  1. Struggling for time to help, below is my code split into a callable function which does work but does rely on some globals (server base dir etc). You should be able to see how permissions are grabbed from the server, cleared down and then the list is built by addAccessRule before the whole list is applied at the end. Exceptions are caught and used to notify the caller what happened. # --------------------------------------------------------------------------- # SetFolderACL # # --------------------------------------------------------------------------- function SetFolderACL { Param ([string]$UserName ) $SetFolderACL = "No Work Done" $tdir = $HomeBase + $UserName Write-Host $tdir try { $acl = Get-Acl $tdir $acl.SetAccessRuleProtection($True, $False) $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule("Everyone","FullControl", "ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit", "None", "Allow") $acl.RemoveAccessRuleAll($rule) Write-Host "Removed" $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule("ICTStaff","Read, ListDirectory, ReadAndExecute", "ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit", "None", "Allow") $acl.AddAccessRule($rule) Write-Host "ICT" $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule("SYSTEM","FullControl", "ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit", "None", "Allow") $acl.AddAccessRule($rule) Write-Host "SYSTEM" $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule("Administrators","FullControl", "ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit", "None", "Allow") $acl.AddAccessRule($rule) Write-Host "Administrators" $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule( $UserName , "Modify", "ContainerInherit, ObjectInherit", "None", "Allow") $acl.AddAccessRule($rule) Write-Host "User" $acct=New-Object System.Security.Principal.NTAccount($NTDomain, "Administrator") $acl.SetOwner($acct) Write-Host "Owner Set" Set-Acl $tdir $acl $SetFolderACL = "$tdir ACL set OK" Write-Host "ACL Set" } catch [system.Object] { $SetFolderACL = "Error setting $tdir ACL" } $SetFolderACL } # ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  2. Seems a little odd that it would spin at all if it was dud. I have noticed some fans respond differently to PWM control (where they switch the power off and on again very fast to control the speed) - with some refusing to operate below 80/90% duty cycle while others will happily go down to 30%. If you have an oscilloscope handy (yea - shirt pocket stuff!) might be worth looking at the signal to the fan to see if it is straight DC or being pulsed.
  3. We just ask them to rate it 4-1 using radio buttons : 4 - Excellent - Couldn't have been better 3 - Very Good - Good in most areas 2 - Adequate - OK; Could have been improved 1 - Unsatisfactory - Never quite resolved as hoped for Option 2 is selected as the default. There is also a comments box. Our strategy to get people to fill it in is to present it as part of the job closure (mostly, users close our tickets, we mark them as 'complete' which sends an email to the user inviting them to close the job if they believe the problem is resolved and part of that invites the feedback). We get relatively few 2's so people do use it.
  4. The upside to that is you then (hopefully) understand how the underlying systems hang together so the myriad of options that FreePBX throw at you will seem a little less intimidating. On the other hand, I ruled out going down that road here because support continuity can become difficult for the school if the expert/s leave. I'd rather pay for 3CX or at worst have some external support we could fall back on.
  5. If you like city builders, there is nothing to beat it IMO.
  6. We have equipment loan sheets for laptops issued to staff which they and we sign on issue and return to record the condition of the equipment. We also have them sign that they have read and understood the AUP.
  7. It is not quite clear to me what is being asked. Do you mean : The top 5 students in the school The top 5 students in each tutor group The top 5 students in each subject class Any may have some difficulties when you get into students with different options. Discounting 3 (it doesn't seem to make sense), I'd start by defining reports for each year which includes all the assessment/exams in scope for that year. So each row would have student details (say name & tutor group) as appropriate and then a bunch of results for the subjects, some of which may be blank where they don't select the subject as an option. I'd spit this into a csv and load it into excel. I'd create a tab which turns the grades into some value [*1], usually weighted A* (or top grades) highest values. So now I can look at each student and I could add up the values and regardless of the actual values (A=100 or A=10), the students will be ranked according to how 'good' their grades were. You can then just sort the data on the total or the tutor group + total and highlight the top 5 for each group. [*1] I'd have the first tab as the CSV data and the second tab would just mirror that but the cells for each result would be a lookup to turn the grade into a value.

    Batch Scripts

Ideas - use powershell, either entirely or just to do the notifications.
  9. I treated myself to a Les Paul for my 50th birthday and it is almost entirely responsible for my renewed enthusiasm to actually pick up a guitar and play it. There is a luthier quite local and at some point that and my acoustic (a Dean thing) will visit. I fear he will ask things like "what style do you like to play" etc and I'll just have to mutter incomprehensible barely ignorant nonsense!
  10. These are the replacement drives? If so, I'd speak to whoever your supplier is about that. I try to be a little careful with server discs in terms of sourcing them from suppliers we know and have a continuing relationship with but we have never had any issues with manufacturer warranty. Drives failing at the same time might indicate : environmental problems, manufacturing/design issues or dodgy firmware. The former would be my suspect if they are running so hot but it could be a combination of the first two (elevated block failure can then cause a lot of seek head movement essentially due to fragmentation and multiple retries as blocks fail).
  11. Well if it is true : They need to be shot.
  12. Hosts? I use Ubuntu server edition as a LAMPS base with wordpress. Hosted on a reasonable spec VM (6GB, 4CPU) which is a little over spec for it's needs. Overall, other than the initial tuning (out of the box Apache settings were not beefy enough), It has been extremely reliable.
  13. One thing to look out for is the load on the webserver and the configuration that might be required to support that. We do host our website internally and as a result I now know a lot more about Apache configuration!
  14. Circle of fiths was/is amazingly revelatory. It's somehow easier to grasp on the guitar than piano because of the way chord shapes hold as they move around the neck (or vary in a predictable CAGED way). I did a little spreadsheet where I can select a key and chord/scale type which then highlights all the notes on the frets. It isn't very pretty but the process of building it was very helpful in advancing my understanding of the theory. Any other non software/hardware ideas much appreciated!
  15. Any recommendations (hardware/where to start)? Drums isn't something I'd considered but it makes a lot of sense. Having confidence with rhythm and timing mitigates the odd bum note (so won't save me!). Is latency is not an issue? Any paticular FX that are must haves? I did buy a Line6 pocket pod last year - mostly as a headphone amp, but I don't use it much. Thanks. Never heard of that but it looks very interesting. My goal is just to be able to amuse myself for a few hours with a guitar; I can make up tunes in my head and I'd like to be able to hear them in my head and be able to translate that to playing them and writing them down. I do have a bet on with some friends that I will complete Grade 1 - Rock School by the end of the year or forfit £100 to the charity of their choice. I'm finding that very very very dull going.
  16. I'm trying to teach myself Guitar & also some music theory and competency in reading both tab and staff. I've pretty much stuck to books and video's so far but have now started to play around with Musescore as a way to work with tab and staff other than just passively reading them. I then think a small keyboard would be the thing to have for "data entry" and possibly even something that might do guitar to midi, which probably means an ADC that can handle pick-ups and microphones that would defeat a standard soundcard. All of which have left me feeling like I'm standing at the top of a slippery slope; a possibly very expensive slippery slope. So my question for those who do this stuff as a hobby or even professionally : what are your must have pieces of software/hardware that have particularly helped you enjoy your playing and make progress and why?
  17. It is mostly about risk. How do temperatures affect reliability and what are the consequences if temperatures are a factor in equipment failure. So Page 27 suggests that your chance of a server failure at 30 deg C is 1.42% compared to my servers running @ 20deg C which are at 1%. So actual chance of failure should still be relatively low but does increase as a function of temperature. Risk calculation is usually a product of probability *and* the consequences - what actually happens if something does break. Usually with our kind of infrastructure, failure is a matter of cost (rather than say lives) - how much does it cost if we are without a server for the time it takes to replace it? IMO this is quite difficult in a school. Costs tend to be low or are difficult to quantify (in a business getting a cost is relatively straightforward). We are still relatively good at dealing with/absorbing disruption but prolonged disruption will be unwelcome, with prolonged anything longer than a day or two. So it might be that elevated temps are not a hugely substantially elevated risk (compared to lower temps) unless you have very poor DR plans for hardware failure or perhaps you are invalidating the next day warranty cover because of the environment (which would be a poor DR plan for server failure!).
  18. Very brave. Are you going big bang for migrations or have the nightmares of core integrator finally diminished and no longer trouble you ;-)?
  19. Non relational databases have been around longer than the relational model. What you pick depends on your application (and to some degree the availability of developers who are skilled both in the technology and the application domain) and relational model for known structured data up to a few hundred billion records (on relatively modest hardware) should still be a very very sound choice.
  20. You need to create the account and then move it to the target OU. Some sample code here.
  21. And to enumerate users in an OU should be something like : $membersInGroup = Get-ADUser -SearchBase “OU=Staff,OU=Users, dc=myschool,dc=org,dc=uk” -Filter * -ResultSetSize 5000 | Select SamAccountName Which you could use in place of the first line in @sparkeh 's code (previous warnings apply!).

    Surface 4

I've had a surface pro 2 since 2014. My first one had to be replaced which was relatively quick and painless and since then no issues. I don't use the pen (much improved since then I believe) but the overall build quality, battery life etc is IMO first rate. It is the device I throw into my bag when I travel and given that it rattles around in a rucksack, it is holding up well. Another surface will be top of the list when I need to replace it - assuming they still make them by that time.
  23. My usual approach to jobs is to look at the spec and then to tailor my CV and cover letter so that I can best show how my skills and experience match the role rather than bore anyone with stuff that is likely of no interest to them. I'm unlikely to put that effort in, unless I can see that the job meets my criteria. Without a more precise location than "north london", my default assumption is simply that it is not. You are welcome to PM me the location but my point is really that if you are still looking for quality candidates, missing vital information from the advert reduces your potential pool of those people. Up to you I guess.
  24. Before it's time in just so many ways.
  25. Could you be a bit more precise than "North London"?
