Overview

We offer our AD directory over LDAP and let the linux boxes authenticate against that for general users. For AD, we have to manually add the users to a group on the server they want to connect to. After that, PAM takes care of the rest. We don't have any Samba shares offered to the public on our linux boxes, so I'm not sure if this applies to your environment.

Hi everyone, Has anyone had a stab at getting Linux machines connected to Active Directory? I installed Likewise Open today which is working pretty well, but had a lot of heavy config to do to get it to connect to our corporate network in the office. What (if anything) do other people do?

I run an ubuntu server hosting squid at work and a OpenBSD pf firewall to seperate the wireless network from the curriculum network so that the students can hook up their insecure laptops to the school network.

Does FreeBSD count??

I'm on Ubuntu. Started on Mandrake, had a brief fling on Linspire then Ubuntu. Does everything I need and more. Been on broadband now for about 6 years with no anti-virus software. Try doing that on Windows :-)

I use 2 distros/ Fedora 8 (moving to 9) and Ubuntu - even my partner can use it! Fedora is great for Web Server stuff - tried it with Ubuntu but it wasnt as easy as Fedora..

Linux mint looks alot like Suse to me.

For speed on old hardware I like SAM Linux with its light(ish) XFCE window manager http://sam.hipsurfer.com/ and most stuff works out of the box such as Flash and ndis wrapper. Make yourself a nice youtube viewing machine. BBC iplayer works good too. Not for the uber Freedom lovers out there. Although just looked at the MINT site and the XFCE edition or FluxBox edition look very interesting. INSERT linux that came with ultimate boot CD was fast as hell and got me out of a few scrapes but mite try BartPE for this also. But they took it out!!!!! No idea why.

Have you tried Linux Mint. It's a tweaked Ubuntu for Desktops. http://linuxmint.com/

I occasionally install ubuntu, then feel it doesn't fulfil my needs and lose it again Getting a Laptop for my general use soon, so my desktop will become a perminant linux box. Any suggestions on distro

So, I spend the day compiling Squid to go with DansGuardian as the version I use is missing a feature needed to pass ntlm usernames to the log. 3.0 is missing the feature too \o/ Now compiling 2.6

I don't use linux as much as i used to, but i will be getting back into it shortly
