Afternoon

 

It's new server time and I see Dell now offer SSDs on their servers. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on running the new CMIS server on a well spec'd server on SSDs?

I can't help but think the repetitive read/write cycles of a database on an SSD would be a dangerous occupation...

Zag was/has built a SSD based file server (ok not CMIS), but same kind of discussions.

 

Not seen any updates recently, but might be worth poking him to see how it's going?

I thought about the read/write cycles. Reading doesn't count it's "just" writing that counts towards any degradation and these are enterprise class SSDs at £600 a go so i'm guessing that it would be ok for some period of time, they only have to last 4 years or so I suppose.

I wouldn't bother, just chuck some 15k SAS in there personally if all your running is Facility on it.

 

Facility Server (running Facility Administration, SQL Server & ePortal)

Hardware

Minimum Specification

2x Intel Xeon Quad core CPU or AMD equivalent

8GB ECC RAM

2x 10/15k SAS drives in RAID 1 for OS

3x 15k SAS drives in RAID 5 for Data

 

Minimum spec for 1000+ users.
