I think you can do it with the vendor specific options on the scopes, but It's really outside my knowledge. Vlan's is the best way to go, keeping the VM's and desktops seperate has very few downsides

The only one in my regular toolkit missing from your list is Hijackthis, i think a few of my technicians use USBDView as well

You could use a login script on the OU that checks if the computer is/isn't a member of a specified group in AD. or depending on your computer naming convention do it by a part of the name. e.g. all our classroom computers have PRJ in the name.

How do you map the H: drive, is it the home drive in the AD account? or do you have another logon script that processes this? If it is the home drive in AD and no other script is deleting/re-creating at logon it should process before the redirection.

Hi All, We have done a small pilot of Office 2010 at an outcentre, installing it on all the staff PC's but not the IT suites or Classrooms. We are having some major issues however with the staff that roam between machines with the different versions on, this affects quite a few people as we have teachers who work at multiple sites. Setup Info: Staff Use Roaming Profiles All Computers are Win XP Office Versions are Professional 2003 and 2010 Exchange Server is 2003 So far we have Staff member with outlook working on 2003 logs on to a 2010 machine outlook works. When they go back to a machines with 2003 installed they then get the message unable to open your default e-mail folders; your profile is not configured The outlook profile is there, but from mail in control panel you are unable to edit it and the users name does not show up in the box below server name. So far all we can do to get working in 2003 is either a new outlook profile or delete and re-create. However the problem comes back as soon as they log on/off a machines with outlook 2010. Any help you can give would be great as this is currently dring about 30 people mad and we need to resolve this before the first full phase of rollout can take place. Unfortunately with 1200 machinhes we need to phase the rollout over a few months to get staff trained up etc.

I have approx 350 Thin Clients in our college, running VDI. The thin client infrastructure was installed and is supported by Cutter Project who are fantastic and couldn't be anymore helpful! the vmware was supplied by another party who struggled to make it work initially but we have changed supplier and now all works a treat! Would suggest it's possibly more of a GPO issue, have you got "Wait for Network at computer startup" enabled somewhere on the computers OU's if not give it a go.

Interesting, you learn something new every day. After trying Windows Key and = to zoom in with magnifier, i found that Windows Key and - zooms back out then i found that you can use the Plus and minus keys from the number pad in combination with the windows key to zoom in and out too. I didn't get anything out of Windows and Delete, not sure what you found there ? Windows and Home appears to minimise all but the active window, and then the reverse, a little like shaking the window, but with a reverse feature. Windows key plus number may be useful, but i've got 14 things pinned on my taskbar, how do i access number 11 etc?? Also found if you do Windows Plus arrow keys you can move windows about, snapping them to the side etc, altho if you use Down arrow it minimizes and your focus changes to the next window with no obvious key to reverse! Windows and Tab, now thats funky!

Being part way through a VDI roll out I do find your post interesting, and agree that sometimes the Server room power consumption calculations are a bit shoddy. however you have missed that the expected lifecycle of a thin client terminal far exceeds that of a desktop PC, meaning less frequent cases of sending stuff to be WEEEcycled, also as a thin client has less parts even when it is WEEEcycled there is going to be less material going to landfill etc. there is also less materials and processes used in the production, again lowering the carbon footprint. although it may be nigh on impossible to calculate this benefit it is still there. I also find your mixture of terms like thin client, VDI and The cloud to add confusion to the debate

If you look at the 2900 series they have 2x X4 ports on the back and come with short stacking cables giving you a 10Gb backbone with 1Gb to desktop, you can also use cx4 to link to the core but i also thing there is a 10gb fibre connection available. We have 2610's 2810's 2600's and 2900's all in use and all great switches we also have a 5012 core switch Skr

If your looking at virtualising the exsisting you're really going to want the HA features and multiple hosts to remove the single point of failure. This will require the 3i licences and ideally VCentre Manager to put together, the foundation pack is really the way to go although its worth compaing the edu price offer on individual licensing. Do you already have a SAN? As said before VMWare view is for desktop virtualisation wether thin client or remote, in the foundation pack you can get a bundle with the VC included which may let you save money Thinapp is an easy way of packaging applications for delivery to the desktop wether physical or virtual, it packages apps to 1 exe all you need to do is copy the file to the Pc and add a shortcut to the start menu. Pretty dangerous in the wrong hands, all sorts of software could come into the network as a single exe. skr

I've been looking quite a lot at iSCSI Sans recently, and due to what i've inherited here with build your own storage arrays which perform badly and can't get any support I haven't considered build your own. I'm getting towards placing an order for the Sun 7210 11.4Tb model, the great thing is that the software platform is the same across all the 7000 series so the 7110 will be just as easy to configure. there is a VMWare download of a demo on the sun it uses 50mb VMDK files to simulate the storage array but you can get the hang of the config and the settings, I also managed to map a volume and copy data etc no problems. The other really good offering i found was the Dell Equalogix but i can get much more capacity on Sun for around the same price. Thin provisioning and no feature licensing are 2 of my other draws to these models. snapshot etc are all included too! Skr

Is your HBA FC? if so get a HP Ultrium 960 series external FC, will do 400/800gb good and fast. We have a robotic library and get around 3 tapes full every night. Skr

I would look at probably a 2gb backbone, use 2fibres to the new building into one 48port then 2x1g to each of the other 2 switches make sure the middle switch with the fibre is the hub for all three though to reduce bottle necks. you get the best of both worlds, resillient link(ish) and good performance. We have this setup over a much bigger system and no problems with the network traffic. Skr

If you'r going to virtualise you would really want to go over a minimum of 2 servers for redundancy, HP dl380's 16Gb Ram and 2x146gb Hdd's ideally you would want and really the Qlogic iSCSI HBA + 4 port nic Cards in each server. I would get maybe 3x servers, forget virtualising and put your storage on a SAN/NAS combined device like the Sun StorageTek 7110 2Tb version You can use your old servers once migrated with the free vmware hypervisor to put a few test Os's on and maybe some low used production servers, like a 2nd DC or AV management server. It is good to seperate out roles, but in your size of environment impractical. I'm currently struggling with the costs of doing some virtualisation and the licensing kills it if you want reasonabl performance and some HA features Skr

Diskeeper is stonking, but can be pricy. one to note, perhaps more for PC's which have had RAM upgrades is PageDefrag from sysinternals I've seen defraggler recentl;y and that looks ok too

You may be able to do it in the local security policy Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Local Security policy not 100% sure though.

You can run 2 dhcp servers on a network no problems, we've got 2 already, all you need to do is turn on conflict detection attempts, there is an MSKB article but it was a while ago i did it. I'm considering adding a third because if a fibre link goes down (big yellow digger issue) people don't get addresses and cant access local servers, going to pur a DC and DNS up there too.

Turned out Id got a OU where is should have had a CN in the bindings, couldn't see the wood for the trees

Joe is a diamond, i give him grief on a daily basis prices needed for this and that, orders for loads of stuff. Everything arrives, sometimes hand delivered, always on time. The reason CP get most of my business is they are damn hot on prices, I've probably stretched the budget by 10% with the savings i've made on bits and pieces that are bought regularly compared to the supplier that was in use before i started. And i gave them Plenty of chances. Oh and Simons alright too, even if he does sound like he's eating the phone mouthpiece when you talk to him! LOL Catch u later G
