How to attributue student print cost to a department

Line manager is looking for way to bill students teachers for the student print job ie if a student prints maths work the maths department should be billed.

 

we are looking to use papercut at the moment any suggestion will be welcome.

Using PaperCut you can take advantage of Shared Accounts - that should do what you want Tour - Shared Accounts - PaperCut

Other than that you could have specific print queues for each department?

This sounds like an attempt for a technical solution to an underlying non-technical problem. What problem is your boss trying to solve?

We use the PaperCut with shared accounts and

don’t give anyone credit on their personal accounts.

We use the shared accounts as department accounts, similar to how most schools do on their photocopiers. Each department has a pin code and they enter that code in the popup window to release there prints.

Also for students/pupils printing each department has a second student pin code. The only difference being that the student codes change twice a day. (Done with a simple script and scheduled task) This is to stop students memorizing pin codes and printing to the incorrect department.

All department pin codes are published on intranet/VLE for staff access only, Staff then only give out the code to classes when they want students/pupils to print.

At the end of each month the total of Staff and Student shared accounts are charged back to the departments covering toner and paper. (Departments are allocated in budgets enough funds to cover their printing charges.)

PaperCut here too. It's alright as long as people charge to right departments.

We use PaperCut and have staff allocate print jobs to their department. Opted not to roll it out to students as we suspected they wouldn't correctly allocate the print job, especially if they needed to scroll down the list in order to find the relevant subject (i.e. Art would apparently print loads, and Zoology almost nothing).

 

We monitor student usage and speak to "offenders", e.g. non-school-related print jobs, excessive re-prints, etc.
