The problems with apprenticeships, is many (but not all) have age limits on them, and especially in todays climate they more often will take a 16-20 year old than someone most people class as an adult. But definately go for it. I've never studied IT till recently in any respect, and I've worked my way up over the last 8-9 years. When I started I was earning £8k per year and I now sit comfortably about £20k per year. The more time spent in IT, the more you realise. It's not what you know or what you learn or what you study. It's how you handle and analyse situations and problems. A clear thinker with a smattering of common sense will go far in IT, and you'll find you'll learn what you need to know as you go along in it; you only gain experience by doing it. Every IT course I've seen, and the few I've tried, never seem to live in what anyone would call the real world. They invariably teach you somethings you don't need to know, not enough time on the things you do, and concentrate more on bespoke and linear options, which in my experience, nothing in IT is ever as straight forward as it seems. Go for anything and everything, live it up, and make sure you enjoy it on some level. If your not enjoying it once you average out the good days with the bad, your in the wrong job!

There's always been a limit to 5 machines with itunes per account, but up till now there's never been a limit on number of devices you could download the apps to. The question is wheither it's enforced like the 5 itunes PC's per account is, or wheither it's a guideline Apple expect you to adhere to. There's also the question of wheither this covers existing purchases or just future ones. And lastly, if they are making these stipulations about home/personal/non-commercial use, then the stupid buggers really need to fix their business support, and fix it like 3 years ago, because they will NEVER break that market if they continue to make it a legal minefield to work with. I am now looking at running 5 or more seperate Itunes accounts, and having to buy these apps 4 more times at significant cost to the school, plus I will need to buy an Apple MAC with the Server OS installed just to manage these devices without wanting to kill myself, and even with that I'm technically breaking Apple's TOC's because of how the devices can/may be used. And I won't get started on the complete lack of support for managing multiple devices, as I'll only hate myself even more for agreeing to work with these rubbish in the first place.

I like the look of it, but wheither it will replace the current kindle depends heavily on what it's like for reading books on it. You have to meet your core need before you can go off to meet extra ones like internet and movies.

I went to update Itunes yesterday, and noticed they have updated the TOC's. Hidden a little way down, there is now a restriction on the number of devices you can download your apps to (10 including up to 5 authorised computers). iTUNES STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS Also to note, the UK TOC's state: So anyone using itunes for business in the UK is actually breaking the TOC's. Oh isn't Apple fun!

I'd love to know how they make non alcoholic drinks tbh. Just about every drink made from organic material contains some level of alcohol, it's unavoidable when you have large amounts of Hydrocarbons in things made up mostly of water...

Might not be too bad. Companies like this tend to do well around signature releases and Xmas. The next 3 months see's a new CoD, new BF, and several other large releases, and Game say they've got a new release set for every week of the next 2-3 months. A short term investment might pay off, but long term these guys are going down.

Without kids, it's about 25 degree's in this classroom. With kids, that temp rises to 30+. 16 computers, 20 people and no air con isn't fun.

I frequently go about life thinking "I really wish I could pod that ****" Thankfully I don't have a problem distinguishing my shooting games from real life. In real life if I was going to Shoot you in the head, I wouldn't be standing up, I wouldn't bunny hop, I'd have a scope with a proper variable zoom, I'd have a proper Bi-Pod to rest it on, and I wouldn't be wearing desert camo gear in the snow.

I used Joomla for my beta site (which is internal only at the moment, as all the content needs updating) I've noticed over time that wordpress sites, although they CAN be done well, are generally managed by people with low web-design skills, and can be done by them, and as such sometimes end up with cluttered sites, messy menu's etc. Joomla I think has more customisability and control, BUT requires more knowledge to get the advanced features working. I'll admit though, I haven't really played with Wordpress. Once I'd built one site in Joomla, I really didn't feel like building another one just to see what it looked like in a slightly different flavour.

For me, I prefer Firefox because of it's addon's. The majority are pointless fluff for people with gadget addictions. But for a web designer IT geek I love my Yoono bar for twitter/FB/G+, the easy download buttons on flash video's, and Firebug has saved me hours/days of time fighting with errant website codes, and the saved password options for me are a blessing. I also like the recent addition of skinning, as I don't normally like bright white windows etc, and I love my dark black/grey menu bars, rather than annoying pointless transparency on IE9. If I wanted to see a 5mm strip of blurry background I'd strap beer bottles to my eyes.

Where did you find that for £10? I can barely buy a standard case or cover for an ipad for £10, let alone one with a bluetooth keyboard built in!

Grmbl, try doing this for 40 of the bl***y things.... -Fix Apple TV; put a damned option for Proxies in it please. I want to buy lots of them, but they are expensive bricks as long as I can't connect them to the internet because Apple don't want me to. Apple TV: Connections through proxy servers are not supported -Enterprise solutions for i devices; I want to create and save a layout for all my devices (same folders with same apps in) but at the same time, these are also personal devices, with different files, and some customised apps/preferences. Let me save my layout, and apply that layout to other devices without doing a "Backup" that wipes the whole content of the device and starts again. -Account-based parental controls; what's the damned point in a device where if you set parental control options on the PC, they don't apply to the device that can download the same things from the same app store. -Do what every single other phone and mobile device manufacturer on the planet has done, and use a standard USB connector, not your own propriatary one ffs. All other devices can share an identical charger/connector, why the hell can't you? /rant

IE is awful for continuous updates, it must need a new fix or similar twice a week, and after you've patched your 1000th "Patch" in a year the browser you started with is nothing like what you've got now. So the only real difference is Firefox likes to make visual improvements more frequently, and as such increase the release number more rapidly, instead of having Version 8.7.5.2.4.2 rc32 SP12

Sorry for minor hijack/derailment, but anyone recommend a good in-car holder for a phone (Samsung Galaxy S, not the new S2 one, last year's one). Prefer windscreen mount, as my car doesn't have a properly flat surface to mount on the dash. I had a great one, that some helpful thieves stole last year, but I can't buy that one anymore, and half the ones i've seen recently are either for BB's, Iphones, or generic rubbish.

Would the Lite version come with only the gospels and psalms?

I suggest putting some honous on the kids themselves, as well as the teachers. Make it clear to the staff, that if they do not keep their class under control then the laptops will get broken, and it will take time and money to repair them; time and money that would normally be spent making their lives and that of the students better. And it make clear to the students: that if they find something damaged/broken with a laptop, to report it at THE BEGINNING of the lesson/when they get it. This way the people who keep causing the damage can be caught, or at least the class can be narrowed down. This should work relatively well, because students wont take the blaim for something they didn't do, and teachers are never going to visually inspect every single machine every single time they use them.

If anything it'll increase in use rapidly. A lot of quango's have gone that schools used to buy into for random services, many of which provided these technical things for a low cost. Like doing media work, loaning ipads/apple's camera gear. But the cost of most of these items has come down considerably, and the price for the managed services are going up and up. I don't have exact figures, but a service we used last year went up by about 8 times the cost, and the primary use was X weeks of hiring a set of tech equipment. The price they are now charging for the same X hiring period is so high, I can buy the physical hardware for less cost than 1 year's service costs. So what is being set up here is school partnerships, so School X buys equipment 1, School Y buys equipment 2 etc etc, and the stuff is shared equally between them according to use.

Bump again, I really could do with an answer on this. I can't seem to confirm or deny proxy workings on them yet.

These devices, not just ipads but all the other varieties have the ability to transform our ways of thinking and working. Will they ever replace some established methods? Possibly not, only time will tell. But you can't find out unless you try it first. I have personally just made a change in my place. I showed the HT an alternative to the IWB+Projector setup, which will work out in the region of £1000 cheaper with more flexibility, using large sized TV's, and we're looking into Tablet solutions for the interactivity portion, likely Apple TV and ipad, since I've got 40 Ipads 1s in the school now. Maybe the current Ipads aren't the ultimate answer, and maybe the system they are using isn't the best for paying/acquiring them. But revolutionary changes start somewhere. You have to make mistakes before you can learn from them, and regardless of the views, technology is here to stay, and our use of it within education will only increase.
