CyberNerd Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 As I said the Surface RT is not suitable for education but neither is the iPad (IMO) Surface Pro......yep thats the ticket! Al device for a fraction of the price with a Citrix connection seems to be winning strategy then...
jamesfed Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 Al device for a fraction of the price with a Citrix connection seems to be winning strategy then... In theory yes - I think the HP/Dell guys will be the ones we will end up seeing in schools though. With Intel Atom instead of i5 CPUs (like Surface Pro) they will be a lot more affordable.
localzuk Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 Gotta say, if the RT was domain manageable, I'd be chomping at the bit to replace our ipads with them. Desktop apps do not work well on touchscreens - the controls are all wrong for your fingers to use accurately.
Arthur Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 I think there'll be some impressive x86 chips about for tablets in the next couple of years. There will be 8-core Atom's next year. These will finally be able to execute instructions out-of-order (like regular x86 processors can) so there should be a noticeable improvement in performance compared to previous Atom's. Avoton's eight-core processors will feature clock speeds of between 1.6GHz and 2.4GHz, while including OOE (out-of-order execution) as well as Turbo Boost. Current Centerton-based Atom processors should be left behind performance wise by these new Edisonville platform-based Atom processors. Turbo Boost will see the clock speeds reach around 2.7GHz which is quite good considering these new SoC will only come with a TDP of 6 to 8.5W. The Avoton SoC will have a TDP of somewhere between 6 and 20W. Avoton will improve upon Centerton's formula by throwing more features on-die, which will include gigabit ethernet, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. jamesfed Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Good old Intel lagging behind AMD.....E-350 already has out of order ex
Arthur Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 I can't believe no one has posted the ad yet, it looks like they actually hired advertisers who wanted to sell the product this time which is quite a change Here's another good advert that shows Surface in use. It actually looks pretty cool. http://youtu.be/yswUFCD1x0A?hd=1
Arthur Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Good old Intel lagging behind AMD.....E-350 already has out of order ex It will be interesting to see how these new Atom's compare to AMD's APUs (especially the new Z-60 designed for tablets). Atom's so far have been very lackluster in terms of performance.
jc1875 Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Surface (preordered) like many have said, is a direct ipad competitor and priced less expensively. Combined with o365e then it's pretty much got everything tied up. I've been running win8 enterprise on a samsung series7 tablet for a while. Its good. Then I installed DirectAccess 2012. All I can say is 'wow'. ticks all the boxes that your SMT/middle management have been moaning about, and ipads cant deliver. (watch the goal posts move when they find out their ipad toys arent the answer) Win8 on the SS7 really came to life. Its a bit like lync - you think it's just another gadget/gizmo but once you have it, you really cant live without it and it makes everything else feel outdated. I actually feel physically disconnected now when i use my desktop PC at home and cant access work (although I have remote desktop, VPN etc). Connect using the directaccess enabled device and it's like the world is complete again. 1

Every time I give it a go it mucks up DNS Know what you mean about Lync though - just can't do without it now (full VOIP + IM here) and can see direct access being the same as a replacement to our current VPN.
Max_Power Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Where have you pre ordered the surface from? Every time I check MS website it says out of stock?
jamesfed Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 Where have you pre ordered the surface from? Every time I check MS website it says out of stock? Microsoft is the only place you can get it from - they are out of stock in the UK at the moment but if you pre order one it should be with you in 2 weeks or so (last I checked).

Nope just Microsoft they are keeping a tight reign on them but you will be able to get the Asus/Samsung ones from other places (inc the high street).

SYNACK Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Just read the Ars review and must say, it looks impressive. Like the kickstand and the way they did they keyboard/cover. With Ice Cream Sandwich it'd give the iPad a run... Well, with their App store selection, a lot of the things that make it good are the things that make it different.
Alis_Klar Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Local GPO can be enabled on RT devices and according to the app development guide it can also access network shares. I really hope this is the case!! This has been a bug bear of most mobile OS's up untill now. The kluddgy DropBox solution just has too many problems for schools.
Alis_Klar Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 (edited) Education just isn't a big part of Microsoft's strategy here. We seem to have fallen through the cracks. We need domain managed cheap tablets and can't afford a surface pro. Hopefully the cost of surface pro's (x86) will come down. Domain membership needn't affect performance on ARM processor. I know why MS made the decision just really frustrates what school would love to do. http://www.infoworld.com/d/microsoft-windows/microsoft-surface-and-group-policy-dont-mix-now-what-205435 Any reviews of the Pro x86 battery performance? SYNACK Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Any reviews of the Pro x86 battery performance? Acer Iconia 510p 9hrs or 18h with keyboard apparently.
localzuk Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 (edited) Acer Iconia 510p 9hrs or 18h with keyboard apparently. Can't find that device anywhere as an x86 device - it comes up as an android tablet? They only have it listed on their site as an A510 too - an android device. The Windows tablets seem to be W5 and W7 devices? Edited October 24, 2012 by localzuk
Arthur Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 (edited) Can't find that device anywhere as an x86 device @SYNACK got the name wrong. It's called the Acer Iconia W510. the W510 will start at $500 for the tablet only, though you'll also be able to purchase it with the detachable keyboard dock for $750. (And if the dock really does double the battery life to 18 hours, you might want to). Though the W510 won't be available for a few weeks yet -- it goes on sale November 9th the W510 does a disservice to Acer: with a chintzy build and a cramped, netbook-like keyboard, it confirms whatever pre-conceived notions shoppers may have about the brand. And with so many Windows 8 hybrids on the way, including one from Microsoft itself, Acer can't afford to have its products get lost in the mix. Edited October 24, 2012 by Arthur 1
Arthur Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 The screenshot below shows the directory size for both C:\Windows and C:\Program Files, the latter is where the Office15 install files are included (and yes winword.exe is still the Word executable). You're looking at roughly 6.47GB for Windows RT and then another 830MB for Office for a grand total of around 7.3GB. http://i.imgur.com/GaCaq.png
SYNACK Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 @SYNACK got the name wrong. It's called the Acer Iconia W510. My bad, I was going from my shoddy memory. We have a couple of Iconia w501 units that use the older CPU and has about half the battery life, a bit more weight but they still work fine with W8. They have been our test units for it.
localzuk Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 @SYNACK got the name wrong. It's called the Acer Iconia W510. Oh wow that's an ugly device.
