without googling/wikipedia, that's as far as I get.
  2. What version of Windows? I've got a couple of ideas... Create 5x 2Tb VMDKs and then use Software RAID-0 in Windows to combine them into one drive? Don't use VMDK's, pass thru a physical 10Tb Lun directly to the VM in question?
  3. This entirely. We've just had a PM conversation pretty much thanks to this thread reminding me I'd unintentionally forgotten about you! Suppliers on here who get good feedback from peers are more likely to get past our gatekeeper (receptionist) than someone advertising in the back of a magazine I've never heard of...
  4. What's a magazine? Is it like a website you hold in your hands? How does it update itself? I've checked wikipedia, it suggests 'periodically', not sure what that means but it sounds slow
  5. I really, really wouldn't - personally. Is it only a DC or does it have other roles (other than DNS)? Does it hold any of your FSMO roles? My gut instinct would be to clean up your AD with it turned off. Make sure every mention of the server is removed from DNS, AD Users, AD Sites&Services, etc. Full meta data cleanup, the works. Then build a new DC in it's place. New name, new IP. But then I'm paranoid about these sorts of things.
  6. I'd sooner an AIO...
  7. I just looked at your website - why didn't you have them last time I was buying! We have a suite of the Stone AIO and, sorry Colin, they are very, very nice. As are the the Stone NUC's. As always Novatech do similar (the same?) NUC's as Stone. Aaaand, yes Colin , VeryPC are more than worth a look. Shame I got to wait till the summer before I can look at those AIO's
  8. I assume you are looking at NAS boxes? I'm yet to find one that doesn't support SMB shares (although now I've said, no doubt one exists). Usually you need to go through the boxes web interface to enable SMB support and create a shared folder in its file system. Once you've done that you can map the drive to any PC the same as any Windows Server network share.

    Ergo or Stone

I used Ergo a few years back, can't remember why I stopped (not competitive?). For build quality, as with VeryPc and Novatech, all the models I've ever seen have been rebadged Clevo jobs. Never had any complaints. Lenovo's and Toshiba's have faired worse. For suppliers - VeryPC, Novatech and Stone. Though I might upset Colin and tap up Ergo on my latest laptop requirement instead of Novatech. The VeryPC Thinbooks. Only given them to teachers. Everyone of them loves them and is guarding them jealously! They won't even let me do routine maintenance work in fear I don't give them back or try to replace it with another model! Seriously, the ones we got here - very impressed.
  10. You should be able to cluster with your set up but to be honest I'm not sure how to do it. You may need a Windows based header server to present the iSCSI volumes to the hosts. The theory is - the VHD's are stored on a shared volume - iSCSI - that windows knows is shared between more than one machine - Cluster Shared Volumes. The host accesses the VHD's through a ClusterVolumes folder in their C: drive. You'll need to set up the CSV and then move the VM files into it. It should be possible without having to start from scratch, just a bit of work involved and resetting up Virtual Machines to run from the new location. Clustering will give you automatic live failover. Hyper-V Replica is the easier to set up alternative. Replication is not live so VM's could be out of sync for a number of minutes. Also failover isn't automatic. You need to manually restart the VM on the new host after failover.
  11. What storage are they connected to? It needs to be a Cluster Shared Volume to enable failover clustering on the Hyper-V hosts. An interesting alternative is to look at Hyper-V Replica which is quick and simple to set up and will replicate live VM's between the two servers so if one goes down they can be restarted on the other.
  12. HA! Norfolk: niche interest.... ....Suffolk!

    GTA V Out Today!

40FPS would be out of sync with any monitor refresh I can think of so would cause tearing. Also I'm sure I've read arguments/reports that suggest the human eye can detect movement faster than 100fps depending on circumstances. Truth is the human eye is a marvel of engineering that I'm sure we can't match technically. Anyway, I'm happy with 30fps if it is 100% fixed, for most games.
  14. Apparently 2,343 people like Michael Gove - who knew?
  15. Certainly is an interesting distraction. Apparently R.E.M. fans, like, er, me, are reaching for their pension books and playing scrabble!?! On the other hand Nirvana pretty much nailed me - other than cats, I hate cats!
  16. I call BS. Are Babylon 5 viewers really so different to Firefly viewers? (male, 40-59, C2DE, uber-Right wing). What if you're a fan of both shows, like me? Looks like Star Trek viewers are the same only they've traded their BNP memberships for UKIP. Mmmm.
  17. Your RAS VM needs one NIC connected to the external switch, and one to the private switch. Not both connected to the external. If you have followed the instructions in Marks post above then your VMs (email, dns, dhcp) need their default gateway changing to that of the ip address of the NIC on the RAS server that is connected to the private switch. When following the instructions for the RAS server be sure to make sure you set it up for NAT.
  18. The other option is to use PsExec to run net use remotely on each machine one at a time in a batch file run once on the server.
  19. What version of Windows server are you using? If it's 2008R2 or above you can set mapped drives using group policy preferences. They'll apply with the next group policy refresh without the user having to logoff/logon.
  20. Yeah, I opened it up and cleaned it out but no joy. Didn't try the compound. Read about it on the interweb but decided £120 wasn't too much to pay for a new machine, and less hassle. If it last's as long as the old fat did, a good 7 years, I'll be happy.
  21. I had the original 360 on launch, never had a problem with it. Sold it in '07 for a PS3 because Sony don't do region locking and Rock Band 1 was available in the US a year before it came out over here. I replaced my old fat PS3 with a super slim about 3 months before the PS4 came out (which I also bought day 1) because it suffered the PS3 version of the RROD - the YLOD At the moment it's RockSmith that has me tied to PS3. If my current PS3 ever died I'll replace it immediately just because of that 1 "game". If they brought out a PS4 version, and all songs transferred then I'd a) buy it immediately, and b) won't feel so bad if my PS3 ever died, but would probably still replace it eventually for retro reasons. I actually still have a Dreamcast and an XBox (original). Currently playing through some old C64 and Mega Drive games on emulation
  22. I remember, a few years a go, some PCI graphics cards for Mac that "only" needed firmware flashing for them to work on PC. My guess would be a firmware problem on the card and you're extremely unlikey to find the PC firmware outside of Intel.
  23. Can't say I'm spending too much time playing any of them at the moment, more collecting for the sake of collecting. From what I have spent a few minute on the following, so far, have been the highlights of this year PS4 PS+ for me: Resogun Contrast Outlast (don't normally like first person) Mercenary Kings (I'm a big Metal Slug fan) Spelunky Fez looks interesting but haven't found time to try it yet. Also got Flow thanks to PS+ on PS3 and Crossbuy So far I've bought AC:IV, Watchdogs, and The Golf Club all as digital purchases. The Golf Club is a fantastic game made by the people behind the recent Tiger Woods games, well worth the 30 notes.
  24. I put a 1Tb HDD in my PS4 on launch day. PS+ had it clogged up by around Easter time! No need to download, just purchase. They'll sit in your library waiting to be downloaded when you're ready to play, so long as you keep renewing the annual subscription of course.
  25. If you're a subscriber to PS+ make sure you purchase all the freebies even if you don't download them. Then if you change your mind about a game later you haven't missed your chance. Last months PS4 title, Spelunky, is another good retro style platformer, if you like that sort of thing. A kind of cross between Rick Dangerous and Manic Miner. Had my 3 year old nephew playing it over the weekend he really enjoyed it.
