I normally fix this little problem by removing the mass storage device driver for the particular drive, then i unplug it and restart the machine followed by reinserting the drive. its normally to do with the user not safely removing the drive therefore corrupting the driver signiture file for that particular device. quick question, have you tried another data stick?

How old is your back up drive? there are alot of moving parts in the drives. Correct me if im wrong but an adverage drive's life time is about 4-5 year.

Tell them to buy a genuin version of XP. Hardly breaks the bank. and If it is def a genuin version you will need to get on to microsoft.
