sonofsanta Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 This will make some of our elder statesmen very happy, I should imagine. Elite: Dangerous by Frontier Developments — Kickstarter A fully updated version of Elite by David Braben himself. We'll just have to pretend Frontier didn't happen in order to maintain our excitement (as taken from BBC News - Elite classic video games remake seeking backers) 3
pcstru Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 By a slight co-incidence that Wing Commander is also hoping to make a comeback.
Dos_Box Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 It promises to be rather interesting with mmorpg elements and up-to-date graphics. Perhaps he has been impressed by the popularity of Oolite, a free, community created version of the classic game that has tones of add-ons such as ships, missions, skins and other modding options: Oolite which, despite plenty of work, is still single player only (still great fun though). I think I may well send £20 their way. 1
LosOjos Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I knew it. As I left the house this morning, my bank card was sat next to the PC. "Nah", I thought, "I won't need it". Needless to say, the first thing I'm doing when I get home tonight is making a £20 pledge!
Dos_Box Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 (edited) Here is the Kickstarter page: Elite: Dangerous by Frontier Developments — Kickstarter Nice to see what you get for your £20 as well Shame I don't have £5000 to blow on a star system! 2 People did though Edited November 6, 2012 by Dos_Box
sonofsanta Posted November 6, 2012 Author Posted November 6, 2012 I think I'd rather he focused on the SP tbh; Eve has the MMO of Elite pretty well sorted now, and it's taken them a lot of years and a lot of people. If he focused on a better SP experience (where I think the only competition is X3) it'd be a lot more straightforward and a lot better, trying to do SP and MP is just going to dilute both :/

If he focused on a better SP experience (where I think the only competition is X3) it'd be a lot more straightforward and a lot better, trying to do SP and MP is just going to dilute both :/ In my experience, Eve doesn't have the MMO of Elite sorted! Eve is very much point and click....Elite gave you the feeling of flying your cobra between stations....running from the Fer-De-Lance!! It will be an interesting concept.....Have been waiting for this since the mid-80's....and since Freelancer was completed!!
Geoff Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I don't think Eve is comparable. One of the most fun things about Elite was flying the ship yourself in real time. Something Eve doesn't let you do.
sonofsanta Posted November 6, 2012 Author Posted November 6, 2012 I'd say the defining feature of Elite, and what its reputation is really built on, was the simulation of the galactic economy; whilst I don't doubt Braben could design that superbly, I think the back-end technology needed is insane and a massive task to take on. You could simplify it with sharding but what works really well in Eve is the shared universe. Maybe later, but for now, I'd rather a proper single player get done as well as can be, as otherwise I fear the boring background details of supporting MP will suck up an unduly large amount of money and take away from the game itself.
Andrew_C Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Do you still have to manually dock with the space station on your first flight?
aerospacemango Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Do you still have to manually dock with the space station on your first flight? Yep....but that just means you HAVE to get it right! Us old boys will probably be straight back into it*....The youngsters will be banging their heads, as they won't have had the experience!!! *Provided you can remember that far back!!
Geoff Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Protip: Use an analog joystick that doesn't auto centre. You'll lose a lot less paintwork docking at Lave that way. 1
aerospacemango Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Not quite a Protip: Leave space station....accelerate away....then stop. Turn around and face docking port.....accelerate towards station and press hyperspace.... Come out of hyperspace in dock of new station. Bounce around the galaxy until you have enough for docking computer! That was a way that my 16 year old self found!!!
Dos_Box Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 But shooting pirates gets you tons of money And is more fun, especially once you get a fuel scoop
sted Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 played frontier quite a bit rather than the origional and enjoyed that esp when i found a glitch to get a huge cargo hold so had a viper defence craft with huge laser massive engines and more cargo space than the big ships lol and was very fast
Earthling Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Talking of fuel scoops...................... After Elite and Frontier, I had to get First Encounters (which I still have and manage to get running occasionally). After the first month or so, I'd bought a fuel/cargo scoop and was pirating my way round etc., I noticed that the fuel/cargo scoop was really difficult to scoop cargo up with. I thought 'Bug' and phoned the Help Line. Chatting with the Tech guy, he said, 'You have to get really close to the cargo before it'll work, are you getting close enough.' My reply, 'I'm getting close enough to read the writing on the cargo pod'. There was a pause and then he said, 'What writing................?' Thanks, Tech Guy........How about playing the game you're supposed to be supporting. It wasn't a bug though, I finally got the hang of it. So I'm gonna go home, think about it some more and then maybe have £40 worth........if it ever gets made, then at least my name will go down in some kind of posterity. I really hope it does get produced, the gaming world is crying out for it.

LosOjos Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 We could all team up with our kickstarters and have an Edugeek star system:cool: I second that notion... although, with a £20 pledge each, it'd need 250 of us! Can't see it happening...
Earthling Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 We could all team up with our kickstarters and have an Edugeek star system:cool: I'm up for £40 worth of that. Can we raise £5grand between us?
bushby Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 ok im looking at it and think i will part some more money on this seconded kickstarter this month (mira) as being a youngun only a toddler when the company formed i will have to play the originals or youtube them
tmcd35 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 I don't know whether I'm excited by this or not? I remember playing Elite on the CPC and getting annoyed with the uncontrollable space craft. I've tried it several times since then and to be honest Eve gave me the game I was looking for in Elite, I just begrudge paying the subscription. If we got an Eve like single player game with an epically huge universe to roam around in then I'd be sold. A multiplayer mode without the subscription, hell yeah! PS3 port? I'd hand over cash today.
sonofsanta Posted November 6, 2012 Author Posted November 6, 2012 I'm up for £40 worth of that. Can we raise £5grand between us? You'd only need £3k now for a frontier system. The £5k tier is all sold out!
LosOjos Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 You'd only need £3k now for a frontier system. The £5k tier is all sold out! At the rate the £20 tier is selling, I won't be able to get my pledge in for that tonight!
OverWorked Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Do you still have to manually dock with the space station on your first flight? I would have loved Elite, but I could never dock, so never got far.
