HI I am having the same problem at the moment and have put in path rules for these into the student lock down policy. I am not sure if its fixed it all but has helped. But saying that I only deployed it on Friday last week. Richard

HI We had a problem with an old printers network cards and every time it started it bombarded the network with traffic and the switch it was connected to kept falling over. It was a case of trial and error to find it and it took ages. What I did was change the switch that kept falling over for a newer one which stopped the port that was bombarding it. This stopped the printer working and that was the way I found it. Just an idea. Richard

I have also applied the registry hack a long time ago and it messed my machine up good. I would advice you to get an old machine and install lots of ram and install a lamp verion of linux something like ubuntu. Its free and just works. Richard

Hi You can do this but I would not advice it. You would have to create ou's in users and computers and then populate them move the users and computers you want them to control. Then you would have to deligate control to that person. I have seen this done in business but never in education. Richard

Hi We do a visual inspection of all main it rooms every morning. We keep a list of faults found and dates and times of inspections on the wall for teachers to be able to see. Richard

Set the sophos clients ie the pcs not to scan external drives like the server. You can do this in the management console otherwise the client and then the server scans the file which is a pain. Give this a try. Richard

hi I copy the disks to a server and then create a 2 htlm pages with links to the correct folders. One has the site licience programs and the other has extra programs sorted by department. Just an idea. Richard

Hi I have downloaded the 1.2 version and want to run a test with it. When I deploy the msi through group policy do I have to use one of the mst files or can I just reply on the adm to set the settings. Also if the msi is deployed and none of the settings are set will it just run but do nothing or are defaults set in the program. Please could you e-mail deployment instructions before I start. I dont mean how to deploy a msi or adapt it with an mst more on the lines of what I have to go generally to get it to work with a windows 2003 domain with xp clients Thanks for all your help. Richard

I had this problem and had to update adms in group policy. That fixed most of them but not all I finally had to set proxy with a logon script setting registry settings. Copy this into a file called proxy.reg REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings] "ProxyServer"="server:8080" "ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001 "ProxyOverride"="server1;server2;test;" Now edit the file and place it your netlogon. Create a file called proxy.bat Paste this in regedit.exe /s \\network path\proxy.reg Now run this script in a script under user in your gpo. Please note that you might have to change a gpo setting to allow the user to be able to change this registry key. Just an idea. Richard

Hi I have done this on a windows 2003 domain with windows xp clients and it appears to work ok. Please could someone check that it works on another network it appears to work here. On a newly created windows xp machine. Log on and copy the default user in c:\Documents and Settings and put it somewhere safe. Log onto the desktop pc, configure your flash settings as via their global security settings page. Adobe - Flash Player : Settings Manager - Global Security Settings panel ie put in all the places that its ok for flash to run from c:\ d:\ \\server and http:\\server you get the idea Go to c:\document and settings and find your profile, The settings are stored in this file. C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\macromedia.com\support\flashplayer\sys\settings.sol Now copy the macromedia folder and paste it into the default user folder in \default user\Application Data\. Now copy the default user folder to your netlogon folder. When a new user logs on the network. They pull a copy of the default profile from the netlogon folder and then the gpos are configured. Please note that you will increase the bandwidth used at logon and may increase logon times by a few seconds but it does appear to work. Also if someone has already got a profile it will not fix the problem and you might have to delete the profile so when they log on next time they pull a new profile. Please be careful deleting profiles as staff can loose documents and favourites and be extra specially careful with laptops as lots of staff dont back them up. Richard

set up linux on an old box and put dansguardian on it. Then you can filter to your hearts content and see every thing they do. You only need a 1 gig box with 1.5 gig of ram to serve 300 computers so for just one of 2 a really old box would do. Richard

Hi We have just upgraded to flash 9 and some of the packages that run off the server like GCSE French E Grammer will no longer should the flash content. I have read that you can copy a mms.cfg file to the %WINDIR%\System32\Macromed\Flash directory and you can set the global security settings so that flash will trust the servers on the network. Please could someone help me with an example of what they put in a mms.cfg file for server1, server2 Also how do other people deploy this file through group policy. I know how to set these setting manually on each machine by going to Adobe - Flash Player : Settings Manager - Global Security Settings panel and adding the servers but there has to be a better way. Thanks for all your help. Richard

HI Have a look at the bios and make sure you have the latest version so that it turns the wifi card on at boot and make sure that windows in managing the wifi card and not the wifi cards software as this only starts after the user logs on. I had to remove the card software and then just loads the driver on its own. Just an idea. Richard

Have you turned off the onboard graphics card in the bios. Have read somewhere xp likes to default to that and can conflict with other graphics cards in some machines. Just an idea Richard

hi I dont know if this helps but download a program called newsid knock the machine off the domain and run delprof. Ghost the machine. Place the image on the new computer Now run newsid. You dont have to enter a key. Join the machine to the domain and then use a script to reset the wsus id. Just an idea. Richard

Hi I used to have something reported to me similar by staff and it took me a while to find out the group policy was not always applying the proxy setting. When you went to the machine and the start page would come up from the cache so it appeared to be on the internet. I had to update the adms on the server and then it just worked. Good luck Richard

HI I had one of those do that and I had to strip the whole thing apart. Clean it and let it run for a few days and then to it again. I found most the the dust come out of the fuser unit. What I found out after a few trys was that one colour kept coming out and it was a broken crartidge even though it was new. Good Luck Richard

HI This would be what I would do. Connect the laptops to the network and check to see if the logon time is ok. If the logon is the laptops are ok and its the wifi. Next check that the wifi routers are set up with different names and have different channel that are at least 3 channels apart. The set half of the laptops to use one and set the other half to the other. Now turn the wifi off on the laptop and plu it into the wifi router and check the logon is still ok. This will rule out if the router has a poor connection. Update the driver for the wifi card and have a look at the bios version. Try the laptop on the wifi and how it doing. Try moving the router and the laptop to another part of the building and see if it gets better. I had a problem at one school where a heating pump when running would kill the wifi in part of the building. Now try turning the encryption off on an access point just for a test and see if that helps. Remember to turn it back on. Now you could turn debugging on to see what is slowing the log on times down. I have seen radius servers not working correctly and not responding to clients promptly. Other things I have seen slow them down would be sophos and windows updates battering the connection because the machines have not been plugging in for a bit. I have also had to delete profiles from machines. Just some ideas. Good luck with the problem. Richard
