DrummerBoy Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 This is an interesting one, and I want to pick people's brains who have done this. My daughter has just taken on a stable yard, and I've installed networkable DVR's. There are 2 DVRs in disparate buildings. One in the main house, and one in a stable block approx 100m away, around a walled corner. Between the house and the stable block is concrete, right up to the wall, so running cable is tricky/expensive (esp for protective trunking). She has a normal home wifi network, and I want to join the 2 buildings together. I need suggestions for good kit, for an outdoor bridge system. Thanks in advance, for any help.
MicrosoftTechy Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Are they on the same Power circuit ? you could use powerline adapters?
MicrosoftTechy Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 NETGEAR Powerline Nano500 Set XAVB5101 Bridge - EN, Fast EN, Gigabit EN, HomePlug AV (HPAV)
Oaktech Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 how much money do you have to spend? For a fairly low budget, I would suggest a ubiquiti long range system... Ubiquiti 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz Wireless Bridge Kits for a better budget, I woud suggest Ligowave LigoWave LigoPTP 5-23 MIMO PTP PRO Wireless Bridge 210Mbps for absolutely no budget I would suggest a pair of any old wireless access points capable of bridging - for example netgear WG602 - from ebay, and a pair of stella doradus parabolic antennas Parabolic antenna / MMDS Antennas / Grid / Solid / IEEE 802.11b / 802.11g / Wireless LAN (WLAN) / Bluetooth / Wimax All will do the job, but the more you pay the better and more controllable it gets.
DrummerBoy Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 Some good ideas here. I thought of the powerline one, but the house and the stables are on separate feeds. As you've probably guess there is zero budget!! So I might try the WG602s first, and see how we go, although weather proofing might prove interesting!
Oaktech Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I 've just put my wg602s on the window sills and run the antenna pigtials through the window frames... weatherproofing done!
januttall Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 get a WI-FI extender with a LAN port. as they will extend the WLAN to the LAN, like a reverse AP. if your struggling for signal you could try a cupple of directional aerials and some are really easy to make. EG the and after very extensive testing without using a parabolic dish this will create the best directional antenna. if you really wanted to try something and had a few old machines you could set up an ax25 network over a walkie talkie , bit slow tho.

januttall Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 (edited) and i prefer these they seem cheaper and faster as they are N rated. and work great had two at home for the last 3 years never had any trouble with them Edited September 11, 2012 by januttall
DrummerBoy Posted September 18, 2012 Author Posted September 18, 2012 Latest thoughts!! Having done a bit of digging, and looking at locations for power, as well as where external aerials might be mounted, I have come up with a cunning (to me at least:-)) plan: At the house end: PoE switch attached to ADSL router; ethernet into attic, and a PoE Wireless access point inthe attic, with a Yagi directional antenna moutned on the gable end, pointed at the stable block. Stable Block end (bearing in mind nearest power is 4 stables away!) same setup, PoE switch, DVR into switch, PoE Wireless access point and Yagi antenna pointed back at house. I think this will work well, and avoids having to run more mains power where there currently isn't any!! Please feel free to pick holes in this!
twin--turbo Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Just put two Ubiquiti Nanostation M5's anywhere in the vacinity and you will get a decent connection. OR use deliberant DLB 5M-18's Used lots of these for point to point. Rob
jinnantonnixx Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 In my old job I set up microwave bridges between sites. It was moderately successful. The microwave power was strictly governed, so to get further distance you had to have more sensitive 'ears' i.e. larger dishes. Microwave kit was expensive, so I'm guessing it's out of budget. How about a cantenna? I haven't tried this, or know anybody who has but..... what have you got to lose? Cantenna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Willott Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Just make sure you don't fall foul of Ofcom, if using 5GHz range, it's only unlicensed for "mobile" devices - I've been looking at wifi links for my church/vicarage/church hall to try to work best solution for linking the three.
DrummerBoy Posted September 18, 2012 Author Posted September 18, 2012 Bits ordered, went for a PoE injector at the house end, saved a bit of money, and already had a PoE switch for the stable end. Total cost of bits £112. I'll report back with how it goes!!
DrummerBoy Posted November 16, 2012 Author Posted November 16, 2012 (edited) OK, job jobbed! After a bit of cable running, and jiggery pokery I have a working system!! One edimax access point in the roof space of the stable, with one of the antennas connected to an external Yagi: Pointed back at the house (you can just see the white guttering on the bungalow, behind he neighbors wall!!): PoE switch connected to the DVR CCTV recorder, 50m cable run to the Edimax (PoE powered). At the house end there is a PoE injector, and the same Edimax access point in the roof space, connected to the same Yagi antenna. After a bit of a learning curve on the setup of the Edimax's it all works!! I think it's pretty close to the limit of the system, but we have real time video camera feed from the stable block! Not bad for my first attempt at a remote wifi system! Edited November 16, 2012 by Drummer_Boy
Oaktech Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Thanks for sharing! Like it a lot Where did the Yagi come from if you don't mind me asking? I am going to need to do one like this soon and the parabolics i usually use aren't going to work as they are too wide.
twin--turbo Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Seems overkill? A pair of Ubiquiti Nano stations would surely do the job Rob

Off eBay, in fact all the bits came off eBay!! this one I think: 2.4GHz 25dbi Yagi Wireless WiFi Antenna RP-SMA Female | eBay
DrummerBoy Posted November 16, 2012 Author Posted November 16, 2012 Seems overkill? A pair of Ubiquiti Nano stations would surely do the job Rob I wasn't so sure. You'd still need the PoE devices and cabling, and the range is dependent on the antenna, according to their website. Also the whole shooting match would have cost twice as much, for virtually the same work. I'm nothing if not tight! :-)
twin--turbo Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Used Nano's on 1mile links with no issue at all. And similar deliberant 5M-18's with no line of site at .25Mile and full 100Mb bandwidth ( well they say 300Mb but the lan ports are only 100Mb!!! makes the wifi throughput a joke! ) Rob
