  1. When I was completing my Learning Through Technology degree back in 2010, one of the aspects I looked into was how would teaching staff prefer to receive their training? Almost 70% went for the Victorian model of sitting at desks facing the front. Admittedly we had a large number of staff who had been in teaching for over 30 years, but they are now being replaced as they retire, by younger, more tech savvy staff, though the problems of "white elephants" still exist. To counter this the school has formed a strategy group, including our network manager, which amongst other things, reviews the implementation of new technology, and I believe that within this group the views of the IT techs carries the same weight of argument as that of any other member of staff.

  3. We're looking to install an all-weather webcam to record the construction/erection of our new build and provide a feed for our website. Any recommendations?
  4. Where would you apply this in the NHS? If it's patient care then think of the NHS as more of a body/repair shop rather than a production line. I don't believe that the Just-in-Time system would be suitable. Back in January I ordered a new car for March delivery and I specified a DAB radio rather than the standard model. The car was still delivered a week late*. About twenty years ago my brother-in-law had kidney failure and was on dialysis for several years until a suitable donor was found. He was flown from his home on the Isle of Man to Liverpool where the transplant took place.TB is on the rise again, we've had AIDS and appear to have ridden out the SARS storm, but the next global pandemic could be right around the corner. How does the Toyota Production Model deal with that? *Incidentally, my eldest daughter was born a week or so late, a difficult birth for my wife, but she had all her limbs (but we knew this from the scans) and seemed fine if not a little grumpy. If anyone thinks getting pregnant is the closest we humans get to a production line, then the analogy doesn't bear scrutiny. Scans and tests could have indicated Downs or physical deformities. On a production line you don't often have to make life or death choices. If I have the wrong end of the stick then it's because I've misinterpreted what you were trying to say. I've a lousy cold and I can't sleep and your post floated to the top of my mind. My eldest daughter is now a doctor and I suppose there's some paternal instinct at play here as well.
  5. I'm with elsiegee40 and Sylv3r on this. Get their views heard
  6. I've been experimenting with Wordpress for our website redesign, and I'm having trouble getting the "Read more..." tag to work. It simply doesn't show up, though I can see it in the code. Has anybody else encounterd this problem and managed to solve it? At the moment the site is hosted locally.
  7. Our moodle site has been upgraded from v1.9 to v.2, and some content which worked in the earlier version is throwing up the error message - This page requires AC_RunActiveContent.js. It appears to be something to do with Flash but a morning's Googling hasn't thrown up a definitive answer. Has anyone encountered this problem and solved it?
  8. I'm going to Canada in a few weeks and am looking to reduce the weight of what I take abroad. To this end, I've been looking at these two lenses - Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX, and Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD, and wondered if any folk on here had practical experience of either of these lenses. 11. FN-GM and I work at the same school, though he's on a course this week, and I thought that this information might brighten his day a little.
  12. Assessment, Attainment, Behaviour, and Attendance appear to be the basic information set for parental reporting. I've been doing a search online but can't really find any information less than about a couple of years old. It may be that my search terms need tweaking, but is there any more current information out there?
  13. Our Head of ICT bought an iPad over the weekend and thinks they're wonderful.
  14. Hasn't the mantra for the last 30 years been that competition is good? Now they want to restrict each exam board to a single subject.
  15. We're flying to Calgary, travelling through the Rockies to Vancouver then cruising to Alaska up the Inside Passage. All tips and gratuities are included in the cost of the cruise (though they'll only trade in US Dollars on board), though it's good to know what we'll be expected to tip during the first week as we travel through the Rockies. Whenever we've been to the US we've always taken an extra soft bag to bring back a pile of stuff, mainly clothes and trainers, but it doesn't appear to be worth it for Canada. Thanks for your input.
  16. Masters of Photography: W. Eugene Smith A mother bathes her young daughter who had been stricken with brain damage from eating fish poisoned by mercury effluent. The photographer, Eugene Smith, had only just recovered from head injuries inflicted by at the hands of a mob of chemical company toughs in Minimata, Japan. Very moving. I can highly recommend this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pictures-Page-Photo-journalism-Graphics-Picture/dp/0712673881 by Harold Evans.
  17. We're due to go to Canada this summer and wondered how the prices of goods compares with those in the UK. Whenever we've been to the US we've found the price of trainers, for example, to be much lower than over here. Stores seem to hold a better range of stock, width fittings, half sizes and the like. Any advice welcome.

  19. If you use Google Analytics I've just come across this Cookie Law joomla plugin. As I don't use GA this is of no use to me. So what I've done is open the index.php page for the template I'm using, created the code I need to put before the tag, and made the necessary changes* to any javascript elements which set analytics cookies. * Modify the If you click the See example link on the page you'll see what to do.
  20. Silktide have produced a neat bit of javascript - Silktide - Get the code which appears to do the job.
  21. To be fair, some appear to be auctioning them for a good cause - BBC News - Olympic relay torches put up for auction by bearers. I didn't realize that each bearer got to keep their particular torch though. Just read a little more of the BBC News item, "Torchbearers were told in March that they will have to pay £199 if they want to keep the torch as a souvenir of their special day."
  22. I'm trying to configure this to work with a Joomla site, but not being a programmer I'm struggling. I would greatly appreciate any help and/or advice offered.
  23. It's a long story, but basically the architect was planning for our school to be under a Managed Service Provider (MSP) which meant that there would only be one techie on site. The MSP has pulled out of all schools in our area, returning those who have been Tuped back to their respective schools, and the new build budget has been cut with the consequence that the school won't be getting the floor space that was originally specified.
  24. I already suffer with tinnitus and have been "measured" for a hearing aid, but am a little too vain to get one
