I had to eventually make a change in the config.php, but it seems to be working correctly in IE7, and not quite so correctly in FF.

It may be that person's opinion, but it could still represent a libel if that opinion is untrue or cannot be substantiated. Edugeek is not a hermetically sealed community, we're not discussing things over a beer in the pub, "just between the two of us", but for the most part we have a large audience. Now it may seem to you (not you personally, Grommit) that your opinion is worthy, but if it causes extra work for all the Edugeek staff, on top of the marvellous efforts they put in here, then think, "Can I back this up"? or am I just having a bad hair day?

The old and new school website were both created using the same CMS and Apache2Triad. The old one exists on an XP Pro box, the new one on a dedicated Win2K3 box with R2. I can access the new site if I use the local convention (127.0.0.1) either remotely or on the server itself. The included image shows what I actually see when I visit http://www.falingepark.com. Has anyone any ideas?

We had a (not very good - the person was duff, rather than the software) demo of this in Feb, and from what I can recall, parents' accounts would have to be added separately. The rest (pupils & staff) would be harvested from AD. Any VLE would have to be added to the bundle (Capita recommend Granada's LearnWise. I won't comment on it as I haven't seen it in action) you could try thisone or search the ICT Register for "sims learning platform"

In our LA that doc's called BSF Key Mi;lestones, and there's a section, "School BSF Vision Statements" with 9 bullet points, such as • Personalised learning • Curriculum access • KS3 and 14-19 strategies • Approaches to learning • More flexible learning environment • Improving attendance/behaviour • How ICT supports vision The idea is that each head takes on responsibility for one point and develops it as a bedrock for all the schools in the LA. This has got to be done by 6th July 2007. I see further down that it also mentions TUPE transfer of staff, which has to be agreed by 6th July.

I did ask our "man in the council" what provision there would be for training and update of skills once we'd been moved across to private hands. He usually gets back to me pretty quickly, but not this time.

Had a meal out with some friends last week, and in conversation mentioned the name of the company/consortium which is going to be providing our managed services. This group already provides for her department, and she asked them for a quote for two new computers, and they came back with £5000. That's not a typo. Five thousand pounds.

One of the many things which came up in conversation with the deputy head in charge of BSF at our school, was, "I work a lot of unpaid extra hours in order that certain things can be delivered at a certain time, and I do this because I believe in what the school is trying to achieve. There is an ethos here, and in many schools, where you go the extra mile in order that a pupil, or pupils can fulfill a task. How are private companies and managed networks going to maintain that ethos when we are no longer answerable to the teachers and pupils?" If you think many of us do the minimum work required, I refer to this post of mine. A second point arose some days later talking to the head. I think he was seeing how much we'd be prepared to do "behind the company's back", as in, "Surely, we wouldn't have to call the helpdesk in order that a simple task such as reminding a teacher which laptop keys they need to press in order to have screen and monitor working simultaneously?" The simple answer to that is, yes you would, otherwise the company would think that it's providing a perfectly acceptable service, when in fact it's not meeting any of its targets. The person who pays my salary dictates what I do, and if I don't like it then I get out.

comic sans that being said, I was told only last week that dyslexics find they can follow words and meanings written in comic sans better than most other fonts. Still hate the nnnrrggghh

My wife's been complaining about her mini cassette hand held dictation recorder only holding about 30 mins per side. I reckon there must be an mp3 variety on the market for office use, but it needs to have some sort of function for her secretary to stop/start/rewind while she's typing. Has anyone come across anything like this? I've seen some nice sony models online.

I'm trying to get my head round web parts for WSS3. Where to download them and how to install them. I managed this quite easily with WSS2, but doing a search on the MS site brings up what appears to be templates. I think th actual install will be a cinch though, if only I can find the darn things.

there was an interesting survey some years ago (Geoff will post a link no doubt) about the different ways US citizens and UK citizens use toilet paper. It seems we fold the sheets, this being more economical, whilst the Americans crumple theirs, being ever so wasteful. Someone got a PHD out of that, or not.

It depends on what "yourself" is. If you're a ravenous bug-blatter beast of Traal I would carry loads of appetite supressants. Try and get a map of the school (especially if it's a big rambling one) with all the rooms marked. Don't be afraid to ask questions. You're new, and you can't be expected to know where every switch cabinet is (mark it on the map). Don't worry too much. They obviously saw something in the interview which made them feel they could work with you. Be careful what you volunteer for/happily undertake, if it seems to be outside the realms of IT; check with your line manager, "Is this the sort of thing we normally do?" I always have trouble remembering people's names, that's why my girls are called Daughter 1 and Daughter 2. In the first few weeks you can get round this by being honest and saying, "sorry, but could you remind me who you are again?" Of course, if the bathroom mirror doesn't reply you're in big trouble. If you weren't nervous then I would be thinking that you're too cocky, too sure of yourself to learn anything. Good luck and don't worry.

In September 2005 started on circa 15.5k, full time, 23 days holiday + bank holidays, as an IT Technician. With incremental rises this is now around 17.25K, which isn't bad for someone working to my original job description. I wish I knew who that someone was.

did it come with an pre paid envelope? If so, put all your junk mail in, after removing any identification, and return it. It keeps the postie in employment.
