  1. If you are going to migrate to the server, I've found the active directory migration tool works well, you'll find you have to add it as a component though (which seems silly to me, but hey, it's Microsoft!!) Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School
  2. This school still has, and up-until January were still using Acorns! So if anyone needs 30 BBC 'B's, you know where to come! Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School
  3. I hate the dummies book, I much prefer Sams Learn in 24hrs, but I think that this might be a bit beyond their scope Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School
  4. I work in the Lake District, so the wage is ok for round here, I just drive a hard bargin in interviews! Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School
  5. Heck! Reading this, I beginning to think I'm over paid! I get over £25k, but because I'm term time only, it goes down to £23k. We only have 500 students, and about 100 computer. That said, I am the only ICT technician here, with loads of work, some big projects, and I can only do them whilst the kids are here Perhaps I am worth the money after all.......
  6. We've just bought Macromedia Flash at the school, and I've bought a book that was supposed to teach me Flash. Basically it made flash seems little more than PowerPoint! Does anyone know of a website that can teach me how to expand beyond that, I've had a great idea for a game for the school website, but I need to learn the "programming" aspect of flash. And if there isn't a decent website, can anyone recommend a book? Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School
  7. I agree with the comment about Sophos support, I've called them and they were very good. I know how to hide the whole of the system tray, so that the icons can't be disabled, but that wouldn't tell me when a machine was infected! I'd love to be able to hide VNC though, I remember doing it at another school ages ago, but I've forgotten; if anyone could remind me please...... 8. I'm the same as you Dos_box, the ICT teacher had bought Viglen Classlink years ago, and they we're quoting a huge amount to update the network. In September they employed me (1st ever technician in the school!!!), and I told them where to shove it! Important IT decisions should not be left to teachers, especially ICT teachers!
  9. I think Sophos is pants myself. We have a the same arrangement as Lancs, that all the schools get Sophos for free, and it's not worth that! The remote admin thingy has never worked, and I know it's not just me, because techies from other schools have offered advice & looked at it & can't get it to work. I've had to install it manually on every machine. And it's always stopping because of a virus that keeps attacking the machines that Sophos can't stop. The only plus point is that the lightening bolt greys out, so you know that the machine is infected. Having said that, in Sophos defence, the kids do keep de-activating it, because the ICT teacher told them it was like a VNC type of program (pillock), and they won't believe me when I tell then it's not! 10. Phew! Thanks for that, I was in danger of getting lynched (even though it was only one machine i'd disabled!) Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School
  11. Don't use Viglen, they tie YOUR machines, so when you come to cancelling the contract, you have to nuke the machines, and they charge you for the "tech" support to tell you, that they refuse to help you, if you're moving off their Classlink network!!!!! 12. Help!!! I've installed the software, but how do I remove stations from the groups I put them in; i.e. how do I unblock the internet? Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School
  13. We use Eclipse at my school and I was impressed. A complete backup of the database (books and fingerprints) on two floppies. I hope the people in charge of shafting us all with ID cards are taking note! Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School

    Securus

We've purchased Securus from a guy called Steve Ogden who deals with the North of England: 0870 991 8886 DDI 07830 312880 M It's very clever at what it does, and you soon learn which "violations" to ignore, but the biggest tip I can give you is, don't tell the students you've got it, because our kids have gone nuts, thinking it's too "big brother", which is strange, considering how many of the watch "big brother" and don't see anything wrong with that!! We managed to help a girl who was being bullied, so it's worth using. Stewart Knight Network Manager Appleby Grammar School
