It entirely depends on whether you get a good back-and-forth going.

 

If you do, then it's a conversation regardless of the medium.

Maybe Americans use that word to describe 'emails' more than 'email'.

Well the dictionaries I have looked in (yes I am that sad) define a conversation as being oral communication...

I think the word "conversation" was used to refer specifically to the way related emails are threaded together.

 

An English (British) option of "natter" would be appreciated though.
