I have an elderly relative who lives a 5hr dive away (so I'm not about to drive down to sort this out on site) who has an Acer + touchscreen running W7 HP that he wants to upgrade to W8 Pro. (Well, he was sold W8 Pro).

If he runs the Upgrade Assistant it flags up a few programs that won't work, but when he runs the in place upgrade it only offers to save personal files. If this is followed through regardless it seems to do it's stuff until it reboots, when it then decides that it doesn't want to install W8 after all and reverts itself back to W7 HP.

Both x64 versions, plenty of spare disK space on both disks (no options to specify one disk or t'other anyway).

Anybody got any ideas what the problem is? I don't think he's up to saving his docs and trying to install by booting from the disc.

I had to remove some one the programs on the "get update from website" list even after upgrading.

I also had to run the windows 8 system readiness package (not sure where I found that off the top of my head)
