I've done a few screenshots of Start menu, desktop and LAN settings to try and determine what if all policies are not being applied, or just some. However, because I'm dealing with Win2000 it may be difficult to tell. In the Start menu, I do have Logoff added, but maybe that would be there in Win2000. But it isn't suppressing things like the Search and Help menus. It hasn't picked up the changes to the LAN settings either, although it must at some point have picked up an earlier change. I think I am back to thinking that I have a couple of dodgy network connections...??

No idea if this is any help, but: The LNM shortcut points to the following URL: http://localhost/ManagementConsole And I have just removed the exceptions to our local IP addresses from the Advanced section of LAN Settings in Internet Explorer options, and I can still get the shortcut to work.

Thanks. I've tried this, but nothing has changed. And I am wrong about this being on only one computer. There are three desktops in this classroom, and the cabling for the network is different in this room to the rest of the classrooms (long story). The oldest desktop of the three is behaving as it should. The two newer ones (same make and model) are not picking up policies/profiles. (One of these was away getting a new power supply so I couldn't test it at the time of first posting). Both of these are taking an age to boot and then log in. Once logged in they are picking up printers, desktop icons and menu items but are not suppressing other icons and menu items - so the desktop is littered with extra icons. All three are Win2000 Prof. I have gone to another identical make and model in another classroom and that is behaving properly. Annoyingly, I think this has been going on for ages, but no one thought to report it. I only picked it up when someone reported a different fault on one of the machines. Oh, and I have tried removing the computer from the network and then adding it back in, and that hasn't worked either.

I suspect this problem has existed a long time, but I have just gone to run gpupdate and got this error message: Cannot find file gpupdate (or one of its components). make sure the path and filename are correct and that the required libraries are available. So something isn't right! I have 16 other machines of same type, but none of these have same problem. Looks like i'm missing a vital networking component. Which one and how do I sort it out, please?? (Windows 2000 machine, Windows 2003 server).

I have one client computer that is running slow across the network, taking an age to login. Then, when logged in, it picks up some elements such as printers from the login script and mapped drives and shared desktop shortcuts, but isn't suppressing common elements. In other words, despite having mandatory profiles set up, the desktop is littered with icons and the Start menu has extra items on it. Other computers in the same classroom and of the same make and model are behaving fine. I have checked in AD that this computer is in the correct OU. Am I looking at a faulty network connection here??? Or have I overlooked something very basic??

My Vista with IE7 setup at home has let me log out first time now.

Me too, but only in the last week at home! Running Vista Home Premium at home with IE 7. At school, the problem has been that it takes ages to say that it has logged me out, and then sometimes it hasn't - running XP Prof and IE 6 there.

I have just been on day one of our LEA two day portal administrator's course for Kaleidos and Portal+ (the LEA chose it so that's that...). Didn't get any real idea of what it is like, as RM demo site appeared not to be working. Get to do some hands on tomorrow, apparently, on our own site. Lots of issues were raised today concerning the appearance of the pages and connectivity with Integris (our school management software, again LEA-wide). I would really appreciate some up-to-date experiences from anyone using this in their schools now, and how long it took to set up initially. I am coming at this from the primary sector. We have been told it will take about 4 to 6 weeks to set up.

I have just had the same problem on older laptops, using Espresso - not playing video through projector unless laptop display turned off with Fn key toggle. Espresso uses Windows Media Player. Turning off video overlays didn't help, but have now found that also needed to update the version of Media Player on laptop to 10. Then the trick with unticking video overlays works as I suggested before.

Folks, I am really stuck with this one. Brief summary of situation so far: Windows 2k3 Server Windows 2000 client 1. Can boot the client from LAN (F12 key) 2. Can take an image involving LAN/LNM/Ghost when machine isn't sysprepped first 3. When I sysprep the machine, after booting from LAN, I then request to take an image and get told that the process is terminated because there is no information about the network card 4. Having done a Windows Explorer search, I can only find a program called Ghost32.exe in the RemInst folder on the server and have no idea if or how I need to install this to the client 5. The XP clients we have will create and restore images involving LAN boot/LNM/Ghost quite happily with Sysprep, and don't appear to have any version of ghost installed locally on them. Anybody??

I have had a similar problem to this which I fixed in Windows Media Player by changing a setting in Options. You have to open Media Player: try the Tools menu, then Options and then Performance. I was told to untick or tick the box next to Use Video Overlays (it may be in an Advanced part of the section), and check that Hardware Acceleration is set to the highest. Sorry it's a bit vague, but I'm at home and Media Player versions are different in their menu sections. It did fix it. Can't remember if I had to close everything and open it all again to pick up the changes.

I'll second that!! I even had problems downloading the gallery as the LEA broadband/proxy kept closing the connection half way through. After wasting an hour, I emailed them the link and asked them to download it for me! I have found a program called ghost32.exe on the server. Once opened, it show Ghost32 8.2, which I assume is the version number. But it is just on its own, no other programs with it. We are using Learning Network Manager, and it seems to be associated with that. I have just trawled the LNM documentation which deals with sysprep and imaging. The process uses RIS, and I can boot remotely from the Windows 2000 machines. The documentation I have seen so far doesn't mention anything about network card info, but does take you through the process of creating the sysprep.inf file using setupmgr or something like. Can't find anything about installing Ghost on the clients, and can't actually find Ghost on the XP clients which work fine with imaging. I remember the ICT provider, when still around, managed to take an image using RIS and LNM/ghost, from one of the 2000 machines, just as a test. But it hadn't been sysprepped so I can't use the image. The problem I had with the error message about network card information only came after I had sysprepped a Win2000 machine.

Can someone please tell me how to do this with Windows 2000 sysprep? I have found the kb article about Win2000 sysprep: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298491 but I still can't work out where or how I tell sysprep about the type of network card the machine has, and where the drivers are. Sorry.

I think that, on old Edugeek, when you went to your profile you could also see your last ten posts, and then click on a link to see all your posts. This was quite useful, as it meant I could quickly check at work for replies - my work LEA email is so slow that I have subscribed my threads to my home email account. I can't find the same link elsewhere yet. I can search for me and get all my posts (but only in Advanced Search), so maybe I should just do that? Or have I missed it somewhere?

No. Better safe than sorry, especially where I'm concerned! I've backed up individual keys before and found this very very useful, but a full backup of the registry hasn't been done before and may as well be done now. Thanks for all your help.

Don't hate yourself. It's always worth pointing out the obvious where I'm concerned!! You have actually confirmed my suspicions. When we had the old Viglen classlink setup, new machines always went into the Computers holding place when first added and then had to be moved to the correct place to work properly. So I need to create a new OU and work out some GPOs to apply. Should be interesting... Thanks folks! Maybe one day i will be able to throw the L plates away!!!!

Before I go ahead and edit the registry key back to the default, is there any possibility I am going to cause major problems by doing so? Bearing in mind this is our server and domain controller. Sorry, but I am on my own here and I don't want to screw things up!

I have recently demoted our old Viglen server. It was just lying around doing nothing, and we have had the new domain set up and running for over a year now. Now I have demoted it, I want to put it onto the new domain as a member server so I can maybe use it for additional backup or storage. But I'm not sure if it has to go into a particular place in the Active Directory heirarchy on the network, because it is a server and not a workstation. I don't need it to be able to do anything fancy. Could it just go into one of the workstation groups? Is there likely to be anything in a GPO that might cause problems for a server that wouldn't affect a workstation?

Great stuff! I've managed to demote the server. I just used dcpromo without the forced removal bit, to see if that would work first. That opened the Active Directory Installation Wizard, and I just chose what I hoped were sensible answers to the questions it asked me!! Anyway, I can now log on to the server locally, and hope that means I can join it to the new domain. Thanks for your help!

I think @shirzay knows where to find it, but is saying it is grayed out and he can't change it. I have just checked my domain policy and I can edit it fine - no graying out. But I don't know enough about GPOs and their interdependencies to know why a GPOs setting would be grayed out. Perhaps there is another GPO higher up that overules the one @shirzay is trying to edit???

Primary sector schools definitely do not all have IT specialists permanently to hand. Nor can they all buy in the help they need. Neither do all "IT specialists" know everything necessary about every field of the subject (which is why edugeek exists, I suppose). Yes they can if they can afford them (lots can't). And I am quoting Becta's advice about Office 2007 and Vista at this school for the time being. The way things are going, we will probably be forced into Vista eventually (some of our new staff laptops are XP installed but only have Vista recovery disks and product keys, and the supplier says that we would have to contact Microsoft direct to get an XP product key to do a reinstall if anything goes wrong), but I don't have the time, expertise or support here to go down that road totally by choice and if Becta are giving me a way out then I'm very grateful...
