  1. Hi All, I was wondering if there were any of these about and if there were any in particular that were highly regarded? I'd like to migrate to a vanilla network and I'm not convinced that the RM Virus Protect will work on a vanilla network. I don't particularly like the product itself either really.
  2. Thank you for the offer. I spent some time last week on a station getting the removal of the local RM stuff right and that seems to be working well (using the wmic tool in a batch file if anyones interested). I just had a problem with running logon scripts as RM had disabled the command prompt (I'm using using .bat logon scripts from 'back in the day'!) and had also disabled it for scripting too. I found the setting buried in an RM adm in the end. Watch this space for when it all goes pear-shaped though!
  3. Discontinuing the use of RM and their support and am using the RM AD in the interim until we migrate to 2008 and rebuild the domain. Thanks for the tip about add/remove adms.
  4. Hi All, I'm trying to change a setting in the standard usertype policy directly in AD. GPMC says it is in User Config\Admin Templates\System but the only thing that appears in Admin Templates is Research Machines. Where should I be looking? Thanks.
  5. I'm confused now. If we have saved £10 billion in austerity measures but the americans are whining because they are in $1trillion deficit, then does that mean that we've already saved ten times their total debt?
  6. Hi All, I'm in a bit of a bind and was wondering if someone could help. A dept over here has had some of these classpad things sitting in a cupboard for a couple of years and have decided they want to use them but they don't have any software with them. Tried contacting RM and got no luck tracking down drivers etc so thought you guys might be able to help!? Cheers, GSK
  7. I was hoping someone could shed some light on this for me: 1) is it legal to cache and store an entire website for offine browsing? 2)are there any caveats to this regarding subscription websites? Practical example: I have a 2 day free trial to a news website. I want to view it offline at my leisure, so I put a website cacheing program to work and store it all on my laptop/server. I might also want to keep the offline data for more than the 2 days. What are the legalities surrounding this? Regards, gsk
  8. Hi All, Does anyone have any good suppliers of D-Link kit or would any of the forum sponsors be able to give a price on one of these IP Cameras? Thanks, gsk
  9. Hi all, I'm at one of the primary schools, where they've had issues with toolbars being installed in IE. In trying to get rid of them, I took the simple root of resetting IE to factory settings in the advanced tab of internet options. This worked for the current user but not for the others. Any ideas how to clear it for all users please?
  10. There are already a couple of icons on the student desktop that were installed when packages were deployed :-S. I have done a program set for now, but the ICT Co is getting uptight about it. Point taken about users storing stuff on their desktop though, thanks
  11. No. It's not for profit, it's for a school, for kids to learn. One of the schools I work at had the students put together a video promoting the school and would show it to parents as an introduction type thing. Someone brought up the copyright thing and so I was tasked with getting the copyright for the backing track. It was atrack that went really nicely with the video, the students could relate to it and it added a bit to the video that you can't really get with some generic copyright free music. I set about it and found that you have to contact the label that holds the licence to it rather than the artist. Then I found out that the artist changed labels and some songs but not others had the copyright transferred to the new label. Once I had figured out which label held the copyright, I tried to get in touch with them. Any form of contact was a complete nightmare. In the end I found a number that went straight through to the label. Great. I spoke to someone who told me that their parent company Universal deals with licensing. They gave me a number but that person had left. So I contacted Universal Licencing directly and kept getting forwarded to their American office who said that it was the UK branch I needed to deal with. Then after 2 weeks of pestering I got through to someone who specifically deals with copyright for education in the UK. For video. He said he knew who could help with music and gave me their number. They said it wasn't their job but they'd look into it for me. 2 Weeks later I got an email reply saying that they would licence the track for internal use on DVD media for 2 years for a maximum audience of 250 (open evening) for £4,000. If we wanted the video on our website, we'd have to pay more. If we wanted to send DVDs home to parents, we'd have to pay more. If we wanted students to be able to see the video over the network, we'd have to pay more................. Is it any wonder that so many people decide it just isn't worth it? There was no profit to be made by anyone and was just a showcase of student collaboration. £4,000.
  12. Hi All, I want to put a shortcut to Outlook Web Access on the desktop for all users on every machine. The school is using CC4. I have tried copying/creating the shortcut in the all users> desktop folder, but it doesn't appear for anyone but admins. Can anyone help please? Thanks
  13. Hello All, This is quite a random thought, but I'm hoping someone can help. I have noticed at the side of the road that new signs are being put up with a sort of hollow girder with cross supports. I'm assuming this is because it's stiffer than a regular cylidrical pole. Can you get this sort of thing for projector mounting rather than a regular pole? On long poles the shake on the projected image is off putting at best and a H&S problem at worst. Cheers,
  14. Doesn't the RM one do something with the Postgres database that NTBackup doesn't? Thats what RM support told me... :S
  15. This would be my preference and is what I did when I first got out to these primary schools, just to get an emergency backup of the data while I worked through the RM stuff. Apparantly there are issues with restoring the CC4 database and blah blah blah. Staying with the RM thing is what the schools want and it keeps it simple I guess.
  16. That's brilliant, thanks.
  17. Hi All, I'm sure this is just another quick one, but how do you configure RM Server Backup to backup to an external HDD. I tried putting G:\Backups\ into the media type but it doesn't work
  18. It displays RMR, and then when I press the shift keys its say's "Pd" next to the "RMR:" It usually just has a P next to it and goes into. It's just hanging there at the moment.
  19. Sorry about this. Again. I have two hopefully simple questions: 1. When I press both shift keys, why does this particular machine say "Pd", rather than just "P" like the others i've done? 2. How can I change the name of a PC and get RMMC to pick up that change? Any help is much appreciated!
  20. That's a really useful tip. Thanks. I wondered why some of the schools still on SR1 didn't have this GINA thing on them. Very confusing. I wish they'd either cover it on the course or just leave stuff alone!
  21. Don't I feel daft. This RM thing has turned me into a vegetable. Safe mode didn't even cross my mind!! Thanks
  22. I have a computer that won't logon to the domain so I want to login locally so that I can disjoin and then rejoin it to the domain. But with this horrible logon UI, I can't get it to log on locally. Am I missing something obvious? In the top right of the screen it says class1.XP Professional, but when I put in class1\administrator it won't login. Also, I know that this problem will disapear when it's updated to SR2, but I'm trying to get the network usable before it gets updated, because I don't think the school will be able to take the network off or give us the hours to run the update before half term.
  23. Yea. I remember them saying a product is a group of packages etc. but it just didn't occur to me that RMMC was a pruduct! I looked in the reference book they give you at the course and that just said 'add a shortcut' so I popped the shortcut into a new program set and assigned it to the proper group and got nothing. Thanks for your help
  24. This is where I was getting confused. Thanks
  25. How do I grant access or install RMMC on a workstation so the system admin can access it from there?
