synaesthesia Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 You only hear the bad, not the good. My Sky connection is solid and the people I speak to have been brilliant when required. A level of service I haven't had since Nildram & Pipex before they were thoroughly broken (bought out and commercialised). And it's not always their fault - BT still are responsible for a majority of the gubbins inbetween regardless if you're LLU or not.
Danp Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 I love my Sky adsl, great speeds, only dropped out once for about 30 mins, boggo wireless router covers all the area I need it to, quite often have 6 devices running from it, Netflix etc and it just works. 1
elsiegee40 Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 @elsiegee40 I've thought about the fibre upgrade as well. Once it happens, any chance you can let me know what it is like I certainly will. Remind me if I forget (Hopefully no post won't be because I've got no broadband on December 11th!) 1
mattlynch Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 (edited) i have had sky fibre for about a month now, speeds are fantastic, consistent 38 down 10 up! would recommend to anyone who can get it also would recommend using sky chat for problems/queries, had a couple of questions about install ect and they where very helpful Edited November 28, 2012 by mattlynch add 2
cookie_monster Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 Well the deal is done Jon so I'll hope to have a better story than yours. Thanks for the reply though it's good to hear all sides but I don't think it can be much worse that what I've received from BT and the Homehub 2 Cheers.
Steven_Cleaver Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 To be honest been on sky for about seven years and it has been an excellent Service had the router fail dropping off occassionally but replaced in 48 hours and a problem with the line once for about half a day which turned out to be a BT problem but sky called these for me and have never had an Engineer from BT out so fast.
cookie_monster Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 Wow my Sky BB has only been connected for an hour but I can tell a difference already, pages resolve at least twice as fast as they did on BT which is interesting. Did everyone change the default admin password straight away, I take it Sky don't make a fuss about that?

Did everyone change the default admin password straight away, I take it Sky don't make a fuss about that? That is exactly what happened here. BT's 0.8 Meg that dropped at least once a day became stable 3.5 Meg just by switching. I'm not sure why I fought with BT for so long! I changed the admin and wifi passwords straight away. 1

I would ALWAYS advise you change your router password as well as your wireless SSID and its password. 1

Michael Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Newer Sky and Virgin routers are configured pretty securely using WPA/WPA2, but you'll find there's a whole bunch of customers with older routers still using WEP. I come across this all the time.
edutech4schools Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I use my own router on my Sky Broadband. I just asked them for the username and password via the webchat and they gave it to me. I did tell them that I worked in IT Support and deal with ASDL lines at work, so I did now what I was doing! Did the same for me but when I phoned with an issue they refused to help as their computer screen listed non standard device.
Devontechie Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Did the same for me but when I phoned with an issue they refused to help as their computer screen listed non standard device. I got told that I need to keep hold of the Sky Router and connect it up if I contact Sky support
edutech4schools Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Ahhh I dumped a different firmware on the box.
ZeroHour Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Yeh I usually do as well just checking Sky didn't make a fuss about it Sky have remote access built in for firmware updates etc so changing it doesnt effect them. Sadly I think its too late to say this now but I would never move my line away from BT after hearing about the nightmare it can be to move back to BT although its possibly a lot better then it was. Sky is truly unlimited so there is no throttling or limits without any hidden terms. Although my sky broadband has been good for years lately there have been a lot of issues but I believe my exchange is overloaded currently.
cookie_monster Posted December 9, 2012 Author Posted December 9, 2012 Well so far I'm getting 13Mb down and 900kbps up and the annoying line noise (hiss) on the phone line that BT couldn't sort has gone so I'm pretty happy with that tbh
elsiegee40 Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) Upgrade to fibre tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed! Sadly I think its too late to say this now but I would never move my line away from BT after hearing about the nightmare it can be to move back to BT although its possibly a lot better then it was. I have no desire to revert to BT whatsoever. Dumping them completely was the best thing we ever did! Edited December 9, 2012 by elsiegee40
cookie_monster Posted December 9, 2012 Author Posted December 9, 2012 zooooooooooooooooooooooom......well hopefully
Devontechie Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Upgrade to fibre tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed! Hopefully all goes well for you.
elsiegee40 Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! It's done :) :) 3.8 bps down/1.4 mbps up has gone to 37.74 mbps down/8.4 mbps up by switching to fibre. Happy bunny :)
captaincharisma Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 (edited) Does anyone know if you can get fibre installed into a flat? or would it mean the whole block would need upgrading first? Edited December 10, 2012 by captaincharisma
elsiegee40 Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 (edited) Does anyone know if you can get fibre installed into a flat? or would it mean the whole block would need upgrading first? They can just do the one flat. The change is made at the box in the road to switch you over to fibre and then it runs on copper from there to the master phone socket in your flat. The engineer (from BT connect) changed the faceplate on our master socket and plugged in a modem. That connects by ethernet cable to a separate router. I was told I could remove all the ADSL filters we use. Edited December 10, 2012 by elsiegee40 1
captaincharisma Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Looks like I know what I want for Christmas then!

captaincharisma Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Fibre gets installed 21st Jan....It is so exciting!
