  1. Thanks but I forgot to say that I am running the driver install program on the server, logged in as administrator, which doesn't have redirected folders (only the teachers and pupils have these). However, I could look at the registry entry on the server to see if there are any strange redirections, I suppose. My original question still stands: if my user folders are redirected to S: and i then meddle with S:, albeit temporarily while I do the install, won't I cause storage chaos for the users?? I think I am getting out of my depth here.... Further help appreciated....
  2. I am trying to reinstall Veritas drivers for our tape drive, after a number of problems. I click on tapeinst.exe in the Backup Exec folder on the server, and it looks like it is going to begin, then I get the following Windows error: Error 1327: Invalid Drive S:\ I have had a look on the net, and it looks possible that when the program was installed the first time it was done through a mapped or renamed or possibly an external drive, that no longer exists. One solution posted was to map the problem drive to the place where the install program is. However, we use drive S: for all our redirected user home folders. If I log onto the server and map drive S: to where the install program is, won't I cause chaos with user folders??? Help please! :?

    ERGO

Glad to hear that. As I said, I may be a being a bit premature. But to have to spend all this time trying to sort out a very new laptop, when the second one we purchased (same model) at the same time is fine is very frustrating. Have been on to my (new) account manager now and grumbled politely. Will post again if things get sorted out well.

    ERGO

This may be a bit premature, but I am starting to get a bad feeling about ERGO. We have previously purchased laptops from them, two at a time for staff, and they had been great. Easy to set up, felt good to use, etc. But the last two we bought a few weeks ago are giving me hassles, and I am finding Tech Support being less than helpful. is it normal to be asked to reinstall Windows on a laptop purchased within the last month when you have a 3 year rtb warranty and they've already sent you one replacement hard drive for another windows related problem??? Maybe I just have high expectations????
  5. See this thread. It has a bit more information on the same subject. http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2637&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
  6. Thanks. I have never set up a server so was not aware of promotion and demotion procedures, etc. The KB article looks helpful and I will work my way through it and the related stuff, and hopefully get this sorted.
  7. I have a Viglen server, installed with Windows Server 2000 under our old Classlink network setup. It still thinks it is on the old domain. All necessary files have been transferred to the new server on our new domain, which has been running for over a year now. At the moment, the old server is still sitting there doing nothing. I am thinking I would like to use it just as an additional machine that I could send backups to. But the school wouldn't buy a new operating system at present. Is there a way I can get this machine onto our current domain? I can get workstations on and off domains but this is a server. I know most of you will think this is a really basic thing I should know how to do, but maybe some kind soul will take pity on me....
  8. The tape drive is a Quantum DLT-V4, and as of Wednesday, normal service has been resumed. The problem was at a more basic level than I had thought. During the unexpected server/UPS shutdown, the tape drive somehow disappeared from device manager. Should have checked that first, but... The drive appeared to be functioning OK, but wasn't sure if the SCSI card (probably not the right term for it!) had malfunctioned. Anyway, I googled "not in device manager" and came up with some postings from other forums about manual scanning for hardware changes. Thought I'd give it a try (open device manager, Action menu, Scan for Hardware Changes) and it worked! However, backup exec still not connecting to drive. So tried the software repair, but that failed again despite me now having the media. Getting a "Error 1327: Invalid Drive S:\" and install fails. However, in the process of backtracking, I followed another instruction to use BEUtility (part of Backup Exec) to stop and then start Backup Exec services. This time when I did this, the tape drive made a noise. So I ran a test job and it worked. Backing up to schedule again. So far so good.
  9. For anyone else out there who comes across this and needs help, the answer to my question is yes it should appear in the device manager and now it does. The unexpected server shutdown must have done something strange. However, I finally googled "not in device manager" and found some suggestions from people who had run a manual scan for hardware changes. Our hardware hadn't changed, but the server had somehow lost the tape drive. I opened device manager and, in the Action menu, chose Scan for Hardware Changes. After a few minutes of searching, the tape drive was found and added. And I have reconnected Backup Exec by simply stopping the service using BEUtility and then starting the service again. Backup restored, as well as sleep at night!!
  10. We have Espresso and the cache pilot. It was a done deal through the LEA and so we didn't get a choice. It works OK though. However, if building your own, allow for the fact that the software gets added to very regularly. The cache box apparently has room for five years' worth of content. (The LEA were originally pushing the cache box on us as a place to cache our frequently used web pages, and software we wanted on the network - sort of a CD server; that seems to have a died a death since they found out that that would mean we would run out of space for Espresso quite quickly).
  11. I think you can link or load a presentation made using Powerpoint into the Notebook software as a resource (Gallery or My Content or something similar). Then just run it through the SMARTboard software. Possible the staff in that department have seen a PowerPoint run this way and assumed it was made with Notebook??
  12. Anyone have a standalone Quantum drive, and should it be listed in the device manager? We have a Quantum DLT-V4 installed on our server - at least it was for over a year. We had an unexpected server shutdown and UPS power down a good few weeks ago. The Quantum is connected both to the server and to the UPS. Anyway, after everything was powered back up, Backup Exec wasn't running and complained about not finding a physical volume library. I thought the problem must be with Backup Exec being corrupted by the shutdown, and have tried some things to repair this - so far with no success. Then I thought to look at Device Manager on the server, and I can't find anything like the tape drive listed (as it seems to say it should be in the Quantum documentation). My thought is perhaps the tape drive failed and that was what triggered the shutdown/UPS power down.
  13. In that case, I shall give up on doing anything with PowerChute for a while. I have quite enough on my plate with sorting out the backup device problem that this shutdown seems to have caused.
  14. I have the program files!! I rang Symantec back yesterday afternoon, as I still hadn't heard from them. They don't supply CD versions of 10d anymore, but they could provide a serial number to me that would validate a download of the product from their fileconnect website. After a few issues with the LEA proxy, I managed to download the whole zip file in about an hour. The unzipped files include the required msi for repairing the program on the server. I have even copied it onto one of the PC hard drives in case disaster strikes over the weekend. Now I just have to hope that either the final stage of the Symantec troubleshooter or a complete uninstall/reinstall will get Backup Exec to recognise the drive. And I did have a further thought. Maybe the backup drive became faulty and that was what shut down the UPS/server...
  15. 1. If I change the path so that My Documents isn't included explicitly, what effect will that have on users already on the system? 2. Likewise, if I add My Documents to the path in the mapped drive part of the Profile tab in the user account properties, what effect will that have on current users? 3. What issues will Grant user exclusive rights cause?
  16. After trawling the Symantec website, and coming across numerous postings on their support forums pleading for help that never seems to come, I finally found a number for non-technical issues/licensing issues. Rang this to explain about having license but no media. Seems I should have registered the licence online to get my copy of the media. Anyway, the very polite gentleman has created a support case for me and someone from Symantec is going to contact me within 48 hours....
  17. When we were told about VLEs and their benefits and uses, these included being able to notify parents that the football club was cancelled that evening (parent logs in to check before leaving office/home, apparently). It was also stated that some schools are already insisting that homework/coursework is only submitted electronically. I leave you to draw your own conclusions....
  18. How did you do this? We have the same problem. Every time a teacher says they are going to use clip art with a whole class, it's a nightmare. I looked to see if there was a way to change this through profile (we have mandatory) or GP but have so far drawn a blank. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place...
  19. We have redirected My Documents and have mandatory profiles. However, I have recently noticed that strange things are happening. Files sometimes get saved in the outside of My Documents. Clicking on My Docs on desktop means that these files don't appear. The only way I know that these files are there is by navigating to the user's folder in the shared data folder on the server. We have settings in AD and GP, which don’t exactly match and I’m guessing that is where the problem lies. We have changed from Classlink 2000 to Windows Server 2003. I think our mandatory profiles are set so that any profile on the local machine is removed on logoff. All our user data is in a shared User Data folder on the D: drive of the server. Teachers and Students have separate folders in the User Data folder. Within the Teachers folder and the Students folder are the individual user's folders. However, once a user has logged on, a folder called My Documents is being created. Some programs appear to be saving things outside of this My Documents folder; they are just saving into the user’s folder. The GP settings for folder redirection are as follows: User Configuration>Windows Settings>Folder Redirection>My Documents Setting: Basic (Redirect everyone’s folder to the same location) Path: \\servername\User Data\Students\%USERNAME%\My Documents Options: Grant user exclusive rights = Enabled Move contents of My Documents = Enabled Policy Removal Behaviour = Leave Contents (We substitute Teachers for Students in the path in the Teachers policy). However, in the user account profile settings in Active Directory, we have mapped the home folder to drive S: with the following path: \\servername\User Data\Students\%USERNAME% That is, we don't have the My Documents bit at the end. Are the two paths causing confusion? If so, would it be best/acceptable to add My Documents to the mapped drive part of the user account properties rather than removing it from the GP settings path?
  20. Aggghhhh!!!! I am following Symantec kb article 255501 from http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/255501.htm which is where my error message took me. After trying the various listed methods of getting the device back up and running, I am left with the last one on the list which asks you to stop BE services, delete the SCSIChanger key, shutdown the server, shutdown the tape drive, start the tape drive, start the server, go to Add/Remove Programs, click on BE and choose Change, then Repair. Fortunately, I did export the SCSIChanger key from both places before I deleted them. But Repair has failed, as the Install program can't find VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers.msi! Neither can I! And I don't seem to have the media either!!! I have the licence certificate and the delivery notice/purchase details, and it's obviously installed. But I can't think what my next step is now...??????? Other than speed up finding a new job.... Help! Anyone!!!!
  21. Just to post here that there is a really good section on profiles (mandatory, roaming, local, etc.) in the Edugeek wiki. It's been a lifesaver for me. Link below: http://edugeekwiki.rm-charlton.net/index.php/Setting_up_profiles
  22. Thanks. I think the solution on the Symantec list, to remove the SCSIChanger key and then run a repair of the software through Add/Remove Programs may have the same effect (I hope so anyway!). If not, I may have to beg for some help with the re-install!!
  23. Tried that on Monday, worked through various suggestions on 18 page Symantec troubleshooting doc, then tried it again on Wednesday. Device still offline and refusing to be found. Last thing on Symantec list is to delete the SCSIChanger key from the registry. Then power down and up again. Getting desperate...
  24. How do I cope with stress? Well I just read this: and realised that what I'm having to cope with is nothing!! Seriously, your workload must be illegal! Is there any way you could make use of students as volunteers? There must be one reponsible individual there. Sort of work experience and you'd give them a good reference, etc..? Even just setting up the projectors for assemblies and making up word templates might make a difference. But then, I guess you wouldn't have the time to train them...!
  25. Thanks for the suggestion. However, I tried rebooting the server yesterday lunchtime, with the backup device switched on ready, and it is still not being found. I have managed to go through the job log for the job I tried to run and which failed. There is an error code there which links to the Symantec website. I now have an 18 page document to go through to troubleshoot the problem!! To be fair, I can discount the first few pages, as they deal with incompatibility issues and incorrect drivers, and I know the device was working fine up until the power shutdown. Will try and post solution if I get this fixed! In the meantime, I also need to find an alternative backup procedure for the interim period...
