Free Video Editing Software?

Is there any GOOD Free Video Editing software (Not Windows Movie Maker). If there were then I could install in my computer lab. I would hate to buy a ton of licencse's if there was something free. Kind of like how Open Office is free.

Not saying it's right, but some places have expensive software because they think it is expected of them or for the sake of their reputation to show off.

 

Lightworks has been getting a push around here as a professional equivalent, not used myself yet.

VLMC - it's still a buggy, barely useable alpha unfortunately.

VideoLAN did announce a video editing tool, but I don't think it's made it out of alpha yet.

 

Lightworks (which I'd never heard of until today) on first glance does look like a pretty full-featured NLE. The free version does lack a lot of import/export formats, and any titling features, but if that's all it's missing, it could well be worth looking at. It'd have a massive learning curve though, and I've seen staff and pupils have trouble with iMovie which is far easier to pick up with little to no experience than a full-on NLE...

 

In response to the OP's question, I can't think of any good cheap/free editors that are worth using. That said, I've not looked into that level of editor for a while...!

It's quite high-end though, so not sure about school use.

No. No there is not. Lightworks looks nice, but last time I tried it (about 6 months ago) it was buggy as hell in a network environment. One day, maybe, but not yet. YMMV.

 

WeVideo.com is alright, entirely online (so useful if you're setting homework, they can carry on at home) but isn't much more advanced than WMM tbh.

 

This is the one hole in an otherwise stellar line up of FOSS software that works better than anything paid -we have VLC, 7Zip, IrfanView, Notepad++, paint.net, but nothing for video editing. If anyone could prove me wrong I would be delighted.

Awhile ago I took a brief look at the Serif starter version of MoviePlus. It looks good and runs well, but cant really remember if it had more features than moviemaker though. Might be worth taking a look at.

 

As its free it doesnt support all video codecs. Think its £5 per pc for the codec pack.

I also looked into this a while back and had no luck finding anything that worked. Be good to be proven wrong, though.

Anyone considered blender? It has a full built in video editor, transitions/slide blahblahblah. Know it's not really considered for video editing, more than 3D creations but hey Only a thought.

Dual-botting into an entire Linux infrastructure just for Year 8 ICT is, I fear, overkill although hopefully if there is a lively ecosystem of Linux applications, it's only a matter of time before someone converts one over to our Windows-themed circle of hell...

kdenlive are on the verge of releasing a new version. It's a multitrack editor (looks similar to Prem Elements) and apparently (!!) can be 'fixed' to run in Windows. I believe Nixie Pixel has a youtube vid on how to do it - if you feel inclined. Edited November 20, 2012 by detjo

Looks like the real player editor only lets you trim the length of a video.
