[wds] Got an oddity with screen resolution on WDS

Morning chaps.

 

I'm trying to PXE boot into WDS to use windows PE to run a checkdsk on a borked install of XP, but i've got a problem...

 

When you press f12 to achieve a network boot it appears to load the WDS boot image but as soon as it leaves the 'loading WDSBNP' white text on black screen it then goes black and the monitor displays the 'input out of range'. I can't find out how to force a specific resolution at that point.

 

I'm confused as it was working a week ago!

I know it would seem like it shouldn't matter, but have you tried a different monitor? For some goofy reason I've had monitors (one in my basement) just one day decide to stop showing a certain display ranges.

Yeah... tried it with a 17" GNR, a 14" LG, a 17" Acer and a 19" widescreen Benq. same result it appears to be setting the frequency to 87Hz.

have you tried just booting WinPe off a USB stick or DVD?

Yup... our win PE version on a stick works fine, and I can do what need to do at the moment - but I won't be able to use that to deploy 800 workstations of windows 7 in the summer, hence needing to work out wtf is going on with the pxe response!

The WinPE version on a stick that works, is that based off of the same WIM that you boot over the network from? Do you have drivers imported into WDS? What I'm thinking is the stick version works since it is using a default MS display driver while the network boot one pulls a display driver from the deployment server. Of course this is entirely tossed out the window if you don't have drivers imported into the deployment server or you inject them into the WIM you're stick booting off.
