I don't know if it's already been posted on here but Windows 8 will be available for download for the sum of just £24.99:

 

Microsoft Store United Kingdom Online Store

 

I believe that this is the upgrade version and requires an existing Windows installation (7/Vista/XP).

 

Don't forget to link from Quidco, currently at 15% - so it could be a great deal!

 

Also, note that if you bought/are buying a Windows 7 PC (not starter edition) between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013 you can potentially get the upgrade for £14.99:

Don't laugh at me, but after initially hating Windows 8, I now quite enjoy using it. I have it on my work laptop now and it's smooth. I've also installed it on a four year old desktop and it flies. Tbh I'm impressed.

Windows 7 used to fly, same with Windows XP. Once there are 6 months worth of updates on it then it'll be back to normal speed:p

$88 here, stupid ripoff Microsoft can take a long walk off a high place without a parachute. It's probably 25 cents in the US just to be 'fair'. I am so sick of IT companies, I would like to know why SSDs are $100 to ship from the US to NZ too.

You're right in that respect with Windows 7 - with my main Win PC at home over the course of a year it has slowed down something terrible. I did a clean install last month and it has made it perky again.

I'm gonna download this to install the upgrade version onto my laptop [Dell M101Z] when it's available. I'll probably ultimately install it on my desktop but wanted to make sure all my peripherals and software worked OK first. Does anyone know if you're buying the upgrade lics @£25 per copy do you need to buy them all at once or can you order one upgrade then another later?

 

On the site it seems to mention a limit of 5 copies per order? I'm thinking I should maybe buy 2 just to be on the safe side?

 

Anyone else planning on upgrading their home computers tomorrow?

I've downloaded the Windows 8 Pro ISO via the Windows Upgrade Assistant, but might wait until the weekend to install. :)

I've been trying it out on my laptop for the last hour and I'm finding the learning curve pretty steep after Windows7. I'm not sure how the public at large are going to take to Windows8 as it really is a quantum leap from any version update in the last 20 years.

 

Microsoft should really have included something in the setup that actually tells you how to use the UI rather than simply saying move the cursor to the corners of the screen as a lot of things that are natural on a touch screen are very fiddly to carry out with a touchpad. Specifically I ended up having to Google how to bring up the 'options' menu that swiping up/down from the top of the touch screen would bring up.

 

It's StartKey+Z by the way which is something you'll need to use in pretty much every metro app if you don't have a touchscreen (unless there's another cunning way of getting it to appear.)

Edit: There is another way, right-mouse button...!

 

Having said all that I'm starting to get the hang of it now and I like way it now links to your Microsoft online account and makes all your email, SkyDrive files, calendar all automatically available. The increased performance on my laptop is definitely noticeable too.

Try it with an Xbox - if you have one - and smartglass, its cool, especially if you have a WP7 and the browser installed, remote touchpad for the big screen with youtube and flash support for all the MS whitelisted sites.

The cheapest I have seen it for is £109.30 (P/N: FQC-05955).

 

That's the sort of price I've seen :(.

 

May have to see if I have an old machine I can sacrifice the licence from, or see if it will let me pay the upgrade price to go from one of the previews (fat chance!). Otherwise I may have to use WHS2011 (£40) for the machine I've been previewing W8 on.
