Zoom7000 Posted April 10, 2018 Posted April 10, 2018 Ever since I set up my Windows Server 2016 domain with Windows 10 clients and WSUS, Windows Updates has failed to install the "201X-XX Cumulative Update" every single month. The most recent update to fail is "2018-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4088776)". Prior to that 2018-02 failed, 2018-01, 2017-12 etc. It'll try to install the update to 100% and then fail with "We couldn’t complete the updates, Undoing changes" and then reboots twice before booting back into Windows. I don't know where to check as to why this is failing. However, it gives an error code of 0x800f0922 for the most recent failure (KB4088776). Any idea what I can do to stop these failures? How can I investigate what the root cause of the continuing error is? I've used the Get-WindowsUpdateLog command to generate a WindowsUpdate.log but it doesn't tell me anything about why it is failing to install every month. 1
TwistedHelixis Posted April 10, 2018 Posted April 10, 2018 Not sure if this helps but I had the updates failing on my Windows 10 laptops and can only get them to update if I uninstall Office, after which all updates install just fine.
Chuckster Posted April 10, 2018 Posted April 10, 2018 Have you considered stopping the Windows Update service and then deleting all the contents within C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, to see if that helps resolve the issue?
angrycomputingteacher Posted April 10, 2018 Posted April 10, 2018 The same happens to my Server 2016. However, I'm not using WSUS.
Zoom7000 Posted April 10, 2018 Author Posted April 10, 2018 (edited) Have you considered stopping the Windows Update service and then deleting all the contents within C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, to see if that helps resolve the issue? The reason I am assuming it's not this is because it's been happening on all PCs since September 2017, but, I rebuilt all PCs last week with a brand new baseline Windows 10 (1079) image with no customisations or anything removed. So, the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder should be empty on most PCs. Update: Regardless, I just tried this and tried to reinstall the update and it failed again. xlandhenry Posted April 11, 2018 Posted April 11, 2018 Have you tried installing the update directly from Windows Update?
Zoom7000 Posted April 11, 2018 Author Posted April 11, 2018 Have you tried installing the update directly from Windows Update? Yup, manually downloaded the update from the Microsoft Catalog and it failed.
xlandhenry Posted April 11, 2018 Posted April 11, 2018 As you mentioned you tried it on clean install of the official image I suspect it could be a device model specific issue. Are the manufacture firmware and drivers up to date?
Zoom7000 Posted April 11, 2018 Author Posted April 11, 2018 As you mentioned you tried it on clean install of the official image I suspect it could be a device model specific issue. Are the manufacture firmware and drivers up to date? All up to date, but it's affecting all PCs, regardless of model. I have the following: Dell Optiplex 9030 AIO Dell Optiplex 7440 AIO Lenovo ThinkCenter (Can't remember the model!) RM ONE RM Mobile ONE All PCs are failing to install any cumulative updates on a monthly basis.
themightymrp Posted April 11, 2018 Posted April 11, 2018 Have you tried enabling the .Net Framework on the machine and then trying the update again? Apparently not having it 'might' cause that error code: https://ugetfix.com/ask/how-to-fix-windows-10-update-error-code-0x800f0922/
Zoom7000 Posted April 11, 2018 Author Posted April 11, 2018 So, I think I may have fixed this... But I'm not happy with the fix! Based on the advice here, I disabled the App Readiness service to speed up login times. This was great and brought our login times down considerably. However, it seems as though this is what has killed the updates. I just tested starting the service on 2 PCs that were previously failing to update and as soon as I switched the service back on, the update installed fine. So, in the interim, it looks as though that is the fix. However, is there a way to get the updates to work with App Readiness switched off, so that updates can work and login times are as short as possible.
