What 3rd party AV / Security? To what are they connected? Try a different monitor / leads, try without lan/wifi. Try different keyboards mice. When you re-imaged them did you use the latest Windows release? Keeping the Windows install image at the current release is much more important in an Intune managed environment than on prior systems. Copyright licences for state schools in England - GOV.UK If it's been on broadcast TV it is (probably) fair game to be used on a whiteboard even if the whiteboard *could* copy the content... because the ERA licence allows you to *copy* too! The ERA Licence "...Show clips or copies of whole programmes from our Members’ output for educational purposes (this includes films). Use clips from our broadcasters’ websites and catch-up services. Any number of copies can be made and retained. Copies can be kept for as long as an ERA Licence is held. Share programmes or clips on VLEs and embed clips in presentations. Access recordings via an approved third party for example Clickview Exchange or eStream. Students can access ERA licensed material over a secure network on or off-site in the UK." If its not been on broadcast tv/radio, then its the MPLC , which is more restrictive (I don't think copying is allowed) but either way you absolutely are licenced to show it to a class. A digital display in a classroom should not be restricting you like that as the school has multiple licences to show most content.

I like how they don't say "don't enter my classroom when I am teaching", just don't interrupt the teaching. Good vibes tbh. They hold the class together and allows for us to get in and out. With really good teachers, I've even replaced 10m HDMI and USB looms (in trunking) while they just keep going. -

I didn't get involved in the deployment of it here, but I got the impression that Iiyama might have an "available on request" firmware update that just forces EDID 1.4, because I was pretty sure out boards used to be 4k/60 but when I was doing a general classroom IT spot check recently noticed that even with 8K Active Optical Cabling 4K/30 was what they were connecting at even on the best laptops.

I do feel that IIyama CleverTouch and BenQ have all issued firmware updates to solve HDCP problems in the 23-24 timeframe.

Well one of you is a global manufacturer of displays that connect to AMD devices, and one of you is not. I know what my expectation would be here. In other news I shall not be considering Philips monitors or touchscreen displays in future.

Hmm. Grok has definitely been trained on emails from MS SQL Server Support team. The tempdb thing... yep forgot we did that - it needs to start off big enough so you aren't continually pausing for it to grow during large queries (timetable changes and census were the common killers for us). I might need to go check on that on our server, its been rebuilt since I last went performance chasing.

By the way, @Benq_Chris's presence here, saying publicly what IIyama people has have told me during support/project calls gives me great confidence in their (Benq's) products even though I have never used them. (IIyama are great by the way). For us, having cabling that exceeds the capabilities of either end and the screens limiting themselves to 4K30 seems to be the secret sauce. As for out-of-warranty replacements, I expect we'll have some sort of limited refurb of a few rooms (because there's always something happening every few years) - and use the funding from that to replace a % of the boards - putting the old ones into storage as spares. If post-warranty failure rates climb, then we just need to put in a replacement programme that slightly out-paces the failure rate, installing (purchased quantity - %failure rate) and holding the remainder as swap-stock util EoFY, at which point we order new batch install and hold a % repeating ad infinitum.

If you had wired-in desktops and well installed VGA, yes it would typically be more consistent that how things are done right now, but not always. Cable quality, run length, and chipsets all could mess you up. I can't recall how many off colour, flickery images I've seen in the 20-ish years where VGA was king in classroom AV. It was generally more consistent in its failure modes. HDMI is much more prone to "working fine" until it suddenly doesn't, inconsistently. But HDMI is a much more reliable medium for mobile teacher devices than VGA every was. We are seeing a 0.2% failure* rate with HDMI (by helpdesk call volumes), with VGA it was closer to 1%, and swapping a HDMI is easier as we don't bother with inter-connects at the faceplates anymore. Of the rooms that have moved back to post 2021 usb-c docks, and post 2021 laptops, the failure rate is currently 0% (with insufficient data point to crow about that though). *failure = call IT for help, but often resolved before we get there, and we see one cable needing to be replaced roughly every 2-3 weeks - which is why we're hopeful that a return to usb-c docks with good quality USB-IF certified (but cheaper than 10m AOC) USBC cables is the future.

I've seen it where a hard reset (pin in the reset switch) of the laptop resolved the "too many hubs" error. Sometime just changing usb port on the laptop lets you work around it if a reboot isn't convenient. Anybody remember when end-user technical manuals were technical and had block diagrams for how things were really connected?

Our isp has had about 10 hours of downtime in the last 14 years (LGfL). We have a physical redundant link via 3rd party infrastructure back to the LGFL 'core' We also have a battery-backed 5g mi-fi router in the front office grab bag and key staff can get internet access and pivot to Teams Phone System if we (say) loose access to the site or we have an extended VOIP Platform outage. On cloud outages.. well its a very bad day if 365/Entra are unavailable, however staff and student devices cache recently used files, and we have seating plans and local AD, so we are partially insulated with respect to logging on and getting access to files folders and existing emails. On the MIS side - diversity is actually in our Business Continuity plan. Everything syncs back to local sims, but only a handful of people actually depend on sims on a daily basis. 3rd Parties add-ons are king, and they tend to be on diverse clouds themselves so even if one of the big cloud infrastructure providers are 'down' we still have access to critical data. And for what its worth, it takes about a day to bring up AD SIMS and the Cashless Catering System from backup to alternative offsite "server infrastructure"*. restoring a server to the existing infrastructure takes minutes (apart from that 6TB monster - but that's archival these days) *a beefy pc running hyper-v on a domestic 150/150 line, to occasionally prove it can be done. We all test our bare-metal DR plans, right?

is it making the expected changes in the registry? If not.. try applying those manually? Log a support call with Philips - the big display vendors do work with AMD/NVIDIA/Microsoft etc. Log a support call with your PC/Laptop vendor - again they will work with their supply chain so can escalate back to AMD. Also do you need Adrenalin? We have AMD integrated graphics and I'm not sure that we have it installed, and so far don't have problems... but we have (in the past) had board firmware updated to deal with changing HDCP behaviours from later versions of windows/drivers so maybe there is another path?

We run on a six core server. ParentPay has a support article for this (which you've probably read judging by the things you tried at the beginning of the thread) here is it for reference of others in the future: KB0012791 You can instead of those patches mentioned int he article (and your initial post) set up a maintenance plan: KB0013523 I got fed up one year and paid Microsoft to go splunking. Their recommendations were to put the database and log files on separate performant disk subsystems (but only because it is best practice - they observed that the underlying disk subsystem we had, was not breaching performance baselines) they also observed that the six cores with the 32gb of ram was not a constraint. However they did feel that the indexes were suboptimal (not much I was prepared to do about that), as was MaxDOP of 0 . Their recommendation here was to increase MaxDOP to 4 while setting "cost threshold for parallelism" to 25. We passed this over to capita, who then asked for our database, did some poking and then issued some "bespoke" patches. Things have been reasonably fine since. I have no idea whether they did touch MaxDOP in the end. It might be worth a go? A quick google for those two settings suggests these are reasonable starting figures when optimising on a busy-ish, small-ish database/server - and that ignoring the cost threshold figure is a common cause of performance issues where the MDOP value has been tweaked. EDIT: as per John's post, we had previously weighted the sql server vm to get higher priority on the vcores and make sure only a small number lightweight servers were sharing the host.

How long has the server been up? How big is TempDB? What recovery mode are you running? Are the log files able to grow quickly enough? Have you tried giving it a reboot? It clears out ram, and the tempdb, which can help. You might also want to look at tweaking TempDB autogrowth

The job's a never ending cycle. We control the laptop trolleys, their delivery and collection. So we know exactly which teacher was supervising when damage occours. Departments where damage occours a lot get rewarded with their own dedicated trolley ....and budgetary responsibility for repairs. We run the logistics for said repairs to ensure quality is maintained. Report upwards. Its not really an IT cost, its a strategic cost and needs to be managed at that level.

We're just using more power to brute force maths that was known for decades but impractical to use computationally. All of the research (and now products) of the last decade are as a result of the maths that GPUs are really really good at, at higher and higher cost. Any chip designed specifically for AI would actually be a damn good GPU because the maths is the same. The sort of improvement required for AIs to be more than job destroying autocomplete machines, requires fundamentally different maths running on fundamentally different hardware, and that is (at least) decades away.

I mean given a long enough timeline we'll get there. But IMO the "flaws" that cause the limitations in the current "AI" system are fundamental to the maths behind them. To brute force a solution (to compensate for these fundamental flaws) requires greater than exponential increases in power. In decades prior we could rely on getting better at making semiconductors. But now we are approaching the physical limits for how small things can be made, so the only things we can do (in the long run) is use more power, or change the fundamental maths.

VR, AI, Quantum Computing, Fusion. It all comes around again and again. This iteration of AI is just very good autocomplete, and has expanded its capabilities into non-text-based domains. Not to belittle the current AI, but basically they are just the neural nets of yore, with more maths that has only become viable to run thanks to modern GPUs. (and another two decades worth of comp-sci experience of playing around with them since they were last "the next big thing") I mean, can you imagine life with out auto-correct in Word? Thus it is becoming with the current AI stuff - but fundamentally its just predictions - not understanding. Also people seem to have forgotten about the inescapable effects once popularised as "chaos theory", and the reason that the "context window" and the very fundamentals of GPU architecture together ultimately doom the progress of the current implementation. Pretty sure we wont see the next breakthrough* until someone releases a paper on using Quantum Computing to build, train and run the next generation of models, that is practical at scale.
