I've looked into CESG approved degaussers but they're expensive. Same goes for industrial shredders. I don't mean this to sound rude, but there have been quite a few 'you should do such and such' replies which is good, but I am genuinely curious as to what other schools actually do with their old tapes and HDDs?

We have 60-70 LTO2 tapes to get rid of. I'm just curious as to how you all securely erase your old backup tapes?

Hehe, not sure about that. I just thought it might be useful for someone in a similar position. I don't think I ever really had a problem with the chip pcs until I got these XPe machines. They're so easy to configure exactly as you want, and being windows registry to sort it all out, it's really customisable. I particularly like the enhanced write filter that gives you a fresh image every time you boot. It's given me ideas to try other things out and might put some in as whiteboard machines or as community Internet access machines.

It looks similar to what we did with our ChipPCs. Doing it with poe jack pcs or some integrated monitors would look pretty smart too.

Hi, I know this thread is a bit old now, but hopefully this will help someone else using an XPe thin client. We've had these Samsung 930XT thin clients in for a little while now and are finding them really good. Our other thin clients are ChipPC XtremePCs and JackPCs. The Samsung units are a hundred times better in a lot of ways! To fix the problems the OP was having, I set the shell to 'mstsc.exe c:\rdp.rdp'. This brought up several problems. The first was that the RDP connection would ask for credentials before it would try and find the terminal server. To fix this I used Minlogon which made the thin client auto-login and would allow the custom shell to restart. At this point you need to make sure that you have the Ctrl-Alt-Del fix (attached) installed so that you can use the task manager to make changes to your build if you need to (to change the network name after deployment for instance). Once all of the settings are applied and written to the EWF, the terminal can be imaged and ghosted to the others in next to no time. The only problem this leaves, which I haven't been able to fix, is that the shell starts too quickly for the NIC to have initialised properly. This means that there will be a connection error on the first attempt (and subsequent attempts within the first ~20 seconds). After that though, it's fine and will just keep reconnecting once it's timed out. My thin clients were supplied by Axess Systems who were very helpful and absolutely smashed the prices of all the competition. I would definitly recommend them. Have you already posted your CV online? I'm sure that if anyone saw something and knew it was well matched to your CV that they'd let you know.

I was just wondering how some of you guys go about recording what equipment needs servicing and when? Do you have a system of preventative maintenence or do you just say go and clean out all of the filters every october etc.? I'd like to do something simple but effective to manage it. I've just started using spiceworks if that helps at all, although I have no idea how to use the inventory section effectivly. Cheers, gsk

I've only been using 7 for a few days, but i've started to notice (and it's started to irritate me) that when I try and click on an application on the taskbar, it will give me a preview (most of the time) but when I click on it, the preview box disapears and i go back to the previous window! Am I doing it wrong or is it a bug? I'm running the RC released on 3rd Sep. I have the TechNet Plus version sitting on the server ready to go if needs be, but I just wondered what the cause was? gsk

We have a full wireless system in operation at the moment, using Netgear WG302 APs and it's pretty reliable and reasonably fast. It has niggles but we need to keep it ticking along for another year or two. We are deploying a few new sets of laptops which come with draft n wireless cards. Would it be worthwhile to buy a draft n access point so that it can be plugged in when the laptops are put in a room for a lesson? If so, what business class access points do you guys reccommend? What are the pro's and con's of doing this? Thanks, gsk

Hi All, The head has asked us to investigate something he saw sometime back and liked the look of. All the info we have is: It used PDAs with GPS The group apparantly went onto the school field and simulated a "pack of lions in the savanna" He doesn't know what software was used, and we haven't been able to get a more detailed decription about the whole thing. I've downloaded and started playing with mscape, but I can't get it to do anything useful and can't find any resources or forums to help. I have set up a mediascape and it tests okay on the computer and works okay on the PDA when you simulate your position, but I can't get it to work on location alone. If anyone has any info or ideas on how I can make this work, I'd be very grateful. Thanks, gsk

Hi All, I've done a quick search, and the threads I've found are a little different to what we're looking at and I have some specific questions too. Firstly, can you reccommend an article that shows how to add a mac to a windows domain? Can you get adm or admx templates to add to AD to enforce policies on Macs? Can you get/create logon scripts to define the mapped network drives other than the home directory? We use Ghost 8 to image the PCs but can this be used to image Macs as well? And finally, I've heard that you can install windows on the intel based Macs, is that true and can you dual boot? Thanks very much for any help.

I had 'ping wpad' working yesterday but then obviously got the wrong end of the stick when I was looking on the net further, because I changed it so that http://wpad.intranet.curriculum.school.co.uk/wpad.dat resolved properly. I still couldn't get IE to pick it up though. I've been using ethereal today to have a look at the traffic the machine is sending out when I open IE. When i trie dto use the auto configure script using the .pac method it did the GET function but still didn't work and I can't see why. When i've had auto-detect proxy settings enabled, it didn't do any DHCP inform stuff, or any GET functions or anything containing WPAD, so I don't know what's happening there either.

I'm going to try and set this out as logically as I can because I've been working on it for some hours now... I want to implement WPAD so that teachers can use their local user account both on our network and have internet access and also when they get home without having to do anything. At the moment, the proxy settings are defined in the profile and through GPO meaning they have to untick the 'use proxy server' box in LAN settings each time they want to use the net at home and then re-tick it when they want to use it at work. Background info: Windows Server 2003 R2 with IIS 6 as the main intranet server. computer name= intranet Server2 has Windows Server 2003 R2 installed DNS hosted on 'server2' DHCP hosted on 'server2' External proxy: proxy.embc.uk.com:80 I'm using IE7 to do the bulk of the testing, and will be using IE7, IE8, Firefox and Netscape once it's done. We've had a bill through today from Getty Images, who have seen some images on our website that they believe are their copyright. They are demanding a settlement of #800 per image. The images were put on by our previous web dev. The new web dev didn't have any records to refer to, to verify the copyright permission of the images, so he's in a bit of a tight situation really. The boss has contacted the previous web dev and she says the she 'always kept copyright in mind' but didn't keep any record of any permission obtained. What would be your next course of action? Has anyone experienced anything like this before?
