Be that as it may surely it's the out of the box experience that counts. How safe is the product presented to each customer at time of purchase.

It depends what you install 'out of the box'. Linux had many different ways of installing and as such it should be compared like for like - else it is simply saying 'look, we don't give you as many pieces of software but we do compare security with products that do, and we're better!' Which is just silly.

That's a reasonable arguement, if you're talking about server systems.
