Network Manager pay should be £28K+, you can look on any IT job board and most positions mostly around London are earning this type of money, but the same job working commercially and not in a school environment should be £35K+ Schools pay very poorly ! Sickening !

We use a print manager software that enables us to give students printer credits and so allowing them to print only a certain amount of documents and therefore reducing the amount of paper usage, the software is designed by a company called software shelf, and it very good, very easy to install and setting up as well. There are so many tweaks in the software that will enable you to get a better control, things like restricting internet printing, number of pages, files with certain extensions, printer credit renewals, printer history reports, top ten users etc etc. Worth checking out as although I am not sure what the financial implication has been, but we have noticed considerable difference in paper use.

This is such hyped up technology it is unreal, when will people realise that this is pure eye candy, there are soooo many flaws to the iphone that makes my eyes water ! LOL !! :-)

Gatt, Do you hear the usual "bing bong" type noise that Windows makes when a USB device is plugged in? Does ActiveSync on the desktop even start up? If so, on your PC goto Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections. When you plug the PDA in, does a new connection profile eventually show up in the Network Connections window? It will be called something like Local Connection #6 or something similar

Is there any software that came with your phone Gatt that you could try, normally there is activesync cd with the phones ?, can your phone be detected ?

I know this may steer a little away from the toner life subject, but check out GreenPrint Software - Millions of Trees Can't be Wrong. This software allows you to control how much ink you should be using and also minimises paper loss (unnecessary paper usage), it is very good and should make your toner last longer by making sensible usage. Usual things, like giving the toner a good shake and resetting the drum also help.

There is no harm in getting additional qualifications, but for a network manager position a MCSA/MCSE/MCDST/CCNA etc etc would def be a better and stronger route.

MCP/MCDST/MCSA/MCSE does not have a time limit, neither do the exam vouchers. I am studying these areas and have checked with my lecturer and IT institute. Best to do one section at a time, pass it and then move on otherwise there is lots of reading/referencing and confusion !! haha!! good luck to those who take it !

Feel sorry for you slam, unfortunately I dont think complaining will get you anywhere!, although I would DEF complain about it!, it sounds like the job has been filled internally and for formality sake they advertised it externally. It is a shame really as the person probably has been working at the school for a long time and so knows a few contacts. Def ask for interview feedback and debrief, and then whilst you are looking for another job, complain about this and take it higher, people like this should not get away with things like this. ok, I tested Win 7 and runs smoothly compared to Vista, shame they cannot run the beta over a longer term, I have tried to change the date, but it expires immediately !, good luck anyway !!!

I presume you are aware that this is a beta version ? which expires in a few months?

Hey Graduate, sometimes you really have to be in the right place at the right time(!), no doubt easier said than done. I spent many years in trying to secure a IT position, and finally after a long wait and plenty of paitence....it finally paid off. in the meantime I done work with a local charity for free and learned a great deal there, enrolled on a MCSE couse, which I highlighted on my cv. To further support you cv and give you a bit of leverage I would suggest (time permitting and cost as well) that you get on a course like A+ or MCSE etc and this also helps. I know a few companies that offer job support after completing your training if that helps. If you need some names PM me. Some guys dont share the same view, but sometimes you need to create a strong foundation for yourself and dont just rely on you luck. Trust me, if my luck was that good I would have won the lottery by now !

I agree with you IanT, BUT if you read my post, I mention that HAVING or WORKING TOWARDS a qualification would be beneficial and NOT neccessary! If you look at any job website and see job requirements for strong upper management positions you will find that they DESIRE a certain level of qualifications, but this necessarily is not the only requirement. Simply reading up and then taking exams for cisco etc doesnt neccessary mean that you understand it, having experience is just as vital - this is the catch 22 situation. Why do you think that people with MCSE/CISCO etc etc earn more money than people with no qualifications ? this can be tested on any job website.

unfortunately it is very much a catch 22 situation, you cant get a job because you dont have the experience so how do you get experience ? Doing some unpaid work involving IT showing you are willing to work, whilst at the same time you are gaining experience. I can understand where some people say that qualifications are not that relevant, BUT having qualifications like A+/MCSE/MCSA etc does put you in a different league when you are looking to move up the ladder onto bigger things. I am working as a technician at the moment, but at the same time am working through the qualifications as well. So far I have graduated, currently working on the experience bit with evening study for my MCSE/MCSA classification, so am trying to build on my experience as well as my qualifications bit. So try and get the best of both worlds and get qualified as well!. Good luck
