Recommend an SSD for home PC

Intel for reliability or Crucial M4 for performance \ price. Haven't used Samsung yet but I remember the early reviews being very positive in terms of performance.

 

Avoid OCZ like the plague, too many horror stories.

I have a Samsung 830 256gb SSD and it's lightening fast, however the 840 pro was released recently is meant to be much faster. Good solid stable drives.

I have got a Corsair Force GT 120GB in my PC at home and at work and they fly, BIOS and RAID Card add-in boards take longer to get through than Windows! Will be very sad if they are stopping making them as they are great bits of kit.

I must be looking at the wrong thing then! So the "Read 480MB/s Write 380MB/s" is not something to go by? The write speed seemed higher then some others...

Those IOPS figures are abysmal - and IOPS are what make SSDs so snappy, more important than sequential read/writes IMHO.

 

For comparison, the Samsung 840 Pro 128Gb is at 97k/90k read/write IOPS. That's an order of magnitude faster.

I fitted a 64gb SSD to the missus' Vostro 1000 18 months ago...can't fault it. Silent, stupidly rapid, better battery life, and resistant to taking a baby induced header to the floor. Can't recall the make though..

Regarding IOPS - you would still see a significant speed increase with those numbers. A normal hard disk will max out at about 100 IOPs.

Thanks everyone, looks like the Samsung 128GB 840 Pro Series SSD is a clear winner. A little more then I wanted to pay, was hoping for one around the £80 mark, but from what everyone says about the quality of Samsung, along with the benchmark figures, I think throwing an extra £30 to it will be worth it long term. You can always get the standard 840 120Gb if you want to save some pennies, but the 840 Pro does look nicer. A decent SSD will last you forever and is the one component that you will miss when moving to other machines
