Ben, Do you have admin rights on the domain? Is the HyperV host a domain member? The DC's local admin password, also known as directory services restore mode ... TBH there are many ways of cracking that, but wouldn't worry unless you have an AD conniption. Hirens or Etc will work on the hyperV. If the HyperV host is a domain member, then you can reset the local admin password either remotely or by logging on locally with a domain admin account. The only other real option with the ML310 is to install a 2nd copy of windows onto the disks (preferably in a second partition) and then you can do the sticky keys hack to the other disk, and boot back off it to sort the password.

Hi, Does anybody know anything about configuring netflow/sflow/? on HP Procurve switches? I've got a piece of software (statseeker) that can recieve the flows, what i want to pick up is all the traffic to/from our firewall. Our ISP (JANET) has been in touch, and provided flow information that we have some malware trying to communicate externally, and i've been arguing with the firewall logs for an hour trying to find it. If i had the flow information i could identify the internal source IP very quickly and isolate it from the network. Ta Skr

I have a veeam backup essentials licence and I have a much bigger environment. You only need to license the hosts you back up from. We backup approx 6.5tb of vm's in a 6hour window each night. Backing up from 3 hosts using 2 veeam proxys/and repositories. My next mission is to migrate file share data from cifs shares on a san/nas to 2012vms primarily so I can get the veeam benefits for backup. Also dedupe on 2012 rocks. I did a 900gb test server of our student home folders and got 30% saving of space.

We don't charge departments yet. Individuals with excessive use are challenged. Students are charged but get an initial £10 per academic year.

Very difficult to quantify as i have been requesting something to monitor the server room power draw for some time. We virtualised main systems 4 years ago, and now are running 78VM's on 3 hosts plus about 10/12 Physical Servers. I think that we would have to be running maybe 50 physical servers if we hadn't virtualised. I have been virtualising a few more recently as the hardware became end of life, and alongisde moving some kit to a second server room for DR purposes i am going to be able to take out a whole 42 rack. and still have space in the other racks. (a lot of rack space is taken up with VDI and storage systems) The energy saving benefits are high, but the true benefit is in administration and availability. Using VM's allows us to have total role seperation so if a VM goes pearshaped it only affects one role, Hosts can be maintained without downtime etc. And new servers/roles can be deployed in minutes not days.

Just tell her she has 7 days to comply or you will remotely disable it. Failing that just write it off and wash your hands. Make sure it cannot connect in remotely.

We are using a Fortinet firewall and Smoothwall. I originally put the fortinet in to replace a bloxx solution, but quickly found out that the filtering was not it's best feature. Then in a rush we put smoothwall in as it was cheaper than renewing Bloxx. quite like the smoothwall though

We're using mimecast hosted solution, it's ok. I prefer hosted as don't see the need to blockup my internet pipe with spam email coming through to get scanned. I know the majority never make it past DNS blacklists, but some still have to be checked.

Sounds to me like some dodgy browser addin/BHO. Would suggest running malware bytes or hijackthis on it.

Richard, The PS you have found is to set a per mailbox Safe/Blocked Sender, this is not the same as whitelsiting them into exchange, as it is processing them at the point of the mailbox, not at the message transfer. To be honest with you .. i wouldn't whitelist the parents address, i can see the point of why ... but with all the sender spoofing, and hotmail hacks that go around I think you would be better off still having mails spam scanned etc even if they do come from a known address.

It really depends on the permissions you need to get out at the end of it. If the folder/permissions structure is simple wipe it off, copy the files and then reset it. if complex you need to look at it closer You don't need to create the folder structure under the redirected path ... we use \\Servername\Redirected$\%USERNAME%\... and all i did was create the redirect$ folder/share and add appropriate permissions. logging on as the user creates the folders under there. then copy the data in. If you are using new/different usernames on the new AD, scripting a copy could be problematic unless you do a CSV with the Old username and new username and some clever scripting

As with all things IT there are many options available to you. DFS may well be a quick win, it depends on how your sites are spread out/setup. You don't mention what Comms you have between sites, but when i see lots of small sites what springs to mind is looking into cloud/hosted/COLO solutions. If you are already using the internet connections at your sites to create VPN's to the site housing the servers why not move that equipment to a datacentre where they have all the power/connection resilliencey in place, and your just having a little space in a rack for your kit. Any solution like this is of course budget dependant, but it could work out better than a siginificant capital outlay to put the redundancies in to pay the fees. No solution is fit all ... look at the options and decide what works best for you. Any resilliency is allways a balance of budget vs availability, and how many of the 'What If' situations you want to cover. Good Luck Skr

Agreed Very Weird. Have you got anything odd connected that may be also grabbing that IP? Last time I saw similar we had a wireless AP and a router 'sharing' and IP address. What switches do you have, do you have management access to them (telnet ssh etc) You could do a MAC trace through the switches and see where the device 00-1a-70-8d-ae-74 is connected, and therefore what it is. According to Wireshark · OUI Lookup Tool it is a Cisco/Linksys Device

Ok, So what exists between your client computers and the router? Did you say that you can't get a traceroute to a public internet address? (8.8.8.8 for example)

All, Does anyone know how i can migrate a single scope from a 2003 server at one of my remote locations onto my main DHCP server? I know how to do a full server migration, but i have never imported just a single scope, I'm very mindful of not wanting to accidentally delete all my other scopes and cause total chaos. The IP config and Routing table all look brilliant. Do you get ping response from the gateway?

/23 is just a supernet of 2 class C scopes joined together it should be no problem at all.

I would go spare, unless i had specifically told them to bodge it and scarper. Proper Structured calbing terminates at Panels and should be tested as such, the standards then allow for up to 10Mts total of "Fly/Patch lead" at the respective ends.

The switch(s) that does the routing between the VLAN's needs to be L3, the others are fine at L2, but if you want things like VOIP vlan that will need priority get L3. My favourites are HP Procurve (anything with a 2 at the start of the model number)

So, What is the default gateway being recieved by clients? Can you paste and ipconfig from a host which does work and a host which doesn't prefereably alongside the results of route print P.S. I am using subnet mask of 255.255.254.0 on a couple of VLAN's so know it works fine

That really is a long way down the line. What happens if you pathping to the smoothwall?
