This might not be the best / most straightforward way.... Crate specially restricted users, locked down via MDM settings, members of a class Team created specifically for the exam. Use the MDM to only allow access to Teams app. Teams Classes / Assignment to create private working space for exam resources. Teams assignments create secured folders for each member of the team in the Student Work document library. If more traditional file/folder / apps are required, sync the Student Work folder to the local machine and allow the additional apps to run via the MDM.

For a brief moment (just before iphone) it showed promise for being a distributed blogging and podcasting platform, all they needed to do was 1) make the code that ran the services on the server a bit more reliable 2)facilitate discovery and reverse proxy through icloud (as they did with other services back in the day) They could have given their users a viable alternative to Facebook.

Have I mentioned I hate USB-C? After a Windows update my laptop was running *very* slowly. Task Manager showed the CPU was in the range of 600Mhz- 1.09Ghz. I remembers seeing this on twitter, and decided to give it a whirl. Unplugged the USB-C lead and wham! 2.6Ghz. Several more iterations of troubleshooting, and I replaced the USB-C cable. Now stable at 1.8Ghx (the base speed) with frequent extended periods at 2Ghz+

Often schools encourage their staff to take part in marking the public examinations / tests to give them better insight into the process, and (hopefully) a better perspective on how to support their students in these tests/exams in the future. Therefore.. teachers expect to be able to do this on school devices... and thus it is our problem. Last time this crossed my desk I advised the teacher to ask for a test/validation from the provider and to see if they could do it without my intervention, and to pass me all the details if there was a problem. They went away happy so I assume it was fine. It's possible we've got an AppLocker rule somewhere that allows them to run the signed apps, and they just install it to local appdata (like chrome/Teams/Zoom etc)

Agree from a standing start 365 with InTune seems the best way forward. However there must be some legacy here... Where is the central email system? Who 'owns' that? How does the university currently ensure security compliance - where are they getting updates and anti-virus from?

Two paths there then: 1) for non-university devices, conditional access - and many of their devices will not meet the necessary specification required for secure access. 2) AutoPilot / Intune. Both of these will already be available to Central IT in AzureAD / Microsoft 365. Without knowing the size of the univeristy it is difficult to offer much more advice than has already been given. But it is likely that the systems you need will already have an "owner" and they will likely be defensive about getting this set up for you... depending who is sponsoring this initiative. If you have some academics on board... you will need to be at their beck and call 24/7 to fix perceived issues with the new more restrictive environment, until you and the support team are completely comfortable that you have got the onboarding and troubleshooting processes completely down. If a member of the senior management team or HoD or a tenured Professor starts throwing their toys out of the pram... that's the project dead.

Works fine since 5Ghz 40Mhz channels 2x2 802.11n. I mean wired will be better if your switches and cabling are good, but a single decent AP can handle it. Caveat: no roaming profiles, no editing on remote storage, absolutely no redirecting AppData, teachers have a strict working practice to avoid bottlenecks, OneDrive syncing only the files/folders needed for that course. Works best if there is a seating plan (or laptops are numbered and students generally use the same one each time they are in that room).

IMO For life-saving information (allergies, etc) then this might be appropriate, particularly if consent has been gained from the child/parent. For more general stuff (suffers from migraines etc) it would be hard to justify. However if informed consent has been given, then consent has been given. For the important stuff here, staff are made to sign a register that they have read the notes. The information is not posted on walls.

Interested to hear how many cores you have in your machines. We've found 2 core machines to be almost unusable.

...also I have found it extremely helpful that students can add teachers. The chat gets a bit out of order, and a student brings in a teacher... the matter is dealt with. If it wasn't that easy many misdemeanour's (or worse) might go unreported/dealt with. Make sure Storage Sense is enabled. It dehydrates the files as needed. We don't really bother with profile deletion. Occasionally we need to intervene by hand to clear up some space, but mostly 'it just works' (across 10 suites).

I've done a few cross forest migrations, but in 2022 I'd be tempted to sync each OU up to its own tenant, migrate all files and emails to 365, and then stand up a new domain at each site and sync the users back down to the new domains. Even then you might be able to get away with not creating on prem AD and instead move to Intune and Papercut

While this is not an ideal situation, it seems that it is normal practice in your organisation to treat email as transient communications, then as long as you are not deleting data you should be retaining, the deletion of emails about the subject shouldn't be a problem, since all emails get treated the same way. I would expect the worst that will happen is a sternly worded email from the ICO advising you to put in place and explicit data retention schedule. You would need to work with your DPO to make sure you have all your ducks lined up in a row, but you can only provide that which you have on record. It is a principal of GDPR that unless there is a legitimate reason to retain data you should not. So a blanket hold should not be necessary, and indeed is probably counter productive. That said, some communications definitely fall inside legislation requiring you to keep them for a period of time. However best practice would be for these communications to be stored in a system explicitly designed to hold records for those communication types. Many organisations have a very short email retention policy - not so much that email is to be retained for a period, but that after a short time email is to be deleted. All communications that must be retained should be archived in the appropriate system. It sounds very much like your organisation is operating somewhat like this, but may be lacking the formalised policies that would help evidence this as your standard practice.

Power supply and distribution is all less than 15 years old. It was a sudden change (in so far as we'd occasionally have under-voltage events, but never sustained, and we've never had an 'over-voltage' event before). It is ongoing; three days later we are still at 250V. Several of our UPS are about the same age as the building supply and distribution. Several are a lot younger. We are pretty used to what constitutes 'normal' for the site. However we've been up to 253.70V over the weekend. I'll ask around and maybe escalate to the LA's Facilities team.

Change the username (samaccountname, and UPN). Problem solved. The mystery, not so much.

eDiscovery in 365 returns recently deleted items, so deleting to get to avoid an already served SAR is not possible. The ICO would take a very dim view if it were discovered that attempts to delete data were made to avoid the SAR. Such an action violates one of the principals of GDPR: "...including protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage, using appropriate technical or organisational measures (‘integrity and confidentiality’).” ..And you would be unlawfully impeding the subject's right of access to data the organisation held at the time the request was made.

Large secondary. With six multimedia IT suites in heavy use. And six IT suites for generally purpose use. About 12 TB storage used by the multimedia courses. About 6 TB used by everything else T&L. About 8 TB for databases, email, and management. We were starting to struggle with space just before covid ended the debate around how to move to the cloud. Turns out “you just do it”. I know what you mean, but there are plenty of acceptable contrivances that, done well, could work. Narration by a Mind to build the universe, the use of avatars for scenes involving Minds. UPS's handling it fine. But they are complaining, and I don't recall seeing an over voltage incident lasting more than a few minutes in the last 20 years, so it's piqued my interest. DNO? Logger? What are these? Supply and troubleshooting of the big plant stuff isn't the forte of the teams I currently have access to.

Anyone have any experience with getting to the bottom of a site supply being over voltage? Our UPS’s are in a warning state, and we’ve had one computer PSU pop this morning (though that could be coincidence).
