Sounds like progress :-) Did you set the connect.ini to be redirected - so that the client connect.ini file simply points to a centralised connect.ini file?? If not, one good thing about doing that is you can very quickly redirect users between the databases you set in the central connect.ini file, also you can prevent anyone from logging into SIMS by simply removing the file (for maintenance reasons...)

You're welcome There are two things at play, as far as I can see. #1) The Database the Solus DS knows about, and therefore updates. I believe the connect.ini (if unchanged by my next point) is automatically generated by this info #2) The (Custom) Workstation ini files specified in the Environment settings Let's say you have two instances of SQL Server, SIMS2012 (old), and SIMS2016 (new). You've migrated the databases from 2012 to 2016 I think there are two problems now existing. P#1) I'm thinking that Solus still has pointers to the 2012 instance, with no mention of the 2016?? P#2) If the above is true, and if you've not modified the connect.ini file mentioned above, then Solus would continue to push out a connect.ini file that listed the old 2012 instance. To solve P#2, you need to customise the settings in connect.ini to point to your new 2016 instance, with a FQDN for the server, then change the SOLUS settings similar to this... To solve P#1, you need to add the new Server instance and Database settings in the appropriate Target tabs. I haven't tried having two database in there, but it allows you to add a second so I imagine it will work. However, might be better to remove the 2012 then add the 2016, assuming you're happy with the migration. For my own personal interest in this solution I'd like to be able to solve the reason of why the solus3_deployment_server db remains under the 2012 instance and wasn't moved to the 2016. Once you've entered the references to the 2012 instance in the (Settings, SOLUS3, Solus) section, it wouldn't allow me to point that to the 2016\solus db that I'd made a copy of.

Fantastic. Regarding the connect.ini problem, that can typically be resolved by redirecting to a centralised connect.ini, on a network share (I put mine in simshare for simplicity). This is specified in the Environment >> Configure Workstations section. You would then push that out, through Solus3, requesting it to overwrite local copies - assuming there's nothing unique about any users' settings... Something else I also did, was specify the FQDN of the server within the connect.ini file. This resolved an issue for me when connecting through VPN.

When you open SolusDS, is the DB still running on the old 2012 instance, or have you managed to migrate that over to 2016? Edit: To clarify, is this your current setup (post migration) SIMS2012 - solus SIMS2016 - sims, ccfms

Had the exact same problem a while ago. I even posted a thread on here (that I can't find now), asking how I transfer the SOLUS db over. After manually copying the db over the Deployment software would simply not load - demanding that it couldn't connect to the 'old' db. Trawled through configuration files for Solus and I came to the conclusion that it must be coded somewhere that I can't edit. Gave up and just left the old DB running until I could be bother recreating a new one - which I still haven't done. I'd personally love to know the answer to this - it's kept me awake at night for the past four years

Ah, thanks for that. I too will be using the Express version. I vaguely remember that the Capita tool adjusts the instance settings to better handle a SIMS db - not sure what settings, but I remember reading about it somewhere. Possibly memory related??

Out of interest, are you using the latest migration tool from MyCapita Downloads section - they have a 2016 migration tool. I'm considering this as a summer project, so I'm interested in your mileage with this one.

Movie Maker (MM) falls in to the category of simple yet intuitive, with enough features to create interesting video creations with just a few clicks. I'm guessing MM won't be able to handle (import) videos with more recent encoding formats, but it will satisfy my teachers for another year at least. :lightbulb: Just had an idea of creating a thread somewhere on EduGeek that lists what software admins deploy to their devices - it would be more than interesting to hear about other software that may just add a wow factor to the desktop experience.

Once extracted, you're only really interested in the contents of the MSI folder. Personally, I wouldn't do that. It makes more sense to me to create a dns-superhero user, add them to the DNSAdmin group and use those details instead. It's just another place you don't have to remember to change each time you change your DA password, which by the way, may well be the reason. Apologies, I meant to say the owner of the stuck records. Mine are typically set to my dns-superhero, or SYSTEM. Is the Update associated pointer option ticked on the stuck records. Also, do you have the 'Enabled automatic scavenging of stale records' enabled? It's in the properties windows (advanced tab), of the root of the DNS tree. Failing this, it could be something odd happening from the client side - are these particular devices behaving normally?

Have you specified a member of the dnsadmin group to update the DNS (this is found in the advanced tab). If it has been working you may decide this isn't strictly necessary. Next you'd want to check who is the owner of the forward and reverse records that are stuck - also check the root permissions (of the Forward, and Reverse folder) to ensure inheritance. Again, you may not have changed these but it's worth double checking.

Definitely a Zen fan. Interestingly I called them just yesterday when we were having issues with our connection - dropped packets... I tried 'everything' before calling them. I was speaking to a technician within a minute of calling them. Very helpful, patient and even though I had done some of the things he asked me to do, I thought it's not his fault. They monitored my connection whilst we did various tests and in the end it turned out to be our UTM having a funny 5 minutes. I had restarted the blessed thing (twice) but for whatever reason it turned out to be that. I apologised for wasting their time but they were excellent. They even called me the following day to ask if they could stop the monitoring as the connection seemed fine.

You're quite right, Dave, my apologies. I should have tried it myself before suggesting that. I'm just seeing if I can pass set a targetdir property of the extracted MSI. I'll report back soon.

3s-gtech solution is probably your best bet, and you'll have to block the command prompt/powershell to avoid access through that door. For those who are determined/curious, there are lots of other ways they could still access it - 7-zip portable is just one route. If there are sensitive things within those folders, then now is a good time to rethink what you keep in there.

To clarify, are you wanting to stop workgroup devices (not domain joined), or any domain joined device? Because, for domain joined devices, it is essential that they are able to access those folders.

Is the DC now in a healthy state, or are you suggesting something is wrong with the DC - apart from an old admin password? It's common for a workstation to lose the trust relationship with a DC that has been restored from an old backup, but it should be relatively simple to fix. Disjoin/Rejoin the domain from the workstation - this creates a new computer (service account) password. How many workstations are affected?

Was going to try the file for you, on 1803, but the download link needs registration. Do you have the same office updates on all these pcs that are failing? Or, put another way, which office updates does the 1609 OS have that the later ones don't??

Dave You have a few things to choose here. First, and perhaps more in keeping with what you're asking, is to download the EXE from the normal location HERE Then open that EXE with 7zip and you'll see the MSI within a subfolder, plus it's associated content. I personally would not be so concerned with the lack of support of IE, in fact I kind of welcome it. Chrome, or Firefox, et al, is perfectly capable of running Scratch online. To resolve the issue of the forced downloading the updated version, you'll need to modify the application.xml file (found in META-INF\AIR\application.xml) Change the versionNumber tag to 999, which overrules even the most recent version number being offered... The above can be achieved through Group Policy. Does that help?
