Morning Folks!

Currently having an issue on school site where students are unable to add network printer drivers. It always requires an admin password. When I used to be a student at the school it used to be when a user logged on, the printer drivers would be pushed down to the computer and install so when they went to devices and printers (Or back in the day XP Printers and Faxes) the printer drivers were installed and the user could print with no issue. I believe ever since the school moved over to Windows 7. This has stopped working. I am new to networking and wish to get this sorted. Any ideas why this isn't working?

Use Print management to deploy using group policy OR add the printers using the group policy preference. Let us know if this makes sense or not to you. The drivers should install automatically providing you have the right driver for the right OS, such as x86(32bit) or x64(64bit). Edited by Patrick

I had to use: Computer Config>Policies>Admin Templates>Printers>Point and Print Restrictions

When installing/updating drivers: Do not show warning or elevation prompt. I've got a couple of the other options there changed, too (made sense at the time).

Plus deployment through GPP. You'll need to set the GPOs on the appropriate server.

This might be a bit much for you at the moment. I appreciate that you are having issues with your printing but without knowing what server you are working on or having a basic idea what settings you are changing you could end up doing more damage. I suggest having a good read up on basic networking functions, particularly servers.

Find your domain controller and have a look around and learn the systems and how they work before changing anything.

The problem is I have come from a role that was mainly Hardware and software. Networking is all new to me, although I got a Distinction in college I have forgotten so much. What book would you recommend me reading to get me back on track? I am currently learning the network infrastructure but it is taking a while :(

Have you been left in charge of the network all of a sudden or something? Try and make sense of the fix LeMarchand has mentioned. There are a number of guides around on deploying printers using group policy, have a google around. Spiceworks is good community to find guides and how-to's but it is not focused on the education sector. If you are then happy that your printers are deployed (they might already be) then apply the point and print restrictions settings, that will fix your driver problem, as long as you have the right driver(64bit for 64bit OS).

Stick with it mate, research as much as you can before changing anything. We all start somewhere and we all need help. No one know's everything!

Point and print restrictions as LeMarchand says.

On your domain controller:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/cc753269.aspx

Dont worry, you will soon pick it up. I found Uni taught me the theory of things but its completely useless when you actually get a job and get given a switch or server.

What you need to do is get a old machine or virtualbox and install Windows Server 2008 R2 (I believe it would be easier to learn on) and anothe machine/virtual with windows 7.

Run dcpromo on the server box and then join the win 7 box to it.

Now play, create users and organisational units, OU's (Folders), once youve done that get into the group policy editor and see that your OU's are in there.

Now create some policy's and see what happens. Honestly, its the best way to learn.

The best way to test the network is to try and break it. If you can then everyone else can. When i built our new domain, before installing it to everyone i got the apprentice to sit for a day trying every way he could to break it. I then did the same.

Youtube things like "server 2008 r2 setup". Tons of good stuff.

The first thing to do now though if your on your own is check your backups. Learn how they work and where they go. Even try to restore a document. One of the most important things as you probably know. Dont want to make it into the new as the school that lost all of its data.
