I have had a few more ideas but they are only ideas. 1 Do teachers have admin rights or passwords. I have had teachers delete folders to make space as its not theres and it a large one its an easy target. 2 Have you had a kid spot your admin password. Kids love destroying things 3 Have you had anything come up about psexec in sophos. Has someone created a script that would run remotely and deleted it. 4 Have you had any more viruses. 5 Have you checked the condition of the drive. If part of the drive was corrupt in the fat the folder could disappear. Only ideas Richard

Hi I have had it when a child was bringing a laptop into school and was plugging it into the network and they had set up dhcp server on it to bugger the network, I have also had it where a teacher had shared there internet connection and every time they plugged into the network it gave out addresses Lastly if you have a nt 4 server chack that first. Good luck with the search. Richard

I have had this problem 2 I dont remember the make of the laptop but it was a buffalo card. What we had done was install the drivers from the wifi card cd. Because it was not using the windows files it would not kick up till you logged on. As you had no wifi connection you could not log on. Brill What I had to do was uninstall the driver from add and remove programs and then get it to detect hardware. When it found the card we told it to search the cd for the driver and that just cured the problem. I have also seen the same thing with some netgear wifi cards and usb sticks. Richard

I know this will sound silly but the computer does not have an extra partition or drive in it does it and somebody has install the os on the other drive. Richard

HI It might be your dns. Try pinging the name of the exchange server and see what ip it has for it. Then check that the ip is the same. Also check the mx records you have for the exchange server. You might have a record missing or a preference value set wrong. Just a thought. Richard

I had a similar problem and used ident as a service on the clients and it just works. No problems. Richard

We use the same wallpapers for all computers. Create a folder in your netlogon folder on your server called bginfo Create a logo.bmp at 800 x 600 and save it into the bginfo folder. Copy the bginfo program into the bginfo folder. Start the bginfo program and create a template with or with extra text to be diplayed. Set the option so that it creates the bmp in the temp directory. Set the option to stretch the image. Now save the bginfo file into the bginfo folder. Look that the help file and find out the command line options to use the program and save this into a .bat file in the bginfo directory. Its something like \\servername\netlogon\bginfo.exe /timer:0 /i \\servername\netlogon\filename.bgi Please check this I am doing this out of the top of my head Test on a machine. Once you have it correct. Place a logon script into the machine and the user logons to run the bat file. What it does is uses your wallpaper to create a bmp in the tmp directory of the machine based on you original image that the computer sets as the wallpaper. If you get it to add extra information it adds that information to the tmp .bmp. If not it just uses the bmp you created as a wallpaper. If a user changes the wallpaper the next time they log on it resets it. I have locked down the policies to stop them changing the wallpaper at all but I dont remember off the top of my head where it did it. This method just works and you can change the wallpaper for the entire school just by changing the .bmp file in the bginfo folder. No messing no fuss and no messing with the registry. It just works. Richard

Why don't you use bginfo and run it as a script on all computers at startup you can download it here and it just works. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/bginfo.mspx Richard

I had one in the other week and they said one day it worked the next it had stopped and when I had a look it was full of cat pee the silly animal used to sleep on the laptop because it was warm. I managed to get it going by removing the hard drive and then it got to the bios. For some reason it would not even post with a blown hard drive. After I replaced the hard drive it was ok but it never smelt the same again. Richard

Create a room.bat file for each room and add a line delprof /q /i /c:\\"machine name" for each of the machines in the room that you wish to run delprof on. Copy delprof into the same folder as the bat files. Make sure you are logged in a domain admin and run the bat files. Remember do not run delprof on machines where profiles are held locally or where favorites are held locally eg laptops and teachers machines. Please note that if this has not been done for a long time it will take many hours. Good luck. Richard

Yes I have I have managed to get it to apply to the admins and the staff now but I cannot see why its not coming through on the students. I have updated the adms so all the policies are on the same version and this fix it for the staff and admin but I cannot see any difference between them and the students. When I do a gpresults the students appear to get the correct settings for the proxy and there internet is working but through the old cachepilot instead of my dansguardian box. Have you any ideas. Richard

I have just tried changing me proxy gpo settings for my network and its not applying the proxy put is applying all the rest of the settings so maybe its to do with ie7 rather then vista. I am also going to try the ie7 adms on monday. Richard

Tera stations are great I use one to back up to. Richard
-
Hi We use Tera servers and they work great. You can put them on different sides of the school it just works. One word of warning you will be told to make a backup that you can take off site. That one is easy 2 get 2 external hard drives. Backup onto the tera server normally and then once a week backup the backups onto the external hard drives in turn and keep one at home. Its not the cheapest solution but its easy. Richard

HI If you run windows updates on the machines does it work ok. Go to a machine and click start run and type proxycfg -u Reboot the machine and try again. This fixed mine and I put the scipt into the startup script on the wsus policy. Richard

I am running both Sophos and wsus 3 on the same server but not the 64 bit version. They work together great. Richard

HI I used to have this problem with published. Kids were creating files that were huge and there was not enough room for the spooler file on the server. I have the move the spooler file to another partition and this cured about half of the prints. I also fround that if published did not have all the pathces on it would crach during printing and saving. Richard

I am not sure what you mean. I started the script with Code: Please can you tell me what silly mistake I have made as it does not work for me. Thanks for all your help. Richard

HI I know this will sound strange but I cannot get the internet spy to work. I have downloaded the vbs script and copied it into the netlogon. I have creates a logs$ share on a server with space and created a folder in there called inet. I have set share and ntfs permissions to full control for everyone. I have changed the vbs script to look at the share in 3 places and it looks like this Code: ' C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat - Starting offset: 0000:5000 ' +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ' | Ensure that all variable names are defined! | ' +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Option Explicit ' +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ' | Setup constants | ' +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Const conBarSpeed=80 Const conForcedTimeOut=3600000 ' 1 hour ' +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ' | Setup Objects and misc variables | ' +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Dim spyPath Dim oFSO : Set oFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Dim oWShell : Set oWShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Dim objNet : Set objNet = CreateObject("WScript.Network") Dim Env : Set Env = oWShell.Environment("SYSTEM") Dim arrFiles : arrFiles = Array() 'Dim arrUsers : arrUsers = Array() Dim HistoryPath : HistoryPath = Array() Dim objIE Dim objProgressBar Dim objTextLine1 Dim objTextLine2 Dim objQuitFlag Dim oTextStream Dim index Dim nBias Dim strUserName ' +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ' | Whose been a naughty surfer? Hi I used to have an error somthing like that a bit back. For some reason an older install broke the new one. Sophos gave me a script that ripped off any version of the program. You had to reboot the machine and run the script again. Then when you reinstalled bobs your uncle. I am sorry I dont know you and will not send you the script as this is a dangerous scipt to post. Contact Sophos and I am sure you will get sorted. Richard

I dont think there are a lot between the hard drive manufactures these days. I have tried all sorts over the years and have had good and bad batches. If they survive more than a week then they appear to live a reasonable time. Then there appears to be wall about 14 months just after some of then run out of warrenty lols especially with laptop hard drives. The best advice I can give is guess and try to use some form of raid for essential data whatever you buy will always fail at the most inconvenient time. I am going to replace a hard drive not in laptop thats been through 2 in the last 12 months. Richard Carr Hill High
