Event viewer showed errors for Autoenrollment (Event ID:15) and Userenv (Event ID:1054). Basically complaining there wasn't a domain available. I disabled PXE network booting, problem disappears. I hate these PCs.

What about deploying it as an msi + cfg.xml (exported from working client) via group policy, it might just overwrite the settings with the good config. Then again, I've been using a trial version for 3 days, and have no idea what i'm doing. Hat's off to you if you can do anything with that management interface, seems like it has a really decent client side though.

We've used it for over a year now, i've been impressed with it although the postini filtering isn't the most appropriate solution that is now free as well. Seems a stable platform and Google Docs had lots of potential although I'm a little underwelmed by it in it's current state. A large part of us having a go with it was just down to cost: Previous paid web based e-mail service was awful, so anything else will be better We couldn't afford an exchange server We don't have capacity to back up an exchange server We don't have enough IT staff to support and manage another service Our network infrastructure was questionable at the time of deciding so a cloud service seemed appealing. I'm still looking at dual some kind of dual-delivery system for outbound SMTP to catch a copy of everything that goes out as the Postini service for that is a little pricey, although taking their service would work out cheaper than exchange in the long run considering software and hardware upgrades. I also still need to setup the LDAP sync or buy something to help with user setup and email group creation (just to make it totally hassle free and automatic), but even doing a CSV import it's incredible low maintenace.

What about setting the autoupdate flag to stop it prompting for newer version? Or was that just on the older builds? I've probably managed to get permissions wrong somewhere as they both fail with amazing speed...

Are the Shockwave and Flash msi files from Adobe designed to install without any kind of transform? I'm new to software deployment via group policy and i've got a 3 policies set up for installation of NOD32, Flash, and Shockwave on computer startup. The NOD32 installation runs without any problems, it doesn't look like it even attempts to install the other two. I'm not using security groups as i'm only in a test OU at the moment, all the msi files are in the same installation share. I didn't get a chance to check the event logs before I left tonight but is there anything basic that i've missed? It's a new image so no old versions are installed, the network infrastructure must be running okay in order to complete imaging and install NOD32...

Printer going offline was sorted by switching to an alternate driver. Error messages while setting the printer as default are fixed by not putting space characters in the printer alias.

I think the AMD PhenomII was meant to be pretty good, there is a tri-core version if you can't afford the quad-core.

Under a heavy load (i.e. booting as a CC3 workstation) i've found that the standard Pentium dual cores are nowhere near as fast as the Core2Duo

If you've got PXE boot enabled on the workstations try disabling it, I found out this week that it can cause strange DHCP behaviour and interfere with normal traffic.

Are the switches running the latest firmware? We've had a Netgear one that was unstable out of the box and an Allied Telesyn one which would just reboot constantly when connected. Both issues were addressed with the lastest firmware. If you phone a suport line that's the first thing they'll check.

I'm running Xenserver for 4 debian VMs (built from the pre-made debian templates that shipped with Xenserver). They will sometimes lock or crash in unison, probably about every 3 or 4 weeks, normally when I attempt a shell login on one of them. Since I upgraded from version 5 to 5.5 (with all hotfixes) I've lost the ability to reliably export backups which now fail with checksum errors about an hour into the process. I'm hoping version 6 will rectify things, but to be honest even if it did, I'm still tempted to defect to something else. If you are looking for virtualisation on the cheap (or free) then VMware seems to have much more community support even though the feature set isn't quite as impressive as Xenserver.

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post, but my problem relates to the FOG Printer management so I'm thinking OS deployment is the closest match. Anyway, i'm setting up a a small room with only 7 PCs in it as a vanilla test room (alternative to CC3 on the rest of the site) and was planning on using the FOG printer management to handle printer management. I've got the managment options set to 'Add and remove', so on the first login (as me although i've tried a student account first as well) it removes the Microsoft office document writer and installs the printer ("Library Laser"). Ok, so I log out and log in as another user, don't get any messages from the FOG client (appears to have kept the same printer installed), then one of two things happens a) do a test print - no problems... or b) do a test print, no errors, but nothing comes out of the printer, log out, log back in as me to check out the printer settings, I can see the printer installed but it is greyed out and appears offline. I can see the document sat in the print queue and it appears to have spooled into the local machine rather than the server. If I refresh the printers from the Fog tray then nothing happens (because the printer of the correct name is installed), if i rename the printer in the Fog database it will reinstall under a new name and start working again. The printer defintion points to a server share \\servername\sharename, i've also tried going straight to the printer (via ip address) and installing drivers locally instead of from a share, the result is the same everytime (make me think the problem is to do with how the printer is installed). I must admit that printer configuration isn't my strong point, (am I right in thinking that it's added into a users profile, but then why can I can still see the printer when I log in as someone else, why doesn't the Fog client add it again?) which is why i'm slightly confused. Because i'm running this on the side of CC3 I can't use roaming profiles or mandatory profiles, so i'm just letting a local profile build and redirecting all of the folders. I've disabled pretty much all of my GPOs and that doesn't make a difference. Any help would be appreciated.

If the computers haven't got floppy drives then hopefully somewhere you'll find a special USB memory stick which will pretend to be a floppy drive. Basically you start up the build disk manager and insert floppy disk, choose the 'Standard' build disk and let it write to the disk. Then insert the USB stick, it should show up as floppy drive B. Then do a disk copy from A to B. Then boot the machine you want to rebuild with the stick in it. If the 'Standard' build disk doesn't have the required DOS drivers to use the network card then it won't work, you then have to either install the latest hardware support packs from RM which will update the 'Standard' build disk or use the build disk manager to manually add the drivers. Be warned that if you install the lastest RM hardware support packs then it will remove older drivers from the 'Standard' disk and move them to the 'Legacy' build disk configuration, so if you have older equipment you might have to use that as well. I'm not sure if you have to be under a support agreement to be able to download the HSPs from RM, if you can't get them let me know and i'll try and get you the drivers from our build area. You should be able to run a utility called RM Version Reporter or something like that to see which HSPs you already have installed.

Thanks for the info... All of the FSMO roles are on the PDC, it is a global catalogue server but there are 3 others. So hopefully AD should come off gracefully, there may be a slight issue though, when running dcdiag i get: The DS has corrupt data: rIDPreviousAllocationPool value is not valid No rids allocated -- please check eventlog. ......................... SERVER-NAME failed test RidManager Eventlog is full of SAM errors (ID:16650) The account-identifier allocator failed to initialize properly. The record data contains the NT error code that caused the failure. Windows 2000 will retry the initialization until it succeeds; until that time, account creation will be denied on this Domain Controller. Please look for other SAM event logs that may indicate the exact reason for the failure. I've had an RM technician remotely try to fix this about 6 months ago, in the end he just said it wouldn't cause any issues and it was safer to leave it than do something drastic to try and fix it. It started to happen after the server virus protection went wrong and filled the C drive with virus defintions, had to restore AD from a backup using directory restore mode. Since RID pools seem to be operating properly on the other 3 servers I'm hoping this won't be an issue, but as it leaves AD is this server going to attempt to release it's RID pool, see an invalid value, and fail?

RM do supply a TEC article on how to do this (TEC1433990) but i'm not entitled to look at it. I'm not looking to do this immediately, just wanting to see what is involved. I'm assuming all the Server 2003 guides still have to followed as per technet articles (Decommissioning a Domain Controller: Active Directory) but am I going to run into problems with it still being listed in RM configuration files or is everything based on Active Directory?
