If I've understood you correctly, that the techs would like a single SIMS Deployment Server (SDS), then that doesn't make sense to me. SDS is not just about pushing the SIMS application to a device, it also handles Database patches and upgrades, and each school must have an agreement with a SIMS Support Unit to receive the appropriate packages, which could actually be different for each school. As DJ-1701 pointed out, it makes more sense to RDP to the SDS for each school to handle the appropriate tasks. If what you're asking is can the SIMS application be deployed more efficiently from a single deployment platform, then yes it can, but that will depend on communication between the two networks. Do you know if they already use a particular RMM or Software Deployment platform for other things?

Here's the command I use... wlsetup-all.exe /AppSelect:MovieMaker /NOToolbarCEIP /NOhomepage /noceip /nolaunch /NOMU /nosearch /silent I rarely install WMM anymore, but Video Editor causes us a few headaches with the 'special' way it has to work (project files...)

As others have said, time is very important and they need to be in sync. Further to the good stuff above, I'd also concentrate on getting DNS in order - make sure at the very least you have the corresponding static records (forwards and reverse) for key servers, such as DC01 and 2. Make sure they are announcing changes to each other (depends on how you have it configured). Any other server roles involved here? DHCP?? What are the static IP settings on each server's NIC - check the DNS settings of each NIC, they should have static addresses and the primary DNS of each server should point to the other one (again, this depends on your setup but I suspect this is the case) Backup all the core Event logs!! Flush them out and then keep an eye on new events.

Thanks, Arthur, that's a good point. Also, SIMS, and Tucasi SCOPay, don't like it when The Ancient One (IE11) is missing - fails to open some reports...

That's likely your best option. Remove-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Browser.InternetExplorer~~~~0.0.11.0 The following code will show you the correct name if the above is incorrect. Get-WindowsCapability -Online | Where-Object { $_.State -like "Installed" } | Select-Object -ExpandProperty Name

Server Freeze, ESENT Event ID 508, 510 and 533 on Server 2012
mrwoberts replied to naz1's topic in Windows Server 2012
Stop the Windows Update service and BITS service, then rename the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to be C:\Windows\--SoftwareDistribution Start the Windows Update service and check to see that a new SoftwareDistribution is created. This code needs to be run in an Elevated Command Prompt. net stop wuauserv net stop bits rename "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" --SoftwareDistribution net start bits net start wuauserv -
One other way of doing this, although definitely not a long-term solution, is to add entries to the clients' HOSTS file in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc folder. Add entries for all important netbios names and FQDN with their matching IP address. Warning: Make a note that you've done this otherwise it could come back to bite you if any of those IP addresses change because you're essentially overriding your domain DNS lookups !!

The changes to the Firewall rule for the Solus agent to work over a VPN was simply to apply the rule to Domain, Private, and Public network profiles. You can apply a firewall GPO in different ways but you get the idea that it needs to be applied to all three types of Network Profiles I'm sure you can work it out.

When configuring the Windows VPN connection, we add the domain DNS suffix Run 'rasphone' (I just prefer to use this to configure VPN settings) VPN Properties >> Networking >> IPv4 Properties >> Advanced >> DNS >> 'DNS Suffix for this connection:' Add your domain suffix here.

A few other things to note... How does the remote client authenticate? Radius? AD Direct? Separate VPN Login? Can the remote client access the Solus Update repository through a normal Explorer/Command line route? Solus now updates through our VPN but we had to do the following... When the user connects their VPN, they run a very simple script to cache login credentials to the SIMS server shares, just by insisting on using their current login (felt weird, but it worked). When the user joins the device to their home network, we had to adapt our Solus Agent Firewall rules to allow over Private/Public, which is what their laptop would end up in when at home. For the couple of devices that still wouldn't play ball, they just needed to join the school wifi (often sat in the car park) and it updated normally.

[sims] Autumn release bug can you test on your system
mrwoberts replied to round2it's topic in MIS Systems
I was recently emailed a notice to say that Sims Autumn 2020 Consolidated Workstation Patch 1 resolves this exact issue. Is that patch available to you? EDIT: Apologies, I just reread that email and although I hope it will fix the problem, it mentions more specifically about fixing the searching contacts from the home page. -

Couple of things you could do... - install the 'I don't care about cookies' extension LINK - if you use an ad-blocker, add the following code to the custom block list www.google.co.uk###lb www.google.com###lb www.google.com##:root:style(overflow-y: visible !important;) www.google.co.uk##:root:style(overflow-y: visible !important;) -

Troubleshooting ideas... - Try different browsers - Try a device that is physically bypassing the filter (direct connection, if possible) - Any browser plugins? Disable them. - Try a mobile phone, attached to your wifi. Same issue? With all of the above, I'm really trying to help to see where the fault is, browser, filter, ISP... -

Sophos XG fails SWGfl Filter Test
mrwoberts replied to lafleur1977's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Didn't know about that test-filtering link, thanks for that Interestingly, I don't see the offensive language test, no matter which target group I select. -
Recently replaced a few switches, at different sites, with the UniFi switches 48port and 24 port (POE), partly because we are using UniFi APs... Totally regretting it now. We barely had any issues with the very old Netgear Prosafe ones we ripped out and since the UniFi switches have been installed we've had various network issues. Quite possibly due to the consistently buggy software/controller stuff that UniFi send out the door - that's another story. They might be cheaper, but after this experience I would struggle to recommend them to anyone. "If it ain't broke... don't break it."

Fair point, it has been pretty much the B/V series of Lenovo I've come to loath. Saying that though, the Thinkpad prices are a bit higher than a similar spec Dell, and I'm definitely not a fan of the Thinkpad mouse layout. But fair point, business class range will generally yield happier results. Anyone have experience with Lenovo customer service?? I'd say that would be quite an important factor to consider also.
-
Avoid Lenovo! Speaking from experience with different gen lenovo devices. I've had so many hardware faults with these that I wouldn't even recommend them to someone I didn't like. Avoid, avoid, avoid. Acer let me down big time. We buy next business day warranties with them and they basically failed to honour it. Customer Support is just awful. Dell have always been rock solid for me. Excellent support, they've even honoured a warranty after it had expired. Very easy to fix/upgrade, business class range often have removable inspection panels. My first choice now. We always buy 3-year NBD warranties for staff laptops. HP, whilst not my first choice, have also been fairly good - just annoying to self-service and I end up having to remove the majority of casing to fix/upgrade. Toshiba, Fujitsu - mixed experience with these, but on the whole okay. I so wish Samsung were still making laptops, I've got laptops that are nearly 10 years old and still going strong.

Windows 10 1909 log in times to server 2019 seems slow
mrwoberts replied to ictgoodpractice's topic in Windows 10
Are the 2nd, 3rd... login times (for the same user) just as slow? What are the file transfer speeds like between client and Server? Try various file sizes, but particularly many small files, or use a good IO benchmarking app What is the network activity during the login process? - On the server NIC and the client NIC (you'll need to check stats on the WiFi Controller) Ideas... Scrub the existing user profile on the device, try the login again (over the air) Same slowness? Scrub the existing user profile on the device, connect the copper and try the login again. Same slowness? Try a Windows 7 client. Try a Windows 10 LTSC client. Backup Server NIC settings and try some of the changes mentioned in this post... LINK -
Would Security Groups be more helpful in this context, and what groups are set at the root level at the moment? For example, granting the group 'TheRWcrew' permission to the root is easier in the long-term than adding/removing individual users. I know that doesn't easily solve your problem now, so I guess we go back to find out what groups already have root folder permissions.

Hi Luke In answer to your question... I've recently purchased that model, with the 256GB - the users didn't need the 512. In fact, depending on the usage, you could potentially opt for a 16GB RAM with the 256GB if that works any better. For the disk space, I generally set aside 10% of space for over-provisioning. So my 256 disks become roughly 220, and 512 becomes 450. I can say without a doubt that they are fast and very easy to configure. I like the fact that the Prodesk model has an HP driver pack, so very easy to add to your deployment tasks, or just to install all up-to-date drivers in one go. These have replicated BIOS setup options, so you can configure your settings on one, back up those settings, then import those on the remaining units - saves a bit of time. No issues currently. I'm using 1909 EDU version. EDIT: Just an extra comment. The units I purchased had VGA and DP outputs onboard. Therefore you'd need an add-in graphics card for HDMI or DVI.

Just had a look into this and the flags settings are stored in a file 'Local State" That file is kept in the users' "%localAppdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data" folder. It's a json file. However, the part you need is typically near the beginning, with a common section preceding it (for patter matching...) {"browser":{"enabled_labs_experiments":[ the quoted parts following that section are flags. You'll have to play around with the flags you set and see what changes in that file. Chrome has to be closed before you change that file manually.

Hi Matthew, could you indicate what the two settings are. Are you using the latest Chrome GPO templates?

Surface Pro 7 Tablets - Reliability and BSOD issues
mrwoberts replied to superatticman's topic in Hardware
Purchased one for the head just a couple of months back. I personally wasn't overly impressed with it, especially for the £ 900+ price tag. It kind of needs the pen to add the wow factor, but that just overstretched our budget. Interestingly we bought 13inch Dell Latitudes for the other SLTs and they absolutely love them. They were roughly £ 600 each. Given the choice, I would buy the Latitudes any day. My opinion is if you want a tablet, go for the iPad, if you want a decent 12-13 inch Laptop, go for the Dell Latitudes. -
Hmmm, that looks interesting. What are your initial thoughts?? Anything changed recently?? Permissions, Group Policies... Has the user any input into what they think might have caused this? Anything unusual on their device before this issue started?
