[sccm 2012] Testing SCCM 2012 - Clients booting to WinPE automatically

Hello Edugeek!

 

We're testing the power of SCCM 2012 - EP installed and operational, Adobe updates going out after being added via SCUP 2011, WSUS updates working fine etc...

 

So, I thought I'd continue on my windows-noob adventure and get some OS's deployed via WDS, see how it compares to FOG. Anyways, after following the instructions, I notices while fixing a student's machine, that it was trying to go to the SCCM PXE boot environment, despite the fact that I haven't redirected the clients to look for the new server in DHCP?! I checked the scope options, still pointing at our Fog server?!

 

Any ideas why that's happened? How can I stop it!!

Do you mean that it was automatically booting into PXE without F12? This will be the WDS from your SCCM server. Try looking at the settings within WDS and see what is selected. Make sure that the server is set to respond to F12, you could also set this to require authorisation from administrator.

 

If you want to keep both servers running and responding, you can set the respond time for the sccm server to 5 seconds.

Thanks deano. I had a quick look around the internet, turns out that the NIC sends a broadcast request out as soon as it boots, to find any PXE signals. It's obviously seeing the SCCM server's response before it checks the DHCP details to point it at our fog server!

 

Just freaked me out a bit, didn't want our servers to image themselves with Windows 7 Pro the next time they booted without me knowing!
