We are just looking at coppiers instead. going to get aKonica Bizhub 250C in on trail for a week the running costs look better than our current A4 Color Lasers. The copier comes with a maintenance contract so its not up to me/us to pay for services / fixing it. and the actuall cost per page comes out less than my estimate for our current A4 Color lasers. Time wil tell i guess.... it wasn't that long ago i was pleased i had irradicated all the Ink printers in the school...

I guess you know already but if its Exchange 2003 it HAS to go on a 32 bit Win2k/2k3 server and therefore theres no point buying more than 4GB of ram.

I think any new ish Server will run it fine.. the main thing is RAM at least 2GB and disk space is down to how you want to limit the mail box sizes. our exchange server is a 1U Intel server. it now has 4GB (now) in and a dual Xeon HT procs.. can’t remember the speed... but the CPUs aren't taxed. it also is our Share Point Portal server. We got just a mirrored SATA drives in there and its fine. it supports about 700 Mail boxes. before its RAM upgrade it had 2GB and it was on the limit (but it ran both Exchange and Sharepoint (which had an SQL instance too) Exchange 2007 is a bit different. it idles at about 3GB (2GB immediately after boot but a few days later) and on this test server its only got about 5 Mailboxes - the Web Access is nice in 2K7 though!!

using an old Pannel from a 15" TFT some tape solder and a few cables you make a cheapo Video/Data Projector and seel it to some unsuspecting kid!!!

i need to test this too, we do use the IIS pass through for external, and internal acces at present. i just need to try it over ssl... but i dont see why it shouldn't work.

An RM rep commented on this they were having a meeting with Serco sometime last week... thats all i heard about it i hope it works that would be great

i just got SWGFL to open a Nat back to our school servers HTTPS I use IIS and Web DAV for access to docs... and for Exchange via OWA

we have a pc with winamp on shuffle has about 8 days worth of music in the playlist that just runs an amp and some speakers in our room its on all the time...... Windows media encoder captures what winamp plays and pushes it to a media server, and there is a link on the intranet so staff and kids can listen to if they so wish... intend to capture and push skynews out too soon.

looks smart shame about only 1 disk though..

Does anyone have the last free version of Wininstall LE 2003 that was avalible of there website? My copy got corrupted :-( and i dont seem quite able to get the 2000 ver on win2k server cds to work

My new home drives server is running windows 2003 R2 Server x64 SP2. All my XP workstations are fine with it normal fast access... and it is fast. but browsing the server from a vista workstation is dreadful. If I go \\servername then I wait a while (5-30 Secs) the shares show up and I choose one... then I wait and the directory listing appears, again and so forth!! Its the same If access is via a mapped drive or even if I am accessing a dfs path when its acting as the active target. or by \\ipaddress Copying Data from / to the server is also quite slow. 1m:30 ish for a full ish CD iso and only 20-30 secs to another server The Server in question is a DC and a DNS server other than that it it’s just a file server I have one other X64 R2 server also SP2 (not a DC/DNS) but access to that one is fine. And access to all my 32Bit Servers are also fine. Its a really strange problem and I can’t find anything in the event logs etc. It’s not a huge problem as we don’t use vista on any workstations except our play ones in the office, but I got a new pc today for someone it came with vista so I added it to the domain and it exhibited the same slow access. I will put xp on it but I was curious to see. Problem is with both 32 bit and 64 bit flavours of vista DNS resolution isn’t the problem that was my first thought but it’s ok. Basically has anyone come across this? I googled it an found a couple of threads with people having the same problem but didn’t get any answers!

i used the customisation wizard when i moved to mandatory profiles you can put something like %usernaem% in the username field. updated my office install point and then had to "repair" all my deployed copies a bit of a nightmare but it did work. when move from my current 2003 server to a 2007 server i guess i will have to do that again!!

if your going to "play" with it first i would setup a test domain not just a test server because it updates the AD and the Schema i put exchange 2000 on one of my DCs when i only had a couple of servers and it made a bit of a nightmare upgrade when i got my real exchange server on a dedicated box.

I used to use DDS tapes but i was swapping four or five just backing up all the important data so now what i do like most it seams is backup the servers to Portable HDDs using NTBackup. I take full server backup every half terms and then taken off site. For the rest of the time over the weekend all the important data is backed up onto a server located not in the rack. Its backed up using NT Backup and Backup Assist, which is really good at scheduling NTBackups it and its cheap. I looked into LTO but came to the conclusion that its cheaper and easier to use External Disks.

if your keeping the same folder structure i find using NTbackup to backup and then Restore the easiest way to move home folders and keeping security info, especially if you as administrator don't have access to certian folders.

You could use DFS to replicate your home drives. We use DFS for other data but not home drives. Though I do use the DFS links for all mapped drives that way you can move data around with out people knowing. Create a new DFS Namespace so you end up with \\domain\DFSNamespace you then can create links from there ie programs (\\domain\DFSNamesspace\programs) the link would say point to \\server\programs$ say. Then add another link say to \\server2\programs$ You then change the mapping to \\doamin\DFSNamesapce\programs... that way it gets load balanced. Few things to watch when replicating you may need to increase the staging space... keep an eye on the FRS event logs for it to stop the error tells you howto increase it. Other things is the filters.. by default it doesn’t replicate .bak .tmp and~* so you may need to change that.. we did since our office admin install point had a .bak file somewhere in the folder which didn’t replicate and then the deployment failed!! I haven’t replicated the home drives though but it would work the same.. my concern was the extra increased replication traffic We replicate our Programs Link our Pupils Data and Staff Data. I do map our home drive folders through the DFS so I can move them from one server to another by destroying and recreating the link should I need to. We don’t have two sites here so I am not entirely sure how that effects the replication

I know this is a simple suggestion.. but after the power failure did you do a CHKDSK on the volume? to sort out any errors on the disk... Do you just have the one DC or are there more... if there are more.. does more than one hold the GC Role?

we had this problem from 5-15 mins. moving the profiles from one server to another made a big difference back to 2ish mins max 5 on a bad day i also made sure i excluded as many paths from the profiles Application data folder as possible using GPO.. i didn't redirect that cause it has issues with ie proxy settings.. i assume that you redirect my docs and desktop so they aren't in the roaming profile...

Doesn't having one share per user put a lot of extra work on the server? and a lot of work on you if you start moving things around... it used to be like that when i came and it was NT4... now everything is mapped through the DFS name space so i can move things around the servers without people noticing.. so for example Students: \\dfsnamespace\dfssharename\home\Yearofstudent\%username% and say staff are: \\dfsnamespace\dfssharename\home\staff\%username% and no teaching: \\dfsnamespace\dfssharename\officestaff\%username% And the non teaching staff are on a different server to the students and staff We do folder redirection using the DFS name space too.

Thanks Iain the Default GetDate() gave me the clue.. so I found the Colum in the SQL database and put this in as the default value removed the date and time from the insert and the time Colum for the DB and it now works a treat !!! Thanks...
