Help....Components need Newcastle upon Tyne

Hi all,

 

We have a restaurant on our campus which is controlled by electronic registers; it is then fed to a computer (like most things) and then to a company in Scotland which handle all the back ups etc (Not our local authority for some stupid reason, unlike the rest of the school).

 

They are mid way through lunch time and the computer has died, it would appear someone has ripped the CPU fan out of the socket and naturally the computer just shuts down after a period of time to save it's self.

 

Does any one have a CPU fan for the following model as our entire standard ones which we have don’t fit etc?

Pent 4

 

Any help would be apprechiated.

Sorry, no spares for that model. How about setting a vacuum cleaner or a hairdyer to blow air at the cpu as an emergency measure?

The motherboard detects when the CPU fan is plugged in and spinning, so that wouldn't work unfortunately.

 

Where abouts on tyneside are you?

And I've used both methods recently. Cylinder vacuum = sucks one end and blows out tother. I don't know about your hairdryer but mine has a cold air setting. Shove a peice of plastic pipe over the nozzle and direct to the site of the problem.

I don't actually own a hairdryer and the school is too tight to buy one!.

 

I will see if i can get some pics of the chassis for plexer, i have just realised i dont have a camera phone, that cannot be right.

Well you could run the machine with the HEATSINK, but no fan, leave the case side off and use a desktop fan..

 

weve been known to do it when one of our server fans have went..

 

(usual call service support and wait 2 days for them to bring a new one)

 

To be fair all the fans are near enough the same... a P4 uses a ZIF socket, so it should be sat on the motherboard with a chunk of metal on top.

 

Get a fan out of another machine, and it just screws into the heatsink...

 

Otherwise buy one from dabs.com or something, they are muchly cheap .

Are they the heatsinks with the small fans on the front, rather that the top? I've got some borked chasis and MB's here with good CPU Heat Sinks and Fans on them. Can you get a piccy for me so I can double check?

i always thought they were ZIF??

In fact if it is like the ones I have I did have a brand new one in a box somewhere.

To be fair, almost any fan should fit the controller, assuming its the 3-pin sort that counts the RPM (so the PC knows it is there and working) - get down maplins, pick up 2 or 3 and chose the one that fits best - it doesnt have to attach brilliantly - 1 screw should hold it temporarily

Thanks for all the help people, we did approach the powers that be with the solutions however they had decided just to take the kid's names and list what they had purchased and deduct it from their cards when the system is back up and running.

 

I have strongly reccomended a replacement machine given the critical importance of the system and that they use a company that isn't in Scotland, backups their electronic cash registers over a 56k modem and takes a week to respond to a high priority call!

 

In the four years in which i have worked there it was the first time i had met that machine or even new it existed!

 

This one has to go in the record books!
