  1. Nice one Russ.... That's the best use of an applemac I've ever seen!!
  2. ...but then a penguin would say that wouldn't they?! You want to try living down here - slightest hint of white and everything grinds to a standstill...
  3. Stick 'em on ebay and get the buyer to send a cheque made out to the school...? Spooky parallel post! Must be the marmite

    Marmite

Try your mature chedder with crunchy peanut butter instead of the marmite for a change - it's an awesome combination...

    Marmite

Love it... Marmite & cucumber sandwiches... Oh and use it in cooking - whever you need a gravy type sauce add a teaspoon of marmite - fan-bloody-tastic and suitable for us veggies... 8)

  8. Another way is to be bloody awkward about repairing any willful damage - just don't replace the mouse for two weeks. This will have the effect of waking staff up to stop things like that happening... ...or network camera (or dummy) in the room with a big poster saying that acts of vandalism and theft will be reported to the police with video evidence - that'll put them off!
  9. Try out the OCE version of Xandros if you're used to M$ - It's designed to be easy for M$ users to switch to... You can install to a machine with an OS already on... just download, burn the ISO to CD, boot from said CD, 4 clicks and you're done! Once installed - just play... still the best way to learn!! http://www.xandros.com
  10. Granted - only any good for file serving, but have an Iomega 200d running Windows Storage Server 2003 that is very reliable and you can use Volume Shadowing to enable them to recover files when they've deleted them by mistake... Have also bought a Buffalo Terastation with 1TB of storage for about £600. Runs a Linux based OS apparantly, but it's not out of it's box yet so can't give an opinion. Might get the chance to bring it online this week so will post if I do...
  11. BTW... did you know that binary code has it's origins in the silk trade? It all came about from the invention of punched cards invented to enable weavers to put complicated patterns into silk.... Just my thought for the day!! So if anyone is bustin ya balls about ICT just say "It's a little known fact but..." and launch into the above... Alternatively start waxing lyrical on the subject of subnetting - that even makes other techs turn white and vanish!!
  12. The original BOFH archive is here http://bofh.ntk.net/Bastard.html and is hilarious reading... much better than the newer stuff imho. Somewhere in there he has an excuse calandar and uses a different one for each day...
  13. Why does it have to be technically correct?!! Tell 'em anything - they won't have the first clue what you're talking about anyway! Sometimes it even comes back round to you via the staffroom which is hilarious. See BOFH archives! "Sunspots" is my favourite and yes it is actually based on scientific fact apparantly... Something about sunspots affecting the atmosphere which can cause memory chips to misbehave!!
  14. Why don't you log on machine one as a local user, make a teacher stand over them while they do the task one by one that machine. They can then save the screen shots to disk or USB and take them away. Then you don't: a. Get a headache b. Compromise your network security for the sake of one task c. Have to do any work other log a machine on! Just a thought! 8)
  15. Having Sharepoint Portal Server installed next week - will add more when I've used it...!
  16. Here we go then... Let's be having your top server names... and to start us off, here's my current set. Zorro - File server. Can't remember why but no, it's not a blade server! Binka - AD PDC named after the fat cat in the cartoon... Carmen - Print server 'cause network printing is a tragedy! Pandora - Email, You open the box and all the evils of the world fly out... Cerberus - Firewall, the three headed dog guarding the entrance to the afterlife! Shrek - Management server, because it's a mess! BadaBing - DC/Backups From my favourite TV show Sopranos - where all the wiseguys go to hang out! A couple more just have boring names - now I've shown you mine so you show me yours...
  17. The main thing to know is that names and pictures should never appear together - Images can be used as long as the child cannot be identified. Unless there are extraordinary reasons, for example one student has sailed round the world and you want to publish press cuttings etc.. then obviously get written permission from the parents first... as said above, the easiest way is to say 'unless we hear from you (parents) we will assume it is okay to publish pictures'...

  23. I have a couple of Acer's that are pretty good although they needed very large RAM upgrades (as DB said the performance was awful). Although I'm hoping they never go wrong so I don't have to deal with the evil spawn that is Acer warranty support... I'd recommend looking at Insight - they have an HP tablet for £829... haven't used one myself but would say that's your safest bet... and a decent price too... http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=HPYATC4202&nbs_search=C%3D102%26S%3D1015%26P%3D%26search_type%3D%26K%3D%26M%3D%26200268v%3D3%253Abucket%26AM%3D
  24. "Unacceptable" - Agreed - hence I didn't renew with Sophos last June and went to Panda instead. Same price, better admin tools, better detection rate including spyware - have had some issues with the latest client but nothing major... oh, and it's clientshield has a much smaller overhead than the sophos client. Sophos got into the education market with some very aggresive pricing about 5 years ago but have since upped the cost by x3, so I believe that LEAs and Schools should look around at other products before blindly sticking with Sophos - my sympathies to those who are shackled by your LEA, but if enough people complain to them maybe they'll think twice...
  25. Within 6 months of arriving here I requested and had issued a credit card. My justification for this is that there are times when it is the only accepted method of payment and gave me more options for getting the best price. A good example of this is ebuyer, who until recently, didn't use payment on account but were often the cheapest supplier... I would definately use this to make donations... @Kevin, it's a shame you've removed that link - because I am stil trialling your Lanview3. If it continues to be developed and some of the small problems are ironed out I will definately extend it's use and when I do would be looking at a 'reasonable donation' of around £2 per client = £400. I think it's imperative we donate to the people who spend thier time developing useful bits of software for us hard-pressed school techs and I personally will be doing more so in the future... How about a BACS transfer to school paypal account which could then be used to donate as and when? After all, we're only talking relatively small amounts...
