  1. I had a similar issue to that one, my boss has my mobile number and she gave it to the office, one day i was in the computer room and got a phone call from office to put a phone call through. They try it now and again but i never answer my mobile unless i want to. They still ask all the time why dont i answer my phone.
  2. Moss's quotes are funny though although my favorite has to be.
  3. I though it was Roy who always said that line.
  4. i have repaired teacher computers before but i always made clear it was outside of my job and my choice to do this. The deputy head once did expect me to set up her wireless router, she even asked my boss if it was ok for me to do this, and was i free to go round her house the next day. i was stood right next to her at the time. she kind of caught me off guard and i said it would be fine. in the end she didnt need me to sort it out as all she needed to do was turn it off and back on.
  5. Today i had a kid come to me and ask if i would have a look at his home machine and that he would pay me. Now i said no that i couldnt but i was curious if any of you lot have done this. i potentially can see problems and personally i would stay far away from this. But i was curious if anyone does or has and what potential problems could arise.
  6. we have some computers where a simple change of jumper on the motherboard disables the front usb and enabled the back. why both cant be on i dont know. but removing the jumper let allowed the front to work.
  7. Thanks for the help removing the gateway seems to have sorted that problem out, although like some how said other problems could arise. But i guess there is still a flaw in our system somewhere, as some people have said setting the gateway to look towards the proxy. Thanks again
  8. I have set the exe in the software restriction policy and i think it is sorting the problem out, but when never versions come out they can get around it again. regarding (j17sparky) how would i take the gateway out of the dhcp info that gets sent out, and would this affect anything else. Also i dont have access to the firewall, i wouldnt really know how to block access or set up so it only goes though the proxy
  9. i have done that and blocked the application exe, the installer exe but they download it from home and bring it in. I have just noticed taht there was a new version of firefox, mabye they have just downloaded the new version but still this is going to be a problem. if a proxy is not set in the internet settings then internet access comes though with out authentication
  10. I was speaking to someone and they were saying that the firefox installer does not need admin priverlages to install, which is why the kids can install it. I dont know fully how it all works but its always seemed that any outgoing traffic points to the gateway first and we have to force the internet settings towards our proxy.
  11. I dont know if this has been covered before, but we are currently having some problems with the kids being able to install firefox, this is allowing them to them bypass our proxy and surf anywhere on the internet. i have had some other trouble with them installing firefox on there usb sticks and installing this program http://portableapps.com/ And using firefox from there. Is anyone having problem with this aswell or does anyone know of a solution. I have blocked the exe's to run firefox and the portable app program but some kids are still getting on somehow.
  12. have you checked the event viewer of when the pupils log in, do any errors come up when trying to run login scripts.
  13. cheers for that i didnt think about i was comparing the actual mac of the access point to the wireless card mac.
  14. I am just looking at net stumbler now but for some reason the mac address from it come up differenty than how they show up on the access point so icant tell which access point is which.
  15. Thanks for the help, i think i can set the channels seperately but there will be about 3 that will overlap, depending on how far the access points can see, as the case could be that alot may see each other. Do you know if there is any software i can use to pick each access point up. But as they have the same ssid i need to be able to see the different ones either by ip address or mac. Thanks Tom
  16. all access points are HP ProCurve AP 520wl and there all managed individually we have to log on the all to set anything up.
  17. Hi we currently have 17 access points around school and we have just upgraded them with g cards. But we are having some problems regarding connection around school. I was told that i need to manually set the frequency channel on each of them so they dont overlap. Now i have no idea how to do this or what would be the best way to do it. Does anyone have any idea or if someone has done this would it be possible to get some help or tips on how to do this. Thanks Tom
  18. we have the same network card in our machines, and i had a similar problem it looked like ris was working but windows would not install fully make sure your using the right nic driver. On the cd we got with the machine there were drivers in a folder called IntelPROXGB i think these are the drivers for it. I think that card is a gigabit nic. Tom
  19. We have just rebuilt our entire network so all the machines are freshly built, and the installers are the newest versions. I never trust sims but i'll trust you on this one . I will just see how it goes then and fingers crossed nothing goes wrong.
  20. Oh well, cheers for the help anyway not sure what i am going to do now, looks like it will have to be a trip round all the computers.
  21. so what did the /s from the command prompt actually do,becuase there was an icon in the bottom corner giving a percentage of how far it had installed. I let the pc install sims silently as normal, then i ran the updater with the /s command. It looked like it worked. so i then added them all together in one script to run on startup
  22. I have been looking at installing the update silent, and i noticed that running the exe with the /s will install this silent with out any user prompting. As i already have a script in auto it that runs the rest of the executables i have just added this to the end. It seems to run and install fine.
  23. when we started the summer it seems like we would have loads of time to sort everything out, but what we needed to do in one week, has took us 3 weeks. Got an email from a member of staff this morning asking if he can have his laptop back. We had told the staff that they can keep there laptops till next week and then we need them in for certain. So for the full summer he left it here and now wants it. With there being no software yet sorted, he has no chance, it will be funny seeing his face tomorrow when i tell him. Luckily i havnt had many staff in, i am off next week and i definately wont miss this place.
  24. I have added this to our logon vbs script so you can set it out like this.
  25. I decided to cable tie the keyboard and mice wires on the back of the pc, becuase the little darlings decided if the mouse or keyboard they were using wasnt up to scratch, they would swap them out with the next keyboard rather than come tell me and get me to get a new one. I find it works as they cant swap them and just have to live with it. Only problem is that some kids dont give up when its fasted on the back, they then pull the wire as hard as they can, i have had a few snap, and even on kid cut the wire with a pair of scissors. Have been looking at these as i have ran out of cable ties. http://www.lindy.com/uk/productfolder/04/40167/index.php I think we have used over 150 mice and keyboards this year, so not to bad. Although its not just the kids we have a member of staff who snapped all the keys of his laptop, now he is moaning he wants them fixed. I glue the lock on the bottom of the mice so they balls cant be removed. this was ok, appart from one time i accidentally glued the mouse ball as well on about 30 mice.
