I tried the example "You have mail" test, opened that, took me a while to find the attachement, opened that, running out of elbow room here methinks, then opened the web page. no minimize button that I could see. eventually twigged that I could use the toolbar down the right of the screen to swap between windows. and then there's all the kerfuffle of having 2 windows open side by side. who on earth dreamed that up? By the time I'd changed the first bullet point my "15" minutes was up. It was like doing needle point in welder's gloves. did anybody find a format painter in the word program? now this may sound silly, and I don't care how small the writing is, but just as in the end credits of modern day moving pictures where even the teaboy gets a mention, I think each and every one of us who have helped deploy this "product" should get a namecheck. In fact, we should have an edugeek panel, with a floating membership (i.e. whoever wants to be in on a particular session adds their name) offering, for a fee, to try out software in an environment akin to that of a school, not some sparkling lab coated perfect setup. Give them our feedback, and hope that they can incorporate some of our experience of working in schools into revisions of their software. I know we (some of you, anyway) are trialling/reviewing software/hardware for the benefit of edugeek members, but what I'm suggesting is something on a bigger scale. Does that make sense? I had an idea mid sentence and went with the flow. cheaper than therapy and more efficacious. beeswax

RM uploaded the tests to our server by 1400 today. tried out the practise test but didn't manage to complete the first section. staff and pupils are going to have to be sat down and walked through this. we might grumble at M$, but RM have come up with a generic web browser, email client etc which occasionally bears a passing resemblance to what they've been using for the past few years. RM think of everything. in order that we techies shouldn't develop a migraine when installing this software, they give you breathing space, such as 24 hours to verify your details, and 48 hours to download the tests to you. no, I'm smiling. beardswax

in my first week at my previous school we were broken into 4 times. mon, tues, thurs and fri. There was european footie on telly that wednesday night. we went from a pleasant groundfloor office with a couple of opening lights to a room with boarded up and barred windows/skylight cctv, dehumidifiers, swipe card entry (kept the teachers out). beerswax (not quite a spelling mistake)

I haven't seen the tests in action yet, but our head of IT thinks they're fab. Today's crop of problems hasn't helped: A teacher who couldn't remember where she saved her work, A scanner which didn't work until I plugged it in, A teacher who couldn't locate her 'Home' folder (she was logging on locally and denied this over the phone) Pupils printing instsructions on how to cultivate cannabis, and having to trace them, (ah, kids) no doubt you've checked out FFS. beeswax

yup. had the .net problem, called RM who emailed an update. still not happy with it. for example, configuring a dps workstation doesn't give me the 4 tabbed window shown in the technical guide(page 56). I only see the configuration tab. If I had more than 5 minutes without interruption today I'd probably be a lot farther on. but thanks once again for your help. by the way, we're trailling it on an AMD athlon 1.9Ghz with 480 Mb of ram. is it worth it, I wonder? beeswax

installed it on one of our servers last Friday and logged on to the site a few times to see if we'd been approved - it can take a day apparently - nothing doing. come in this morning, try to log on and get the message that our school information is corrupted. about to phone RM, anyone else at this stage? beeswax

Is it an 8 hour day, or would you be expected to work as and when required? How many days of the week are you expected to work? Assuming that a cruise lasted 7 days, would you have 7 days on and 7 days off? And does that mean that you'd get paid for the first week, and nothing for the second, effectively halving your rate of pay. Or, as I imagine, you'd be rushed off your feet for half a year or so, then find yourself doing little in the winter months. Depending on your age and commitments (family, mortgage, etc.) I don't think £65 a day is all that bad - some of us techies get less than that. Your accommodation is free, there's a staff discount, and no doubt, duty free goods. You may even be able to save some money. I would say that if you match the job criteria and you're young, single and renting accommodation, this doesn't sound such a bad deal for a few years. Do you think this would this look good on a future cv? God I feel old. beeswax

I’m trying to convert some .vro files to .avi so that I can send some dvd’s to Daughter1 at University (she's studying medicine and the dvd's are recordings of that German chappie who cuts up bodies an tv, and thinks he's Joseph Beuys). My dvd recorder (the one under the telly) records in this format (.vro). I did a search last night but could only come up with a paid for app called avs converter. It’s cheap, but I’d rather go free if possible. Can anyone help? beeswax

....I forgot to add that, like Edugeek, Moodle is a community. visit the site and see what it has to offer. Google Moodle and find out about hosting etc.. And another thing (it's not even Friday night), I once worked for a web design company which was commissioned to design, from the ground up, a large php-driven site for a well known school, with all the sort of content management functionallity that Moodle now offers, and that came in at a figure between what you're being asked to pay and 10 grand, including a years worth of maintenance and hosting. It may have been 4 years ago, but I feel the prices are still relevant. beeswax
